Oklahoma Tax-Free Weekend: Dates, $100 Rule, and Exclusions

The Oklahoma tax-free weekend runs from Friday, August 7 through Sunday, August 9, 2026. During those three days, any article of clothing or footwear priced under $100 is exempt from state and local sales tax, which saves roughly 8 to 11 percent depending on where you shop.

When the Holiday Starts and Ends

The exemption opens at 12:01 a.m. Friday, August 7, 2026, and closes at midnight Sunday, August 9, 2026.1Oklahoma State Government. Sales Tax Holiday State law fixes the holiday to the first Friday through Sunday in August every year, so the dates shift but the pattern does not. Your purchase and payment have to be complete before midnight Sunday for the exemption to apply.

What Qualifies Under the $100 Rule

The exemption covers clothing and footwear designed to be worn on the body, as long as each individual item is priced under $100.1Oklahoma State Government. Sales Tax Holiday The cap is per item, not per receipt. Five shirts at $99 each are all tax-free. A single $100 jacket is fully taxable at the regular rate.

Common qualifying items include:

  • Shirts, pants, skirts, dresses, and uniforms
  • Shoes, sneakers, sandals, and non-athletic boots
  • Socks, underwear, and diapers
  • Coats, raincoats, and winter jackets
  • Gloves, scarves, hats, and hosiery

There is no cap on the number of qualifying items you can buy, and you do not have to be a student, parent, or Oklahoma resident to use the exemption.1Oklahoma State Government. What Does Not Qualify

Several categories are excluded no matter the price:

  • Accessories such as jewelry, handbags, luggage, umbrellas, wallets, and watches1Oklahoma State Government. Sales Tax Holiday
  • Clothing or footwear designed primarily for a sport or for protective use, like cleats, football pads, and sport-specific goggles
  • Rentals of formal wear, which stay fully taxable because the exemption covers only purchases

School supplies, backpacks, computers, tablets, and other electronics are also outside the holiday. Bills have been introduced to add school supplies and athletic gear, but as of 2026 the exemption still covers only clothing and footwear.3Oklahoma Senate. One trap to watch for: a gift set that combines an eligible item (say, a tie) with an ineligible one (a wallet) does not qualify at all, and sets normally sold together cannot be unbundled and priced separately to fit under the $100 cap.4Legal Information Institute. Online Orders, Layaway, and Rain Checks

You do not have to shop in person. Orders placed online, by phone, or by catalog qualify as long as you order and pay during the Friday-through-Sunday window and the retailer accepts the order for immediate shipment. Delivery can arrive the following week and the sale is still tax-free, because timing is based on when you paid.2Oklahoma.gov. Sales Tax Holiday Information

Layaway follows the same logic. A layaway item is tax-free only if you make the final payment and take delivery during the holiday weekend. An item placed on layaway weeks earlier qualifies if you pay the balance and pick it up during the three days. Placing a new layaway during the holiday but finishing payment later does not preserve the exemption.4Legal Information Institute. Rain checks work the same way. Using a rain check issued earlier to buy an eligible item during the holiday is tax-free. A rain check issued during the holiday but redeemed the following week is not.

Exchanges are protected. Swapping a tax-free item for the same item in a different size or color after the holiday carries no additional tax. But returning a tax-free item and applying the credit to a different purchase after the weekend means you owe the regular sales tax on the new item.2Oklahoma.gov. Sales Tax Holiday Information

If a Store Charges You Tax by Mistake

Keep your receipt and go back to the retailer for a refund of the overcharge. Stores that collect tax on an eligible item during the holiday are required to remit that amount to the Oklahoma Tax Commission as “Excess Tax Collected,” so the money does not stay with the store.2Oklahoma.gov.
