An Oklahoma CDL renewal can be started up to one year before the license expires, and most drivers can complete it online through Service Oklahoma for $56.50 (four-year) or $113.00 (eight-year) for a Class A or Class B credential. Hazmat endorsement holders, drivers with name changes, Commercial Learner Permit holders, and a few other groups must renew in person at a Service Oklahoma location or licensed operator.
When to Renew
Oklahoma issues commercial driver licenses in four-year and eight-year terms. You can begin renewing up to a year before your current CDL expires, and Service Oklahoma recommends starting at least 60 days ahead to avoid a lapse in your driving privileges.1Service Oklahoma. CDL Renewal Replacement Online
If your CDL has already expired, you can still renew without retesting as long as fewer than three years have passed. Once you cross the three-year mark, you have to apply as a first-time CDL applicant and go through the full written and skills testing process again.1Service Oklahoma. CDL Renewal Replacement Online
Who Can Renew Online and Who Has to Go In Person
Most CDL holders qualify for the online renewal portal. You are not eligible to renew online if any of the following apply:
- You hold a hazardous materials (H) endorsement, which requires a written knowledge test and TSA background check.
- Your current last name doesn’t match your identification documents and you need to submit a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or similar paperwork.
- You are exempt from carrying a Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
- You need to add or remove a restriction on your CDL.
- You hold a Commercial Learner Permit.
Drivers who do qualify online still need valid proof of identity and proof of residency on file. In-person renewals can be done at any Service Oklahoma location or licensed operator offering CDL services.1Service Oklahoma. CDL Renewal Replacement Online
Documents You’ll Need
You need to show proof of identity using one certified original or certified copy. Common acceptable documents include an unexpired U.S. passport, a certified birth certificate, a certificate of naturalization, or a valid permanent resident card. Notarized copies are not accepted.2Service Oklahoma. Required Documents
For in-person renewals, bring one proof of residency showing your name and Oklahoma address. If you want a REAL ID-compliant credential, bring two residency documents. Utility bills, bank statements, cell phone bills, and credit card statements must be dated within the last 60 days. Property tax bills, government correspondence from the past year, a current residential lease, and mortgage documents also qualify.2Service Oklahoma. Required Documents
Lawful permanent residents should bring a valid, unexpired permanent resident card issued by USCIS in addition to the other required documents.1Service Oklahoma. CDL Renewal Replacement Online

Medical Certificate Requirements
Every CDL holder must tell the state which type of commercial driving they do. That self-certification choice determines whether you have to keep a current Medical Examiner’s Certificate on file.4eCFR. 49 CFR 383.71 – Driver Application and Certification Procedures Drivers in non-excepted interstate commerce (crossing state lines without a specific federal exemption) must maintain a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate, commonly called a DOT medical card. The physical must be performed by a provider on the FMCSA’s National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners. Check the registry before scheduling, because a certificate from an unlisted examiner won’t be recognized.5eCFR. 49 CFR 391.43 – Medical Examination; Certificate of Physical Examination
Starting February 17, 2026, Service Oklahoma will no longer accept paper medical certificates. Your examiner must submit results electronically through the FMCSA National Registry, and that electronic record is what Service Oklahoma uses to confirm your medical status.6Service Oklahoma. Update a CDL FMCSA has issued a temporary waiver through April 10, 2026 allowing drivers to carry a paper copy as proof for up to 60 days after the exam, but the electronic submission is the permanent record states rely on.7FMCSA National Registry. NRII Learning Center
If your medical certificate expires or the electronic record doesn’t reach Service Oklahoma in time, your status flips to “not certified” and your CDL can be downgraded automatically, with no separate notice. That strips the commercial privileges from your license until you get a new physical and the results are posted to the FMCSA system.6Service Oklahoma. Update a CDL
Vision Screening
Every in-person renewal includes a vision test. For an intrastate commercial license, you need at least 20/40 visual acuity (with or without corrective lenses) and a horizontal field of vision of at least 70 degrees in each eye measured separately. Bioptic telescopic devices are not allowed for CDL holders.8Legal Information Institute. Oklahoma Admin Code 260:135-5-52 – Vision Standards and Problems Interstate drivers must also meet federal physical qualification standards, which share the 20/40 acuity threshold, require at least 70 degrees of field of vision in both eyes, and require the ability to distinguish traffic signal colors. If you’ve noticed changes in your eyesight, get an eye exam before your appointment so a failed screening doesn’t delay the renewal.
The Clearinghouse Check That Can Block Renewal
Since November 2024, every state must query the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse before renewing a CDL. If the clearinghouse shows an unresolved drug or alcohol violation, the state cannot renew your license or any hazmat endorsement until the violation is cleared through the return-to-duty process.9eCFR. 49 CFR 383.73 – State Procedures If you’ve had any employer-reported violation or positive test result, check your clearinghouse status before you walk into a renewal appointment.
Hazmat Endorsement Renewal
Hazmat endorsement holders face the most involved renewal. You must retake the hazardous materials written knowledge test at each renewal and complete a new TSA threat assessment, which includes fingerprinting and a criminal history review. The TSA assessment fee is $85.25, paid separately to the enrollment provider.1Service Oklahoma. CDL Renewal Replacement Online3Transportation Security Administration. HAZMAT Endorsement
Start the TSA enrollment well before your renewal appointment. The threat assessment takes time to process, and the renewal cannot be finalized until it clears. Online renewal is not an option for hazmat-endorsed drivers; the in-person visit and written test are required every cycle.1Service Oklahoma. CDL Renewal Replacement Online
Other Endorsements at Renewal
Endorsements for tankers (N), passenger transport (P), doubles/triples (T), and school bus (S) don’t require retesting at renewal as long as they’re already active on your license. Adding a new endorsement is different: for example, a school bus endorsement requires passing the written test, holding a Commercial Learner Permit for at least 14 full days, completing Entry-Level Driver Training through an FMCSA-registered provider, and passing a CDL drive test.10Service Oklahoma. Endorsements and Restrictions
Adding an endorsement also costs more: $25 to add a Class A endorsement and $15 each for Class B or C endorsement additions.1Service Oklahoma. CDL Renewal Replacement Online
Temporary Credential and Permanent Card
After paying and completing the renewal, you receive a temporary paper credential that lets you keep driving commercially while the permanent card is produced. Service Oklahoma says the permanent CDL arrives in the mail within 30 days.1Service Oklahoma. CDL Renewal Replacement Online Keep the temporary document with you whenever you drive, since it is your legal credential during the wait. Some federal facilities may not accept the paper temporary as a primary ID, so carry a backup if you access restricted locations.
Penalties for Driving on an Expired CDL
Operating a commercial vehicle without a valid license for that vehicle class is a misdemeanor in Oklahoma, punishable by a fine between $50 and $300, up to 30 days in jail, or both. If you’re cited for an expired CDL and produce a valid renewed license in court on or before your court date, the charge can be dismissed without fines or court costs.11Justia Law. Oklahoma Code Title 47 Section 47-6-303 – Driving Without License or While License Is Canceled, Denied, Suspended, or Revoked – Penalties
Driving while your CDL is suspended, revoked, or disqualified is a separate and more serious offense, carrying up to one year in jail and escalating fines: $100 to $500 for a first conviction, $200 to $750 for a second, and $300 to $1,000 for a third or subsequent offense.11Justia Law. Oklahoma Code Title 47 Section 47-6-303 – Driving Without License or While License Is Canceled, Denied, Suspended, or Revoked – Penalties
Convictions That Block Renewal
Certain convictions disqualify you from holding a CDL, which prevents renewal. Oklahoma imposes a minimum one-year disqualification for any of the following when committed while operating a commercial vehicle: driving with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.04 or higher, refusing a required alcohol test, driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident, or committing a felony using the commercial vehicle. If the same offense happens in a vehicle carrying hazardous materials that requires placarding, the disqualification is at least three years. A second conviction for any of those offenses triggers a lifetime disqualification.12Justia Law. Oklahoma Code Title 47 Section 47-6-205-2 – Disqualification From Driving Privileges for Certain Convictions or Acts
Military Skills Test Waivers
Active-duty military personnel, Reserves, National Guard, and Coast Guard members who have operated a commercial-class vehicle for the two years immediately before application can skip the skills exam. You need a clean record: no license suspensions or revocations in the past two years, no major disqualifying offenses, no more than one serious traffic violation, and no at-fault accidents.13Legal Information Institute. Oklahoma Admin Code 260:135-5-168 – Skills Examination
Current service members and veterans within one year of separation or retirement can waive both the skills and knowledge exams if they received formal military training for commercial vehicle operation and were regularly employed in that role during their last year of service. The same clean-record requirements apply, and you’ll need documentation from your military service showing the relevant experience.13Legal Information Institute.
