PA Turnpike Cost: 2026 Rates, E-ZPass Discount, and Toll By Plate

Driving the Pennsylvania Turnpike in 2026 costs a passenger car about $1.94 per typical segment with E-ZPass, or $3.88 without it, and $62.76 end to end from the Ohio border to New Jersey with E-ZPass compared to $125.52 with Toll By Plate.¹² The single biggest thing that changes what you pay is how you pay: E-ZPass costs half of Toll By Plate on every trip.³ The Pennsylvania Turnpike cost breakdown below covers 2026 rates, the discounts available, what happens if an invoice goes unpaid, and why the price keeps climbing every year.

What the 2026 Rates Actually Are

A 4% increase took effect January 4, 2026, the 18th consecutive annual hike but the smallest since 2014. On the mainline (I-76/I-276) and the Northeast Extension (I-476), tolls are distance-based. The per-mile rate is now $0.073, with a fixed $1.13 fee at each tolling gantry.³ Shorter spur extensions use flat pricing, with a 4% bump added to prior trip costs.

A few common trips for a passenger car:

Most common single-segment toll: $1.94 with E-ZPass, $3.88 with Toll By Plate.¹
Ohio border to New Jersey, full length (~360 miles): $62.76 E-ZPass, $125.52 Toll By Plate.²
Pittsburgh to Valley Forge (King of Prussia area): $54.89 with E-ZPass.²

Commercial vehicles pay considerably more. A Class-5 tractor trailer with six or more axles pays a most-common segment toll of $24.12 with E-ZPass or $48.24 with Toll By Plate, and a full-length trip runs $218.24 with E-ZPass.⁴

To price a specific trip, the Commission publishes an online toll calculator where you enter start interchange, end interchange, and vehicle type.⁵ Full interchange-to-interchange schedules are also available as PDFs.⁶

What Determines Your Toll

Three things: how far you drive, what you drive, and how you pay. The Turnpike classifies vehicles by axle count and height. Anything 7’6″ or shorter is “low profile”; taller vehicles are “high profile” and pay more per mile.² This axle-and-height model replaced older weight-based classification when Open Road Tolling launched in January 2025.⁷

Cash and in-lane credit card payments no longer exist. The Turnpike went fully cashless in 2020, so every driver either uses E-ZPass or gets a mailed invoice through Toll By Plate.⁷

How to Pay Less

E-ZPass Cuts Your Toll in Half

E-ZPass users pay 50% of what Toll By Plate users pay, on every trip, every time.³ About 86% of trips on the Turnpike already use it.⁷

Opening an account requires a minimum of $38. You can sign up online, through the PA Toll Pay app, by phone at 1-877-736-6727, by mail, or in person at the Customer Service Center in Harrisburg.⁸ You’ll need a driver’s license, license plate number, credit card, and email address. Transponders are also sold as “E-ZPass Go Paks” at participating Pennsylvania retailers.⁹ Up to four vehicles can share a single transponder.

The account runs on a prepaid balance. With auto-replenishment turned on, $35 is charged to the linked bank account or card whenever the balance drops to $10 or less, and that amount can increase for frequent travelers.⁹

Toll By Plate Autopay Saves 15%

If you don’t want a transponder, you can still get a 15% discount by setting up a Toll By Plate account with automatic payments through the PA Toll Pay app. The discount is applied automatically to monthly invoices. The account is limited to personal vehicles weighing 15,000 pounds or less, with up to four vehicles. Vehicles can’t already be linked to an E-ZPass account and can’t have outstanding unpaid tolls at the time of registration.¹⁰

The 15% still leaves you paying more than E-ZPass. For most drivers who use the Turnpike more than once or twice a year, the transponder pays for itself quickly.

What Happens If You Don’t Pay a Toll By Plate Invoice

When a vehicle without E-ZPass passes under a tolling gantry, cameras photograph the plate. The registered owner is mailed an invoice covering a 30-day billing cycle roughly 40 days after travel.¹⁰

Ignoring that invoice gets expensive fast:

At 30 days past due, a second invoice is issued with a late fee of $5 or 1.5% of the balance, whichever is higher.¹¹
At 60 days past due, the debt goes to a collection agency, which adds its own fee.¹¹
Under Act 112 of 2022, the Turnpike Commission can ask PennDOT to suspend the registration of any Pennsylvania vehicle with four or more unpaid invoices or $250 or more in outstanding tolls and fees. If you don’t pay within 42 days of a pending suspension letter, PennDOT places an indefinite suspension on the registration.¹²¹¹

Restoring a suspended registration means paying all outstanding tolls, all fees, and a PennDOT restoration fee. Driving on a suspended registration can carry criminal penalties.¹¹

Why the Cost Keeps Going Up

Every January for 18 years, the toll has gone up. The reason is one 2007 law. Act 44 required the Turnpike Commission to send $450 million a year to PennDOT for statewide roads, bridges, and transit systems that have nothing to do with the Turnpike. The plan assumed Pennsylvania would toll Interstate 80 to raise the money. The federal government rejected that, and the Commission borrowed to make the payments instead.¹³

Since 2007, the Commission has provided nearly $8 billion to the Commonwealth for transportation purposes, and its total debt has climbed to $16 billion, roughly half of it tied directly to Act 44.¹⁴¹³

The projected schedule is 3.5% in 2027 and 3% every year from 2028 through 2057.¹⁴ Smaller percentages, but they compound. Unless the legislature restructures the underlying debt, plan on the price of driving the Turnpike going up every January for roughly another three decades.
