A Pennsylvania driver’s license renewal runs on a four-year cycle, expires the day after your birthday, and can be handled online, by mail, or at a Driver License Center. The standard fee is $39.50. You can renew any time within six months of your expiration date, and if you want a REAL ID at the same time, plan on an in-person visit and an extra $30.
When You Can Renew
Your non-commercial license expires at the end of the day after your birthday on a four-year cycle set by PennDOT.1Pennsylvania General Assembly. What It Costs
A standard four-year renewal is $39.50. Drivers 65 and older can choose a two-year license for $27.50 instead.3Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Online renewals take credit and debit cards. Mail renewals require a check or money order payable to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
How to Renew
Online
Online is the fastest option and works for most non-commercial drivers whose information hasn’t changed and whose license hasn’t been expired more than six months.2Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. PennDOT uses the most recent photo on file and mails the new card directly to you, so no photo center visit is needed.
By Mail
Complete Form DL-143 and mail it with your check or money order to the address printed on the form itself, usually in the upper left corner.5Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Driver and Vehicle Services – Contact Us Check that address before sending, since PennDOT updates it occasionally. Allow extra time for postal delivery and processing.
In Person
You can renew at any PennDOT Driver License Center. Going in person is required if you’re upgrading to a REAL ID, if you’re a non-U.S. citizen, or if you need to correct information on your license. Authorized third-party messenger services also accept renewals at various locations, though they typically charge their own processing fee on top of the state fee.
Filling Out Form DL-143
DL-143 is the renewal application PennDOT uses for all non-commercial licenses regardless of age. Drivers 65 and older use the same form but can request the two-year license option.6Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. The form asks for your driver’s license number, date of birth, and full Social Security number. The SSN is required on the application under state law, though it won’t appear on the license itself.7Pennsylvania General Assembly. Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes Title 75, Chapter 15 – Section 1510 You’ll sign the form certifying everything on it is accurate. PennDOT warns on the form that a false statement is a third-degree misdemeanor punishable by up to $2,500 in fines and up to one year in jail.6Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. The application also includes a voter registration section. You can register, update your address, or decline, and your decision is kept confidential.8Department of Justice. The National Voter Registration Act of 1993
Adding a REAL ID
Since May 7, 2025, you need a REAL ID-compliant license or another federally accepted document like a passport to board domestic commercial flights and enter certain federal buildings.9Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Apply for REAL ID Renewal is a natural time to upgrade, but a REAL ID requires an in-person visit and additional documents.
You’ll need to bring:
- One identity document, such as a U.S. birth certificate with a raised seal, a valid U.S. passport, a certificate of citizenship, or a certificate of naturalization.
- One Social Security document, such as your Social Security card, a W-2, an SSA-1099, or a pay stub showing your full SSN.
- Two proofs of Pennsylvania residency from different sources, such as a utility bill, lease, vehicle registration, or tax records.
All documents must be originals or certified copies. Photocopies aren’t accepted.10Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. REAL ID Document Requirements PennDOT’s online document checker lets you verify your specific documents before you go.
If you already use a passport for air travel, you can skip the extra paperwork and stick with the standard renewal. A standard Pennsylvania license still works for driving and most everyday identification. It just won’t get you through TSA or into federal facilities.
After You Submit
If you renewed online or by mail, PennDOT uses your existing photo to produce the new license and mails it to the address on file. No trip to a photo center is needed.
If a new photo is required, whether because you renewed in person, you’re getting your first REAL ID, or PennDOT doesn’t have a usable photo on file, you’ll receive a camera card in the mail within seven to ten business days after your application is processed.2Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. PennDOT can also issue a temporary credential valid for 15 days to cover the gap.11Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Temporary Drivers License FAQs One important limit: TSA does not accept temporary paper licenses at airport security checkpoints.12Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint If you’re flying during renewal, bring your passport or another federally accepted ID.
If You Let Your License Expire
Once your license lapses, you no longer hold a valid credential to drive on public roads. Within six months of expiration you can still use any of the standard renewal channels. Past six months, online renewal is off the table, and you’ll need to renew by mail or in person.
The bigger legal risk comes from driving on a suspended or revoked license rather than an expired one. Under Pennsylvania law, driving while suspended or revoked is a summary offense with a $200 fine for a first violation. If the suspension was tied to a DUI, the penalties climb: $500 and 60 days of imprisonment for a first offense, $1,000 and 90 days for a second, and $2,500 with at least six months for a third.13Pennsylvania General Assembly. Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes Title 75 – Section 1543 Even an ordinary expired license can bring a citation and insurance complications on a traffic stop. Setting a reminder six months out is the simplest way to avoid the whole problem.
Vision Screening
Pennsylvania requires drivers to meet minimum vision standards, and PennDOT may request a screening as part of renewal. For non-commercial drivers, the standard is a combined field of vision of at least 120 degrees in the horizontal meridian.14Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Report of Eye Examination, Form DL-102 If your record is flagged, an eye care provider needs to complete Form DL-102 and submit it. Drivers who need corrective lenses will have a restriction noted on the license.
Active Military Members
Pennsylvania gives service members stationed outside the state real flexibility. An active-duty member’s license stays valid for the full duration of out-of-state service plus 45 days after return or separation. If a renewal comes due during a deployment or an out-of-state assignment of more than 60 days, PennDOT can issue a photoless license so the member doesn’t have to travel home for a photo. Carry the expired license along with documentation of the out-of-state military service to rely on the extension.15Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Commercial Driver’s License Renewals
CDL renewals carry federal requirements a standard renewal doesn’t. You must self-certify your operating status into one of four categories based on whether you drive in interstate or intrastate commerce and whether your operations are excepted or non-excepted from medical certification.16Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Medical exam results are now transmitted electronically to state licensing agencies, so paper certificates may no longer need to be hand-delivered to PennDOT. Rollout has been uneven, and FMCSA has issued waivers allowing drivers to carry paper certificates as backup during the transition.17Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
