The Site Evaluation Comes First

How Oregon Sizes the System
Oregon sizes systems by bedroom count, not occupancy. Standard design flow for a single-family home is 450 gallons per day. Minimum Separation Distances
Table 1 under OAR 340-071-0220 sets minimum distances between septic components and surrounding features. Distances differ depending on whether you measure from the drainfield absorption area or from the tank and distribution piping:

Installation and Pre-Cover Inspection
Your licensed installer places the tank, distribution lines, and drainfield media according to the approved plans, and all components must remain fully exposed. When the system is installed, you file a Final Inspection Request and Notice through Oregon’s e-Permitting system with an as-built drawing, installation photos, and a materials list. Maintenance obligations track the type of system you installed.
Standard gravity-fed systems carry no state-mandated inspection schedule. Sand filter systems require at least annual inspection of the tank and system components, including sludge measurement, pump calibration, and lateral cleaning. Some things should never go down a drain connected to any septic system: cooking grease, chemical drain cleaners, paint and solvents, pesticides, antifreeze, and pharmaceuticals. Anything past those thresholds requires a full construction-installation permit with a new site evaluation. Enforcement and Penalties
Operating a system in violation of the rules starts an enforcement process with a written notice from DEQ or the local agent identifying the rule violated, describing the problem, and giving a specified period to fix it.
