Oklahoma PE Requirements: Exams, Experience & Licensure

To earn an Oklahoma PE license, you need to meet four Oklahoma PE license requirements set by the State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors (OKPELS): a qualifying engineering degree, a passing score on the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, four or more years of supervised engineering experience, and a passing score on both the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam and the Oklahoma Law and Engineering Examination. The application fee is $150, and once licensed you renew every two years with 30 hours of continuing education.

Education You Need

The standard qualifying credential is a bachelor’s degree in engineering from a program accredited by ABET’s Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC/ABET). Oklahoma statute recognizes three other pathways as well.¹

An EAC/ABET-accredited bachelor’s degree in engineering.
A Board-approved related science bachelor’s degree, which triggers a longer experience requirement.
A master’s degree from an EAC/ABET or ETAC/ABET-accredited program, so long as the institution also offers an ABET-accredited bachelor’s in the same or similar discipline.
An earned doctoral degree in engineering that the Board finds acceptable.

If your degree comes from a non-ABET program, or from an institution outside the Washington Accord, the Board requires an evaluation through the NCEES Credentials Evaluation Service or another Board-approved evaluator. The evaluation compares your coursework against the NCEES Engineering Education Standard, and any gaps it identifies may need to be filled with additional coursework before you can move on.²

The Fundamentals of Engineering Exam

The FE exam is your first licensing test and is designed for students near graduation or recent graduates. It contains 110 questions, runs six hours, and is offered year-round at Pearson VUE testing centers. You register directly through your MyNCEES account. No OKPELS approval is required before you sit for it.³⁴

Content covers mathematics, engineering economics, ethics, and topics tied to your chosen discipline. Passing earns you the Engineer Intern (EI) designation, which lets you start accumulating supervised experience toward the PE license. The EI certification carries no application fee in Oklahoma.⁵

There is one waiver. Oklahoma will consider excusing the FE for applicants with at least fifteen years of progressive engineering experience gained after the qualifying degree. The Board reviews these requests closely against the full application and treats them as a narrow exception.¹

Supervised Experience

How much experience you need depends on your degree.¹

ABET-accredited bachelor’s in engineering: four years after the degree is conferred.
Board-approved related science degree: six years after the bachelor’s is conferred.
Master’s degree in engineering: three years after the master’s is conferred.
Doctoral degree in engineering: two years after the doctorate is conferred.

The experience has to be progressive, showing increasing responsibility and complexity rather than the same task repeated. The Board looks at whether you exercised engineering judgment and whether a licensed PE supervised your work. Purely administrative roles or duties that don’t involve applying engineering principles won’t count.

You’ll need at least five references to verify the experience, and three of them must be licensed PEs with personal knowledge of your engineering work. No reference can be a current Board member or an immediate family member, and the Board will not credit any experience period that isn’t verified by at least one reference.⁶

Graduate Degrees and Pre-Degree Work

A graduate degree can shorten the timeline, but the same degree can’t do double duty: if you’re using it to satisfy the education requirement, it doesn’t also count as experience credit. The degree must be relevant to your area of practice, and the credit cannot overlap with time you spent working.⁷

The Board may grant partial credit for engineering work done before the qualifying degree, up to half of the total required experience. ABET-accredited cooperative education programs can count toward that pre-degree credit; non-accredited co-op work is capped at six months.¹

The PE Exam

The Principles and Practice of Engineering exam tests your ability to practice in a specific discipline, and you choose the discipline that aligns with your documented work experience. Most disciplines use multiple-choice questions; some include scenario-based problems. Registration goes through NCEES.⁴

Oklahoma lets you sit for the PE before your full experience requirement is complete. You take and pass the exam, finish the required years, and then submit your license application. That flexibility means you don’t have to wait until the very end of your experience clock to tackle the exam.⁸

The Oklahoma Law and Engineering Examination

Beyond the two NCEES exams, Oklahoma requires every PE applicant to pass the Oklahoma Law and Engineering Examination (OLE). It applies to original applicants and comity applicants alike. The OLE covers Oklahoma Statutes Title 59 (the engineering practice act) and the Oklahoma Administrative Rules in Title 245 that govern how the Board operates.²

You complete the OLE and submit the answer sheet to the Board for scoring as part of your application package. Plan to prepare for it the way you would the FE or PE; it’s a real exam, not a formality.

Filing Your Application

You don’t file with OKPELS until you’ve completed all education, examination, and experience requirements.⁴ When you’re ready, the application includes your professional history, detailed descriptions of your engineering work, and the completed OLE answer sheet. Everything runs through the Board’s online portal.⁹

The application fee for an original PE license is $150.⁵ Your five references must verify qualifying experience without leaving gaps in dates, and again, three have to be licensed PEs with personal knowledge of your work.⁶

The Board reviews conviction history as part of the process. For comity and temporary license applicants, statute expressly bars anyone convicted of a felony or disciplined by any licensing board for engineering, surveying, or architecture, and the Board will look at your history for original applications as well.¹⁰ Application fees are not refunded regardless of the outcome.

If You’re Already Licensed in Another State

If you hold a PE license elsewhere, you can apply for an Oklahoma license by comity. The comity application fee is $250.⁵ The cleanest approach is to transmit your NCEES Record directly to OKPELS, since it packages your education, exam history, and experience verifications in one place. You still complete the OLE, submit a notarized Verification of Lawful Presence form with supporting documentation (a driver’s license alone won’t do), and provide five references, three of them licensed PEs or professional land surveyors with personal knowledge of your work.²

Comity applications can move faster if you have an approved engineering degree, passed the FE (if you were licensed after 1996), documented experience with acceptable references, passed the PE (if Oklahoma required it when you were originally licensed, using a 1982 cutoff), and no disciplinary actions or felony convictions. Active-duty military personnel and their spouses who hold a PE license in another state are exempt from the application fee and pro-rated license fee for expedited temporary or comity licensure.⁵

Keeping Your License Active

Oklahoma PE licenses renew every two years. The biennial renewal fee is $150, and you must earn 30 professional development hours (PDHs) during each renewal period. If you exceed 30 in a cycle, you can carry up to 15 forward into the next one.¹¹⁵

PDHs must be relevant to engineering practice. Technical content qualifies, and so does ethical or business content that ties to ethical concerns, codes of conduct, standards of practice, project management, risk assessment, or similar skills. There is no mandatory ethics minimum for PEs; the content just has to connect to your practice. Acceptable activities include seminars, university courses, published technical papers, and professional society meetings. OKPELS runs random audits, so keep proof of completion. You can track and report PDHs through MyNCEES.¹²¹¹

Late renewal penalties climb quickly:

1 to 30 days late: $50 penalty on top of the renewal fee.
31 to 90 days late: $100 penalty.
91 to 180 days late: $200 penalty.

The Board can waive reinstatement penalties for documented hardships, including non-compliance holds from the Oklahoma Tax Commission, but you have to request the waiver in writing with supporting documentation before paying the penalty. Deployed active-duty service members who held a valid license at the time of deployment can renew without paying renewal or reinstatement fees. If a license lapses entirely, the re-licensure application fee is $250. You can also retire your license at no cost, but a retired license carries no privilege to practice or offer engineering services.⁵
