The Oklahoma written driving test is a 20-question multiple-choice exam given on a computer at a Service Oklahoma licensing office or an approved Career Tech Testing Center, and you need at least 15 correct answers, a score of 75 percent, to pass. The system grades your answers immediately, so you leave knowing whether you passed. One thing to plan around: the test is currently offered only in English.1Service Oklahoma. What the Test Covers
Every question comes from the Oklahoma Driver’s Manual, free online through Service Oklahoma or in print at local tag agencies. Nothing on the exam sits outside that book, which makes it your single best study tool.
Expect questions on:
- Traffic laws, including right-of-way at intersections, speed limits for different road types, and when you’re required to stop
- Road signs identified by shape, color, and meaning across regulatory, warning, and guide categories
- Pavement markings, including what solid yellow lines and white dashed lines mean for your lane
- Safe driving practices such as turn signal use, following distance, and handling common hazards
- Oklahoma-specific rules, including the state’s Move Over law, DUI penalties, and seat belt requirements
Sign recognition trips up more first-timers than any other topic. Knowing a red octagon means stop won’t get you far. You need to recognize less common signs — the pennant-shaped no-passing warning, the orange diamond for construction — by shape alone, without reading the words on them. If you only have time to focus on one category, make it signs.
Who Has to Take It
Not everyone applying for a learner permit sits for the written exam. If you completed an approved driver education course through a secondary school or a commercial driving school, you can skip the written test by presenting your completion certificate.2Service Oklahoma. Learner Permit
Parent-taught driver education does not qualify for that waiver.2Service Oklahoma. Learner Permit If a parent or guardian taught you through an approved parent-taught provider, you still have to pass the written test before you can be issued a permit.
Adults 18 and older applying for their first Oklahoma license also have to take the written test, along with the vision screening and eventually the driving skills test.3Oklahoma State Courts Network. Oklahoma Code 47-6-101 – Persons Required to be Licensed If you’re transferring a valid license from another state, the process is handled separately; check the out-of-state transfer page on the Service Oklahoma site for current requirements.
Applicants under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian at the office, or bring a notarized Parent Authorization Form if that’s not possible.2Service Oklahoma. Learner Permit There’s no workaround, so sort this out before you go.
Where to Take It, and What It Costs
You can schedule the written test through the Service Oklahoma website by selecting “Learner’s Permit / Class D Written Test” and picking a nearby office and time.4Service Oklahoma. New Driver License Appointments are strongly recommended. Some offices take walk-ins, but wait times are unpredictable.
You can also test at an approved Career Tech Testing Center for a $25 fee. Career Tech centers administer only the written portion, so you’ll still need a separate visit to a Service Oklahoma office for the vision screening and to have the permit issued.2Service Oklahoma. Learner Permit
There is no separate fee for a first attempt at a Service Oklahoma location. The learner permit itself costs $42.50 when issued.2Service Oklahoma. Learner Permit
Bring your documents. Missing an item means you don’t test that day. You’ll need one proof of identity — a certified birth certificate or an unexpired U.S. passport, original or certified copy, not a notarized copy — and you need to know your Social Security number, though the physical card isn’t required.5Service Oklahoma. Required Documents Fill out the Driver License Application before your visit to save time. If you want a REAL ID-compliant license rather than a standard one, you’ll also need two proofs of your current Oklahoma address and documentation for any legal name changes.6Service Oklahoma. How to Study
Read the Oklahoma Driver’s Manual cover to cover at least once rather than skimming. Every question on the test comes from it, and the difference between skimming and reading shows up on the sign and right-of-way questions.
Service Oklahoma also offers a free practice test on its Driver Study Hub that mirrors the real exam’s format with 20 multiple-choice questions.7Service Oklahoma. Driver Study Hub Take it several times until you’re scoring well above 15 before you book your appointment. If a category keeps catching you out, go back to that chapter of the manual before you retest.
If You Don’t Pass
Failing isn’t the end. You can retake the written test, and Service Oklahoma adds a $4 fee for each failed attempt, rolled into the permit issuance cost when you eventually pass.2Service Oklahoma. Learner Permit Fail twice before passing and your total permit fee comes out to $50.50 rather than $42.50.
Use the time between attempts. Run through the practice test until you’re consistently scoring well above the minimum, focus on whichever category tripped you up — signs, right-of-way, or Oklahoma-specific laws — and reread the relevant sections of the manual.
What Happens After You Pass
Passing the written test is one piece of getting licensed, not the whole process. You’ll also take a vision screening at the Service Oklahoma office during your visit, which checks visual acuity, field of vision, and your ability to distinguish traffic-signal colors; bring your glasses or contacts if you wear them.8Oklahoma State Courts Network. Oklahoma Code 47-6-110 – Examination of Applicants
Once you pass the written test and vision screening, you’re issued a learner permit under Oklahoma’s Graduated Driver License program. The permit comes with enforced restrictions on hours and supervision, and the behind-the-wheel driving skills test is a separate exam you’ll take later, after you’ve held the permit for the required period and logged the required practice hours.9Service Oklahoma.
