Oklahoma Driver License: Requirements, Tests, and Fees

An Oklahoma driver’s license is issued by Service Oklahoma. A standard Class D license costs $38.50 plus a $4.00 application fee, and you can start the process as young as 15½ through the state’s graduated licensing program. To get one, you’ll need to show proof of identity, lawful presence, a Social Security number, and Oklahoma residency, then pass a written knowledge test, a vision screening, and a road skills test.

Who Can Apply

You must be an Oklahoma resident with lawful presence in the United States. The state does not issue licenses to non-residents.1Oklahoma Statutes. Oklahoma Code 47-6-113 – Restricted Licenses

Age determines which track you follow. Applicants under 18 go through the Graduated Driver License program starting at 15½. At 18 or older, you can apply directly for a Class D license without the permit and intermediate stages, though you still take all three tests.

If you’re moving to Oklahoma from another state, you’re expected to transfer your existing license. Service Oklahoma does not publish a hard deadline in days, but you must hold a valid license in your state of residence.2Service Oklahoma. Out-of-State Transfers Once you have an Oklahoma license, any change of address, county, or name has to be reported within ten days.3Oklahoma Statutes. Oklahoma Code 47-6-116 – Notice of Change of Address or Name

A medical condition that affects safe driving doesn’t automatically disqualify you, but Service Oklahoma can require a medical evaluation or place restrictions on the license before issuing it.1Oklahoma Statutes. Oklahoma Code 47-6-113 – Restricted Licenses

Oklahoma moves teen drivers through two stages before a full license.

Learner’s Permit

At 15½, you can apply for a learner’s permit if you’re enrolled in or have completed an approved driver education course. At 16, that course is no longer a prerequisite — you can apply after passing the written exam alone. The permit lets you drive between 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. with a licensed driver at least 21 years old in the front passenger seat.4Oklahoma Statutes. Oklahoma Code 47-6-105v2 – Graduated Class D Licenses, Motorcycle-only Licenses, Farm Vehicle Special Permits

Intermediate License

After holding the permit at least six months, you can move up to an intermediate Class D license. A parent or legal guardian must submit a sworn statement confirming you’ve completed at least 50 hours of behind-the-wheel training, with 10 of those hours at night, under the supervision of a licensed driver 21 or older. You also need to finish a free teen driver work zone and first responder safety course approved by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.5Oklahoma Statutes. Oklahoma Code 47-6-105v1 – Graduated Class D Licenses

The intermediate license keeps nighttime and passenger restrictions in place until you turn 18 or otherwise meet the conditions for a full, unrestricted license.

What to Bring to Your Appointment

All documents must be originals or certified copies. Notarized photocopies are not accepted.6Service Oklahoma. Required Documents

You’ll need:

  • Proof of identity, such as a certified birth certificate, valid U.S. passport, or Oklahoma license expired no more than three years
  • Your Social Security number (the physical card is not required)
  • Proof of Oklahoma residency: one document if you’re only updating an address, two documents if you’re applying for a REAL ID for the first time. Utility bills, a lease, mortgage papers, and government correspondence all qualify
  • A name-change document if your legal name differs from what appears on your identity document

Non-citizens must present valid immigration documents in person, such as a Permanent Resident Card, Employment Authorization Document, or an unexpired foreign passport with a valid U.S. visa and I-94 form. These are verified through the federal SAVE program. If your authorized stay has an expiration date, your license will expire on the same date.7Oklahoma Statutes. The Three Tests

Testing happens at a Service Oklahoma facility or a participating tag agency.

Written Knowledge Test

The written exam covers traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving. It has 20 questions, and you need to answer at least 15 correctly.9Service Oklahoma. Oklahoma Written Knowledge Test Applicants who completed driver education may have the written portion waived for their learner’s permit.4Oklahoma Statutes. Oklahoma Code 47-6-105v2 – Graduated Class D Licenses, Motorcycle-only Licenses, Farm Vehicle Special Permits

Vision Screening

For a Class D license, you need at least 20/60 in both eyes or 20/50 in one eye, with or without corrective lenses. If your vision is worse than that but no worse than 20/100 in each eye, you may qualify for a restricted license limiting speed, driving area, or time of day.10Legal Information Institute. Oklahoma Code 260:135-5-52 – Vision Standards and Problems

Road Skills Test

An examiner rides with you and evaluates lane changes, turns, and parking. Fail, and you can retest after at least one day. For applicants in the graduated program, a certified designated examiner may administer the driving portion in place of a Service Oklahoma examiner.5Oklahoma Statutes. Standard License vs. REAL ID

As of May 7, 2025, a standard Oklahoma license no longer works for boarding domestic flights or entering federal facilities. You need a REAL ID-compliant license or another federally approved ID, such as a valid U.S. passport, for those purposes.12Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID

A REAL ID costs the same $38.50 as a standard Class D license but requires two proofs of Oklahoma residency at your in-person appointment along with the identity and Social Security documents. REAL ID licenses carry a gold star in the upper right corner.6Service Oklahoma. Required Documents

Renewing and Replacing a License

Oklahoma issues licenses in four-year and eight-year terms. Renewals are $38.50 for a standard Class D license.11Oklahoma Department of Public Safety. Digital Driver License Classes and Fees You can renew online if you’re a U.S. citizen with a valid, unexpired, unsuspended Oklahoma license and you’re not applying for a REAL ID for the first time. New photo, name change, or immigration documents mean coming in person.13Service Oklahoma. Renew and Replace Driver License

An expired license can still serve as valid identification for renewal purposes for up to three years. After that window, you’re treated as a new applicant.7Oklahoma Statutes. Oklahoma Code 47-6-115 – Expiration and Renewal of Driver Licenses

A replacement for a lost or stolen license costs $25 and follows the same online-versus-in-person rules as renewal.14Service Oklahoma. Adding a Motorcycle Endorsement

A motorcycle endorsement on your Class D license requires a separate written exam and a riding test. The riding test can be waived if you complete the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s Basic Rider Course, which Oklahoma offers free through the Safe Riders program run by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and Department of Transportation.16Oklahoma Department of Public Safety. Safe Riders The endorsement adds a $4.00 application fee on top of the license fee.17Service Oklahoma. Apply for Motorcycle License

Keeping Your License

Oklahoma can suspend or revoke driving privileges for DUI offenses, accumulated traffic violation points, unpaid court-ordered fines, and certain criminal convictions.18Oklahoma Statutes. Oklahoma Code 47-6-205 – Mandatory Revocation of Driving Privilege By driving on Oklahoma roads you’ve already consented to chemical testing if an officer has reasonable grounds to suspect impairment, and refusing the test triggers its own automatic revocation.19Oklahoma Statutes. Oklahoma Code 47-753 – Refusal to Submit to Test

Getting a license back after suspension or revocation depends on the cause. Unpaid fines require settling the balance and showing proof of compliance. DUI-related revocations require an alcohol and drug assessment through a provider certified by the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, followed by whichever course or treatment program the evaluation calls for.20Oklahoma Statutes. Oklahoma Code 47-6-212.2 – Required Completion of Alcohol and Drug Assessment and Evaluation Reinstatement carries a $75 processing fee per suspension or revocation on your record, plus a single $25 reinstatement fee.

Driving while your license is suspended, revoked, or canceled is a misdemeanor, with fines that climb on each conviction and jail time possible by the third offense.21Oklahoma Statutes. Oklahoma Code 47-6-303 – Driving Without License or While License is Canceled, Denied, Suspended, or Revoked
