Oklahoma PE License Renewal: Fee, 30 PDH, and Portal

An Oklahoma PE license renewal runs on a two-year cycle, costs $150, and requires you to self-certify that you’ve completed 30 professional development hours (PDHs). Everything happens through the OKPELS Portal run by the Oklahoma State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. Miss your expiration date and your license lapses the same day, with reinstatement penalties that climb the longer you wait.

Renewal Fee and When It’s Due

The biennial renewal fee for an individual professional engineer is $150, and it’s non-refundable. There is no single statewide renewal deadline. Each license carries its own expiration date tied to when you were originally licensed, and that date is printed on your license and shown in the Board’s online portal.

Age no longer changes anything. The Board previously waived renewal fees for licensees 70 and older, but since January 1, 2021, every active licensee pays the full $150.1Oklahoma State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Surveyors. The 30-Hour Continuing Education Requirement

You need 30 PDHs in each two-year renewal cycle.2Legal Information Institute. Oklahoma Administrative Code 245:15-11-5 – Requirements for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors All hours must relate to the practice of engineering, and they can be technical, ethical, or business content. There’s no mandatory ethics hour minimum for professional engineers in Oklahoma.3Oklahoma State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Surveyors. Subchapters 245:15-11-5 – 245:15-11-6

The Board awards one PDH per contact hour of actual participation. Qualifying activities are broad: college coursework, short courses, webinars, workshops, in-house training, technical presentations at meetings and conferences, teaching those same activities, authoring papers or books in your area of competence (with extra credit for peer-reviewed work), active participation in technical societies and standards or code committees, licensing exam development, and being awarded a patent.3Oklahoma State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Surveyors. Earn more than 30 hours in a cycle and you can carry up to 15 excess hours into the next renewal period.2Legal Information Institute. Oklahoma Administrative Code 245:15-11-5 – Requirements for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors

Calendar Year Reporting Option

You can opt out of the biennial tracking window and report on a calendar year basis instead: 15 PDHs per calendar year, same 30-hour total per cycle. The tradeoff is that calendar year reporting allows no carryover of excess hours.2Legal Information Institute. Oklahoma Administrative Code 245:15-11-5 – Requirements for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors Most engineers stay on the standard biennial method because the 15-hour cushion gives more flexibility.

Military Service Exemption

If you’re called to temporary active military duty for more than 120 consecutive days in a calendar year, you’re exempt from the PDH requirement for that renewal period. The exemption applies to reservists and guard members called up for deployment or pre-deployment training, not to career military receiving routine duty-station changes. Submit your military orders to the Board to claim it.4Oklahoma State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Surveyors. Frequently Asked Questions

Renewing Through the OKPELS Portal

Log in to the OKPELS Portal with your existing credentials and follow the prompts to certify your continuing education and pay the $150 fee. You do not submit individual PDH records with your renewal. The Board uses a self-certification model: you affirm that you’ve completed 30 hours and keep your own documentation in case you’re audited.4Oklahoma State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Surveyors. Before you start, confirm your contact information, employer details, and professional affiliations are current. The portal accepts major credit cards and electronic checks. Submission generates a digital confirmation receipt, and you can download an updated digital pocket card or wait for the physical card by mail.

What Happens If You Miss Your Expiration Date

A license not renewed by its expiration date lapses immediately and goes inactive. You cannot practice, sign, or seal engineering documents while your license is inactive.4Oklahoma State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Surveyors. Frequently Asked Questions You have 180 days to reinstate online, and the penalty on top of the $150 renewal fee grows:1Oklahoma State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Surveyors. Oklahoma Administrative Rules – Chapter 2 – 245:2-1-18 Fees and Penalties

  • 1 to 30 days late: $50 penalty, $200 total
  • 31 to 90 days late: $100 penalty, $250 total
  • 91 to 180 days late: $200 penalty, $350 total

Your 30 PDHs still have to be done before reinstatement goes through. After 180 days, you can no longer reinstate through the portal and must file a new application for Board approval, which takes considerably longer.4Oklahoma State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Surveyors. The Board can waive reinstatement penalties for documented hardship or when a renewal was blocked by Oklahoma Tax Commission noncompliance, but the written waiver request has to come in before you pay the penalty.1Oklahoma State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Surveyors. Keep Your PDH Records for Five Years

The Board conducts random audits. Keep completion certificates, attendance records, transcripts, and any other verification for five years after the renewal date they cover.4Oklahoma State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Surveyors. Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re selected, you’ll get a notice with a deadline to submit a completed log form and supporting documentation. The Board does not grant extra time to earn additional hours if you come up short, and there’s no built-in grace period to track down missing paperwork unless you can demonstrate a hardship the Board approves. Audit failure is treated as a rule violation and can lead to disciplinary action. You also can’t switch to retired status to avoid an audit once one is underway.5Oklahoma State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Surveyors. Subchapters 245:15-11-11 – 245:15-11-13

Penalties for Practicing on an Expired License

Practicing engineering in Oklahoma without an active license is a misdemeanor carrying a fine between $250 and $2,000. That covers practicing without a license, practicing on an expired one, and falsely claiming to be licensed. The Board can also impose administrative penalties from $250 to $10,000 per violation, with the amount based on severity, your history, and whether you showed good-faith efforts to comply.6New York Codes, Rules and Regulations. Oklahoma Statutes Title 59 Section 475.20 – Criminal and Administrative Penalties The Board investigates complaints and unlicensed-practice referrals, so continuing to sign documents after a lapse is how an administrative problem becomes a permanent record.

A Note on Firms and Retired Status

If you own or manage a firm offering engineering services, note that the firm’s Certificate of Authorization renews separately from your individual license at $200 every two years, through a separate firm login on the portal. Any company practicing engineering in Oklahoma needs a COA, with or without a physical office in the state, and the firm must employ a full-time Oklahoma-licensed engineer to keep it active.7Oklahoma State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Surveyors. Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re done practicing, Oklahoma offers retired status at no charge, available online or by mail at any age, with a “retired” wallet card mailed within about 30 days. Retired status is also free if your license expired within the last six months. Once you select it, you cannot practice in Oklahoma from that date forward, though you can later apply for reinstatement by paying the applicable fees and meeting the continuing education requirements.7Oklahoma State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Surveyors.
