The sales tax rate in Okaloosa County, Florida is 7%: the state’s 6% sales tax plus a 1% local discretionary surtax. The same 7% applies countywide, whether you’re buying in Destin, Fort Walton Beach, Crestview, or Niceville. One important wrinkle keeps the bill down on big-ticket items: the 1% county portion only applies to the first $5,000 of any single item.
What Makes Up the 1% Local Surtax
Florida’s base 6% comes from Chapter 212 of the state statutes. 1Florida Statutes. Florida Code 212.05 – Sales, Storage, Use Tax The county’s 1% is actually two separate half-cent surtaxes, each approved by voters for a set period:
- A 0.5% local government infrastructure surtax, in effect through December 31, 2028, funding county road and bridge work.
- A 0.5% school capital outlay surtax, approved by voters on November 3, 2020, and in effect through December 31, 2030, funding school construction and capital needs.
Both are confirmed active for 2026. 2Florida Department of Revenue. Discretionary Sales Surtax Information for Calendar Year 2026
The $5,000 Cap on Large Purchases
The 1% county surtax only applies to the first $5,000 of any single item of tangible personal property. 3Florida Statutes. Florida Code 212.054 – Discretionary Sales Surtax; Limitations, Administration, and Collection Anything above $5,000 on that item is taxed at just 6%.
On a $20,000 boat, the surtax applies to the first $5,000 (that’s $50 in surtax) and the remaining $15,000 is taxed at 6% only. Total tax: $1,250 instead of $1,400.
Watch the “single item” rule, though. Items normally sold together as a set, or assembled into a working unit, count as one item for the cap. A boat and trailer sold together on the same invoice are treated as a single item. 3Florida Statutes. Florida Code 212.054 – Discretionary Sales Surtax; Limitations, Administration, and Collection

Florida Code 212.04 – Admissions Tax; Rate, Procedure, Enforcement K-12 and community college events using only student or faculty talent, and events run by qualifying nonprofits, are exceptions.

Most large online retailers already collect Florida sales tax because remote sellers with more than $100,000 in annual Florida sales are required to. Smaller sellers may not, and when they don’t, the buyer owes the tax. Individuals can report and pay use tax on Form DR-15, the Florida Sales and Use Tax Return. 11Florida Department of Revenue.
