The main Ohio Medicaid phone number is 800-324-8680, the Ohio Medicaid Consumer Hotline. Representatives answer Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Time. Callers who are deaf or hard of hearing can use the TTY relay at 711.1Ohio Medicaid Managed Care. Next Generation Medicaid FAQ That one number handles most member and applicant questions, but it is not the only line you may need. Providers, appeals, fraud reports, and your managed care plan each have their own numbers.
What the Consumer Hotline Handles
Call 800-324-8680 to check the status of a pending application, ask general eligibility questions, update your address or other contact information, or select or change a managed care plan.2Ohio Medicaid Managed Care. Ohio’s administrative rules require the agency to provide language services at no cost for callers with limited English proficiency, and auxiliary aids for callers with disabilities.3Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Administrative Code 5160:1-2-01 – Medicaid: Administrative Agency Responsibilities When you dial in, listen for the language prompt first, then pick the menu option closest to your question. Monday mornings and the days around a renewal deadline are the worst for hold times. Later in the week and the Saturday window are faster.
Healthcare providers should not use the Consumer Hotline. The Provider Hotline is 800-686-1516.
When to Call Your County Office Instead
Ohio Medicaid is administered locally through each county’s Department of Job and Family Services. All 88 counties operate their own office, and your county office processes your application paperwork, handles verification documents, and manages your individual case file.4Ohio Medicaid Consumer Hotline. The Consumer Hotline is good for general questions and status checks. When you need to hand-deliver documents, clear a verification hold, or talk through something specific to your file, the county office is the right call. The phone number and address for your office are listed in the state directory at jfs.ohio.gov/about/local-agencies-directory.
When to Call Your Managed Care Plan
Most Ohio Medicaid members are enrolled in a managed care plan run by a private insurer. Your plan handles the provider network, prior authorizations, prescription coverage, and day-to-day care coordination. Each plan has its own member services line, and that number is printed on the back of your plan’s member ID card.
If your question is about finding an in-network doctor, getting a procedure approved, or understanding a specific benefit, your plan’s number will get you an answer faster than the state hotline. If you have just enrolled and have not yet received a plan ID card, or you want to compare plans before picking one, go back to the Consumer Hotline at 800-324-8680.2Ohio Medicaid Managed Care. Appeals: The Bureau of State Hearings
If you receive a Notice of Action that denies, reduces, or terminates your benefits, you have the right to request a state hearing. Call the Bureau of State Hearings toll-free at 1-866-635-3748. You can also submit a request by fax to (614) 728-9574, by mail to the Bureau of State Hearings at P.O. Box 182825, Columbus, Ohio 43218-2825, or through your local county DJFS office.
Only you, the member, can request a hearing by phone. A mailed request can be submitted by someone on your behalf. You generally have 90 days from the date you receive the adverse notice to request a hearing. If you request it before the effective date of the change, your benefits may continue at the current level while the appeal is pending. Missing the 90-day deadline forfeits your right to challenge that particular decision, so treat the notice as time-sensitive the moment it arrives.
Reporting Medicaid Fraud
If you suspect someone is misusing Medicaid benefits or a provider is billing for services never provided, Ohio offers three reporting lines, and you can report anonymously through any of them:
- Ohio Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit: 1-800-282-0515 (investigates provider fraud and patient abuse in Medicaid-funded facilities)
- Ohio Department of Medicaid: 1-614-466-0722
- Ohio Auditor of State: 1-866-372-8364 or fraudohio@ohioauditor.gov (broader public-fund misuse)
What to Have Ready Before You Call
The representative has to verify your identity before discussing anything on your case, so a little prep saves time on hold. Have these within reach:
- Your Social Security number and date of birth, so the system can pull up your record.
- Your Medicaid case number or Billing ID, the 12-digit number on your Ohio Medicaid identification card.4Ohio Medicaid Consumer Hotline. Contact Us
- Recent pay stubs or a tax return with specific dollar amounts, if you are reporting an income change. Vague estimates slow things down.
- The exact date of any change to your address, job, household size, or health status. Eligibility adjustments are tied to specific dates, and getting them wrong can create coverage gaps.
Write down the representative’s name, the date, and any confirmation or reference number you are given. If the representative tells you a change has been made, that handwritten note is your proof while you wait for the written notice to arrive.
