To renew your PA driver’s license, you have a six-month window before expiration to submit your renewal online, by mail, or in person, then visit any Photo License Center for a new picture. A standard four-year non-commercial renewal costs $39.50. Drivers 65 and older can choose a two-year cycle for $27.50 instead.1Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. When You Can Renew
The renewal window opens six months before your license expires.3Pennsylvania General Assembly. Pennsylvania Code Title 75 – Section 1514 If your license is already expired but by less than six months, you can still go through the normal renewal process. Past six months, you lose online eligibility. Past two years, PennDOT treats you as a new applicant and will require both the knowledge test and the road test before issuing a new license.4Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Before you start, make sure PennDOT has your current address. State law requires you to report an address change within 15 days of moving, and an outdated address will delay your camera card.5Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Three Ways to Renew
All three methods end the same way: at a Photo License Center for your new picture. What differs is how you handle the paperwork and payment.
Online
Online is the fastest option. Log in to PennDOT’s portal with your license number, date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security number, and pay by credit or debit card. You can immediately print a Temporary Internet Driver’s License, valid for 15 days, to carry while you wait.9Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Online Transactions and Payments FAQs
Online renewal isn’t available if you hold a commercial license, if your license has been expired for six months or more, if your PennDOT information is out of date, or if you have a “Valid without Photo” license.4Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Driver Licenses, Learners Permits, and ID Cards FAQs
By Mail
Fill out Form DL-143 and mail it with a check or money order payable to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to the address printed on the form. PennDOT will mail your camera card once the application is processed.
In Person
Any Driver License Center can process a renewal on the spot. In person is the right choice if you need to present original documents, such as when adding REAL ID for the first time or updating your legal name.
The Camera Card Step
After PennDOT processes your renewal, expect a camera card in the mail within 7 to 14 business days.10Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Staff take your picture there and issue the new license.4Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Driver Licenses, Learners Permits, and ID Cards FAQs Don’t sit on it. If the camera card itself expires before you go, you’ll face delays.
Should You Add REAL ID?
As of May 7, 2025, federal rules require a REAL ID-compliant license, a passport, or another accepted federal ID to board a domestic flight or enter certain federal facilities.11Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID For everyday driving, a standard Pennsylvania license is still fine.
You can add REAL ID at renewal or any time before. If PennDOT already verified your identity documents at a previous visit, you can order the REAL ID online. Otherwise, plan to visit a Driver License Center in person with proof of identity (a birth certificate or valid passport), your Social Security card, and two proofs of Pennsylvania residency such as utility bills, bank statements, or a lease.7Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Name Changes
If your legal name has changed, bring original certified documents to a Driver License Center. PennDOT accepts certified marriage certificates issued by a county court, court orders granting a name change, and adoption records. Photocopies aren’t accepted.12Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. For a REAL ID, every identity document must reflect your current legal name, and any gap needs a connecting document (marriage certificate, court order, or amended birth certificate) to link the old name to the new.13Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Changing Your Name on a REAL ID
Vision and Medical Requirements
Non-commercial drivers need corrected visual acuity of at least 20/70 and a horizontal field of vision of at least 120 degrees. If you fall below those thresholds, PennDOT requires Form DL-102 (Report of Eye Examination) from a licensed optometrist or ophthalmologist before renewing.14Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Report of Eye Examination DL-102
Pennsylvania law also requires physicians and other medical professionals to report patients aged 15 or older with conditions that could impair safe driving. If PennDOT receives such a report, it may require a medical or vision exam before your renewal is processed. A reportable condition doesn’t automatically disqualify you; PennDOT reviews each case and may impose restrictions instead of denying a license.15Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Military Members Stationed Out of State
Active-duty service members stationed outside Pennsylvania keep a valid license for the entire time they’re away, even past the printed expiration date. The same protection extends to a spouse and children. You have 45 days after returning or leaving the service to renew.16Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Carry your expired license along with documentation showing you’re stationed out of state. If your renewal comes due while you’re more than 60 days away, PennDOT can issue a “photoless license” by mail, so no Photo Center visit is needed.16Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Non-U.S. Citizens
Lawfully present non-U.S. citizens can renew, but must present valid federal immigration documentation: an unexpired Employment Authorization Card (Form I-766), a valid Permanent Resident Card, or an unexpired foreign passport with an attached U.S. visa and I-94 form. You’ll also need your original Social Security card, or an original SSA ineligibility letter if you don’t have a number, plus two proofs of Pennsylvania residency (for example, a utility bill, lease, or W-2). If you hold temporary immigration status, your license expiration will match the expiration on your immigration documents rather than following the standard four-year cycle.17Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Driving on an Expired License
Pennsylvania has no grace period. The day after your license expires, driving on it is a summary offense. A conviction carries a $200 fine, which drops to $25 if you can show you held a valid license before it expired and it’s been less than one year since expiration.2Pennsylvania General Assembly. Pennsylvania Code Title 75 – Section 1501
One useful detail: if you’re charged under this section and produce a valid Pennsylvania license at the issuing authority’s office within 15 days of the violation, the charge can be dismissed.2Pennsylvania General Assembly. Pennsylvania Code Title 75 – Section 1501 Renewing quickly after a stop can save you the fine, but it isn’t a plan. The longer you wait, the more you lose. Six months out, online renewal is off the table. Two years out, you’re taking the knowledge and road tests again.
