Oregon PE license renewal happens every two years through the MyOSBEELS portal: you pay a $230 biennial fee and report 30 professional development hours (PDH) earned during the cycle. Miss the expiration date and an $80 delinquent fee hits on day one. Let the license sit delinquent for more than five years and you lose the right to renew at all.1Oregon Public Law. Oregon Code 672.170 – Renewal of Certificate
When Your License Expires
Renewal runs on a biennial cycle set by OAR 820-010-0505, and your expiration date is tied to your individual registration rather than a uniform statewide date.2Oregon Public Law. OAR 820-010-0505 – Biennial Renewal of Registration or Certification The Oregon State Board of Examiners for Engineering and Land Surveying (OSBEELS) sends email reminders, but the deadline doesn’t shift if you miss the notice. Log in to MyOSBEELS to confirm your exact date.
Fees
The biennial renewal fee is $230, paid by credit or debit card inside the MyOSBEELS portal.3Oregon State Board of Examiners for Engineering & Land Surveying. Fees If you renew after the expiration date, an $80 delinquent fee is added on the first day you’re late, taking the total to $310.2Oregon Public Law. OAR 820-010-0505 – Biennial Renewal of Registration or Certification The $80 is a flat charge per biennial period, not a monthly penalty that compounds.
The 30-Hour PDH Requirement
Each registrant has to complete 30 professional development hours during the two-year cycle, and every activity must be pertinent to your license or further your professional education.4Oregon Public Law. OAR 820-010-0635 – Continuing Professional Development5Oregon State Board of Examiners for Engineering & Land Surveying. Continuing Education Information OSBEELS does not pre-approve courses. You decide what qualifies, and that decision can be second-guessed in an audit.
What Counts, and What Doesn’t
Tutorials, web-based courses, seminars, workshops, professional conventions, and college courses all count at face value with no cap. Teaching a course earns credit the first time you deliver it; repeat offerings of the same course do not. Active participation in a professional society is capped at eight PDH per biennium, and independent self-study is capped at six.5Oregon State Board of Examiners for Engineering & Land Surveying. Routine job duties don’t count, and neither does basic office software training. The activity has to expand your knowledge beyond what your current position already requires.
Carryover and Proration
If you earn more than 30 hours in a cycle, up to 15 extra hours from courses or activities carry forward into the next biennium.6Legal Information Institute. Oregon Admin Code 820-010-0635 – Continuing Professional Development Registrants who held the license for less than six months during a cycle are exempt from PDH for that period, provided they aren’t under disciplinary action. If you were licensed for six months or more but not the full two years, the 30-hour requirement is prorated.4Oregon Public Law. OAR 820-010-0635 – Continuing Professional Development
Keeping Records for Audits
You don’t send PDH proof with your renewal. OSBEELS runs random audits after each cycle, and selected registrants have one month from the notification email to submit everything. Keep all supporting documentation for five years.6Legal Information Institute. Oregon Admin Code 820-010-0635 – Continuing Professional Development
Your CPD Organizational Form should list each activity with the sponsoring organization, date, location, and instructor or speaker name.7Oregon State Board of Examiners for Engineering & Land Surveying. If you track hours through the NCEES Continuing Professional Competency system, download your transcript as a PDF from MyNCEES and upload it to MyOSBEELS yourself. OSBEELS does not accept transcripts sent directly from NCEES, but the downloaded PDF is accepted as supporting documentation.5Oregon State Board of Examiners for Engineering & Land Surveying. Submitting the Renewal
All renewals go through MyOSBEELS. Log in, open the renewal option, confirm your contact and employment information, enter your PDH activities on the CPD form, sign electronically, and pay the $230 fee. A confirmation appears when the payment clears.9Oregon State Board of Examiners for Engineering & Land Surveying. Maintaining a License Have your PDH records in front of you before starting, and make sure the email on file is current so audit notices actually reach you.
If You Missed the Deadline
Missing the date doesn’t erase your license. Under ORS 672.170, late renewal is still allowed; you pay the $230 fee plus the $80 delinquent fee and submit a CPD form showing the full 30 PDH for the period.1Oregon Public Law. The hard limit is five years. A certificate delinquent for more than five years cannot be renewed, and getting back in likely means starting the application process over.1Oregon Public Law. Oregon Code 672.170 – Renewal of Certificate During any gap, do not perform engineering work in Oregon.
Practicing on an Expired License
Practicing engineering without a valid certificate, or attempting to use an expired one, is prohibited under ORS 672.045 and is a Class A misdemeanor.10Oregon Public Law. Oregon Code 672.045 – Prohibited Activities Relating to Practices11Oregon Public Law. Oregon Code 672.991 – Penalties12Oregon Public Law. Oregon Code 161.635 – Fines for Misdemeanors The board can also pursue civil penalties separately under ORS 672.325. Prosecution can start up to two years after the offense is discovered, with an outer limit of ten years from when it occurred. Working while unlicensed can also void your professional liability coverage and leave you personally exposed on any project you signed off on. If the license lapses, stop practicing until it’s restored.
Inactive and Retired Status
If you aren’t practicing in Oregon, two alternatives to full active renewal exist. Inactive status is available if you hold a current engineering license in another jurisdiction; inactive registrants cannot practice in Oregon, and you request the change through MyOSBEELS.13Oregon State Board of Examiners for Engineering & Land Surveying. License Status Changes
Retired status removes your authorization to practice engineering as defined in ORS Chapter 672. You have five years from the date of the retirement request to reinstate to active status; after that window closes, the path back is significantly harder or may not exist at all.13Oregon State Board of Examiners for Engineering & Land Surveying. License Status Changes If there’s any chance you’ll return to practice, keep that clock in view.
