Oklahoma Driver’s License Renewal: Online, In Person, or by Mail

An Oklahoma driver’s license renewal now runs through Service Oklahoma, which replaced the old Department of Public Safety tag agency system. You have three ways to renew: online through the Navigate portal, in person at a licensed operator (the new name for tag agencies), or by mail if you’re a military member or resident living out of state. A standard four-year Class D renewal costs $38.50, an eight-year card costs $77, and drivers 65 and older pay nothing.¹

Four Years or Eight Years

Every Oklahoma driver gets to choose between a four-year and eight-year license at renewal.² The eight-year option isn’t limited by age; it’s a matter of what you’d rather spend now versus in four years. The one exception is for non-citizens, whose license term can’t extend beyond the period their immigration documents authorize.

Renewing Online

Online renewal happens at navigate.ok.gov.³ You qualify if you’re a U.S. citizen with a valid Oklahoma address on file, your current license isn’t suspended, and you’re not adding REAL ID for the first time. Log in, confirm your details, pick a four- or eight-year term, and pay by card. No vision test is required. You can print a temporary license right away, and the permanent card typically arrives within 30 days.¹

If your records don’t match or you have outstanding fines, the online application will be rejected and you’ll need to go in person.

Renewing in Person

Visit any licensed operator or a Service Oklahoma drive test center. Bring your current license. If it’s lost, a U.S. passport or certified birth certificate works instead. If you’ve changed your name, bring the original or a certified copy of the marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order. If your address has changed, bring a utility bill, lease, or bank statement dated within the last 60 days. PO Boxes aren’t accepted.

At the counter you’ll fill out an application, get a new photo, and pay. A temporary paper license is issued on the spot; the permanent card comes by mail. A vision test is required if your license has been expired for more than a year.

Renewing by Mail

Mail renewal is limited to military members and their dependents stationed outside Oklahoma, plus residents temporarily living out of state. Send in a completed renewal application (available from Service Oklahoma), a copy of your current or expired license, proof of Oklahoma residency, and a check or money order made out to Service Oklahoma. Military members should include a copy of their military ID or deployment orders. Processing takes up to 30 days.

Fees by Age

Oklahoma’s renewal fees fall sharply once you reach 62. The schedule for a four-year Class D license:⁴

Under 62: $38.50
Age 62: $21.25
Age 63: $17.50
Age 64: $13.75
Age 65 and older: free

The eight-year option runs $77 for drivers under 62. Replacing a lost or stolen license is $25 at any age.

REAL ID at Renewal

Federal REAL ID enforcement began May 7, 2025, and a non-compliant Oklahoma license may not get you through TSA airport security or into federal buildings like courthouses and military bases.⁵ Agencies are allowed to phase in enforcement through May 5, 2027, so how strictly the rules apply depends on the agency, but full enforcement is coming.⁶

Renewal is the natural moment to upgrade. If your current card reads “Not for REAL ID Purposes,” ask for the compliant version. One catch: you cannot add REAL ID for the first time online. That has to happen in person.

To upgrade, bring all of the following:⁵

One proof of identity: birth certificate or U.S. passport
Two proofs of Oklahoma residency: utility bills, bank statements, or similar
Your Social Security number (physical card not required if Service Oklahoma can verify electronically)
Every name-change document linking your birth name to your current name

Non-citizens provide immigration documents such as a Permanent Resident Card or Employment Authorization Card in place of a birth certificate or passport.

If Your License Has Already Expired

There is no grace period. Driving the day after your license expires is a misdemeanor carrying a fine between $50 and $300 plus court costs, and up to 30 days in jail.⁷ Some auto insurers will also deny a claim if you were driving unlicensed at the time of an accident, so the exposure isn’t limited to the ticket.

How hard the renewal itself gets depends on how long you’ve waited:

Expired less than a year: straightforward renewal, no extra tests
Expired one to three years: renewal is still possible, but you’ll take a vision test
Expired more than three years: no renewal option; you apply for a new license and retake both the written knowledge exam and the driving test¹

Outstanding traffic tickets or unpaid fines can also block a renewal until they’re resolved. Clear those first if you know they exist.

Commercial Licenses

Commercial driver’s licenses run on a separate track and can’t be renewed online. CDL holders renew in person and must keep a current federal medical examiner’s certificate, generally renewed every two years. If the medical certificate lapses, you’ll need a new exam before the CDL can be renewed, and it’s your responsibility to get the updated certificate to Service Oklahoma. A lapsed medical certificate can trigger a CDL downgrade, so track that date separately from your license expiration.⁸
