Ohio license plate sticker laws require every registered vehicle to display a current validation sticker on the lower right corner of the rear license plate, and driving without one is a minor misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $150.1Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Revised Code 4503.21 – Display of License Plates and Validation Stickers or Temporary License Registration2Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Revised Code 2929.28 – Financial Sanctions, Misdemeanor Faking or stealing a sticker is treated far more harshly, with jail exposure on a first offense and felony charges for stealing plates.
Where the Sticker Goes and What It Shows
The validation sticker belongs on the lower right-hand corner of your rear plate. That applies to passenger cars, trucks, and motorcycles. Ohio dropped the front plate requirement for standard passenger vehicles on July 1, 2020, so the rear plate is the only one that carries a sticker.
Each sticker shows the month and year your current registration period expires.3Legal Information Institute. Ohio Admin Code 4501-27-07 – Specifications for Validation Stickers Colors change year to year so officers can spot an expired tag from a distance, and each sticker carries a unique serial number tied to your registration record. When you renew, you place the new sticker directly over the old one.
Your plate must be mounted securely and can’t be obscured.1Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Revised Code 4503.21 – Display of License Plates and Validation Stickers or Temporary License Registration Tinted covers, decorative frames that overlap the sticker, or anything else that makes the registration hard to read can draw the same treatment as a missing sticker, even if your registration is current.
Renewing on Time
Registration cycles typically follow the owner’s birth month, unless the vehicle is registered under a business or fleet account. You can renew three ways:
- Online through the BMV’s OPLATES portal, with the sticker mailed to you.4Ohio BMV. Ohio BMV Online Services
- In person at any deputy registrar office, walking out with the sticker.
- By mail, sending the renewal form and a check or money order payable to the Ohio Treasurer of State.
The base annual registration fee for a passenger car is $36, plus an $8 deputy registrar service fee if you renew in person and any local permissive taxes, which vary by county in $5 increments up to $30.5Ohio BMV. Documents and Fees Proof of insurance is required, and any outstanding fines or compliance issues have to be cleared first.
If your vehicle is registered in Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, or Summit County, you may also need to pass an E-Check emissions test before the BMV will issue your sticker.6Ohio EPA. E-Check The program covers gasoline and diesel vehicles roughly six through twenty-six model years old, on a rotating schedule by even and odd model years. Vehicles outside those seven counties are exempt.
There is no grace period. The day your registration lapses, you can be cited. Renewing more than 30 days after the expiration date adds a $10 late fee, which is far cheaper than the fine for driving on expired tags.
Penalties for Expired or Missing Stickers
Driving without a current, properly displayed sticker is a minor misdemeanor under Ohio Revised Code 4503.21.1Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Revised Code 4503.21 – Display of License Plates and Validation Stickers or Temporary License Registration The maximum fine is $150, plus court costs.2Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Revised Code 2929.28 – Financial Sanctions, Misdemeanor A minor misdemeanor carries no jail time, but it goes on your record, and repeat citations can invite closer scrutiny.
An officer may issue a compliance order requiring you to show proof of valid registration within a set period. Some courts will reduce or dismiss the fine once you produce proof of a current registration, but that outcome depends on the judge and the circumstances, so it’s not something to rely on.
Penalties for Counterfeit or Stolen Stickers
Using a fake, altered, or stolen sticker is a wholly different offense. Operating a vehicle with a fictitious or counterfeit license plate or identification mark is a fourth-degree misdemeanor on a first offense and a third-degree misdemeanor on any subsequent offense.7Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Revised Code 4549.08 – Fictitious License Plates or Identification Number or Mark A fourth-degree misdemeanor carries up to 30 days in jail; a third-degree misdemeanor carries up to 60 days. Both add fines on top.
Stealing someone else’s license plate is treated as a fifth-degree felony under Ohio’s theft statutes, regardless of the plate’s monetary value.8Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Revised Code 2913.71 – Felony of Fifth Degree Regardless of the Value of the Property The statute specifically names license plates and temporary registrations. A felony conviction brings potential prison time and a permanent record affecting employment, housing, and more.
Replacing a Lost, Stolen, or Damaged Sticker
If your sticker falls off, is stolen, or becomes unreadable, you need a replacement before driving again. Ohio law doesn’t distinguish between reasons. No valid sticker means you can be cited.
Complete BMV Form 4809, the Duplicate Registration Card, Transfer, Replacement Plates / Validation Sticker Application.9Ohio.gov. Duplicate Registration Card, Transfer, Replacement Plates / Validation Sticker Application The form asks for your plate number, vehicle information from your title, and whether the sticker was lost, stolen, or damaged. Submit it in person at a deputy registrar office or by mail to the BMV.
The replacement fee for a passenger vehicle is $9.5Ohio BMV. Documents and Fees Mail-in requests take a check or money order payable to the Ohio Treasurer of State. Place the new sticker on the rear plate as soon as you receive it. If the original sticker turns up later, it’s no longer valid.
A police report isn’t required for a replacement, but if your sticker was stolen it’s worth filing one. The report creates an official record in case the sticker is used on another vehicle, which could otherwise come back to you. Keep a copy.
Moving to Ohio
New residents have 30 days after establishing residency to transfer an out-of-state registration.10Ohio BMV. New Ohio Residents Taking a job, signing a lease, buying a home, or enrolling children in school all trigger residency. Home-state plates and stickers remain valid during that window under interstate reciprocity. After 30 days, you need Ohio plates with a current Ohio sticker, and if the vehicle is registered in one of the seven E-Check counties, it has to pass emissions first.
