PA Change of Address Online: Steps, Deadline, and Fees

You can handle a PA change of address online through PennDOT’s Driver and Vehicle Services portal at dmv.penndot.gov. The submission is free, takes about five minutes, and updates your driver’s license or photo ID, your vehicle registration, and your voter registration in a single step. State law gives you 15 days from your move to report the new address.1Pennsylvania General Assembly. Pennsylvania Code Title 75 1515 – Notice of Change of Name or Address

One boundary before you start: the online system only works for moves within Pennsylvania. If you are moving out of state, you have to mail PennDOT Form DL-82 instead.2Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Change a Driver’s License or Photo ID Name or Address

What You Need Before You Log In

Have these ready. The session times out, and starting over is the most common reason people give up partway through.

  • Your Pennsylvania driver’s license or photo ID number.
  • The last four digits of your Social Security number.
  • Your date of birth.
  • Your license plate number, if you own a vehicle and want your registration updated at the same time.
  • Your current address exactly as it appears on your ID. Small formatting differences (Apt vs. Apartment) can cause the system to reject the match.
  • Your new address, written in standard postal format.

You do not upload any documents for a standard address change. Proof of residency only comes into play if you later apply for a REAL ID.2Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Change a Driver’s License or Photo ID Name or Address

The 15-Day Deadline

Two separate Pennsylvania statutes each give you 15 days. One covers your driver’s license or photo ID and requires you to report your old address, your new address, and the number on your card.1Pennsylvania General Assembly. Pennsylvania Code Title 75 1515 – Notice of Change of Name or Address The other covers vehicle registration and applies to every vehicle titled in your name.3Pennsylvania General Assembly. Do it promptly. An outdated address means missing registration renewal notices, inspection reminders, and any court mail tied to a traffic citation.

How to Submit Online

Go to PennDOT’s Online Driver and Vehicle Services page. Under either the driver services or vehicle services section, click “Change Your Address.”4Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Online Driver and Vehicle Services The link takes you to a secure login at dmv.penndot.gov.

Enter your license or ID number, the last four digits of your Social Security number, and your date of birth. Enter the new address and review the confirmation screen, which shows the old and new addresses side by side. After you click the final submit button, wait for the “process complete” confirmation before closing the window. Print or save that page as your receipt.

What It Costs

Nothing. There is no fee for a non-commercial driver’s license address change, a photo ID address change, or a vehicle registration address change, and PennDOT charges no extra processing fee for using the online system.5Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. If you would rather carry a new physical license showing the updated address instead of the free card, you can order a duplicate. A duplicate non-commercial license costs $42.50, or $48.50 with a motorcycle endorsement.5Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Payments and Fees Most people skip it and just carry the card.

What Arrives After You Submit

PennDOT mails a free address update card to your new address within 10 days.2Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. If the card has not arrived after two weeks, log back into the portal to confirm the change went through, or call PennDOT customer service. A missing card sometimes means the address was mistyped or the submission never finalized, and it is better to catch that before a traffic stop.

Voter Registration Moves With You

Pennsylvania treats any address change submitted to PennDOT as a voter registration address change by default, unless you specifically opt out during the online process.7Pennsylvania General Assembly. You will see a voter registration section during the online flow that asks you to confirm eligibility and pick a party affiliation. Agencies PennDOT Will Not Notify for You

PennDOT covers your license, registration, and voter record. Nothing else. Each of the following needs a separate update.

U.S. Postal Service

File a change of address with USPS to forward your mail. Online at usps.com costs $1.25 for identity verification, or you can complete PS Form 3575 at your local post office for free.9USPS. Standard Forward Mail and Change of Address Permanent forwarding covers First-Class Mail for 12 months. After that, mail goes back to the sender, so use the year to update every account that writes to you.

Internal Revenue Service

The IRS does not learn your new address from PennDOT or USPS. If you move before your next tax return, mail Form 8822; processing takes four to six weeks.10Internal Revenue Service. The risk is moving after you file: an IRS notice sent to the old address can carry a deadline you never see.

Social Security Administration

If you get Social Security retirement, disability, or survivors benefits, or if you have Medicare, update your address through a free “my Social Security” account at ssa.gov. Selective Service

Auto Insurance

Your premium is tied to your ZIP code, and most policies require prompt notice of an address change. A new ZIP code can change your rate, and driving with an outdated address on your policy gives the insurer grounds to dispute a claim. Call your insurer the same week you update PennDOT.
