How to Renew

Through the Online Portal

The Board launched a new self-service licensing portal in November 2024. Every licensee needs to create a new account, even if you’ve renewed online in the past. First-time registration goes through the Applicant Portal, then you log into the Licensee Portal to renew and print your license.4Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering. By Mail

You can mail the renewal form attached to your current license, together with payment, to the Board’s office. If you’ve lost the renewal slip, send a note with your name, mailing address, file number if you have one, and date of birth, and add $5 to your fee.4Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering. Your updated license is mailed to the address on file, so confirm that address is current before you submit. Licenses must be posted in public view at your workstation with a current photo attached.4Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering. Continuing Education Starting in 2026

Beginning January 1, 2026, Oklahoma barbers must complete 12 hours of Board-approved continuing education within the 24 months before each renewal date. The Board will set specific required subjects by rule, and a set number of mandatory topics must be included within those 12 hours.5BillTrack50. OK SB532 The same requirement applies to anyone reactivating a lapsed license.

If you haven’t looked at approved CE providers yet, check with the Board for the current list and required topics. Scrambling for 12 hours in the final weeks before expiration is a mistake most people make only once.

If Your License Has Already Expired

Within Two Months of Expiration

You can still renew at the standard $80 rate with no late penalty. The two-month clock starts on the last day of your birth month.1Oklahoma Statutes. Oklahoma Statutes Title 59 – 199.10 Expiration and Renewal of Licenses

Two Months to Five Years

Past the two-month mark, a $10 late fee is added to the regular renewal fee.6Oklahoma Administrative Code. Oklahoma Administrative Code 175:10-11-2 – Cosmetology and Barber License and Penalty Fees You can renew this way at any point within five years of expiration.1Oklahoma Statutes. Oklahoma Statutes Title 59 – 199.10 Expiration and Renewal of Licenses The process otherwise mirrors a regular renewal.

More Than Five Years

After five years, paperwork alone won’t restore your license. You must enroll in a cosmetology or barber school, complete a specified number of review hours, and sit for a new examination.1Oklahoma Statutes. Oklahoma Statutes Title 59 – 199.10 Expiration and Renewal of Licenses The required hours increase with how long the license has been expired and depend on your license type. Contact the Board to confirm what applies.

Penalties for Practicing on an Expired License

Working on clients with an expired license is not a gray area. The Board can impose administrative fines up to $500, with each day of continued operation counted as a separate offense.7New York Codes, Rules and Regulations. Oklahoma Code Title 59 – 199.6 Rules, Implementation, Unlawful Acts Practicing without a valid license is also a misdemeanor carrying a fine between $50 and $150, up to 30 days in county jail, or both. Shop owners face the same $500 administrative fine for allowing unlicensed barbers to work on the premises.

Name and Address Changes

If your legal name has changed since your last renewal, submit supporting documentation such as a marriage certificate or court order with your renewal. You must notify the Board of any mailing address change within 30 days.1Oklahoma Statutes. Oklahoma Statutes Title 59 – 199.10 Expiration and Renewal of Licenses An outdated address means your renewed license goes to the wrong place, which becomes a real problem when an inspector asks to see a current document.

If you also own a shop, note that the establishment license renews separately from your individual license, at $90 biennially.3Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering.
