A Pennsylvania change of address starts a 15-day clock with PennDOT for both your driver’s license and your vehicle registration, and the same move sets off separate deadlines with voter registration, the state Department of Revenue, the U.S. Postal Service, and a handful of federal agencies.1Pennsylvania General Assembly. Pennsylvania Code 75 – Notice of Change of Name or Address Handled in order, it’s a short afternoon of paperwork. Ignored, it can mean refund checks sent to the wrong house, trouble at your polling place, or a traffic stop where your license says you live somewhere you don’t.
Deadlines at a Glance
The clocks start the day you move, not the day you finish unpacking. The tightest ones belong to federal agencies most people forget about.

PennDOT no longer mails registration cards for online changes, so if you don’t print it, you don’t have it.4Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Moving Within PA
If you prefer paper, non-commercial drivers use Form DL-80, marking it as a change or correction and mailing it to the address on the form. There’s no fee for the address update and no notarization.5Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. If You’re Moving to Pennsylvania From Another State
This isn’t an address change. You’re applying for a new Pennsylvania license and registering your vehicle in the state for the first time. The deadline is 60 days from establishing residency for a non-commercial license and 30 days for a CDL.3Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Moving to Pennsylvania Expect to show proof of identity, your Social Security number, and two proofs of Pennsylvania residency. You’ll also need to title and register your vehicle in Pennsylvania during that window.
Voter Registration
Your voter registration address drives your polling place, so an old address can send you to the wrong location on election day. You can update online through the state’s voter services portal, by mail, or in person. On the paper application, check the box under question 3 to indicate an address change and send it to your county board of elections.7Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Update My Registration
The change must reach the county board at least 15 days before an election to take effect for that election.8Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Voter Registration Once it’s processed, a new voter registration card showing your assigned polling place arrives in the mail.
Pennsylvania Department of Revenue
For personal income tax, the easiest fix is to put your new address on your next PA return. If you’ve moved mid-year and don’t want to wait, create a myPATH account and update it there.
Business taxpayers use Form REV-1705R, the Tax Account Information Change/Correction Form. Paper submissions can take up to four months to process; the same change through myPATH takes effect immediately.9Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Tax Account Information Change/Correction Form (REV-1705R) Either way, don’t let a refund check or delinquency notice go to the old place.
USPS Mail Forwarding
None of the agency updates above forward the mail already in motion. A USPS change-of-address request fills that gap, forwarding first-class mail from your old address for 12 months, with paid extensions available after that.10United States Postal Service. Standard Forward Mail and Change of Address File online at usps.com/move for a $1.25 identity verification charge, or do it free in person at a post office with photo ID. Submit it about a week before you move so forwarding is live when mail starts arriving at the old address. Treat it as a safety net, not a replacement for notifying each agency directly.
Federal Agencies
Depending on your situation, a move triggers one or more of these federal updates.
- IRS. File Form 8822 to update your home mailing address, or just put the new address on your next return. Processing takes four to six weeks. There’s no strict deadline, but if the IRS can’t reach you, notices of deficiency and demands for tax are still considered sent, and penalties and interest keep running.11Internal Revenue Service. Form 8822 Change of Address
- Social Security Administration. If you receive benefits, update through your my Social Security account or by calling 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.12Social Security Administration. Update Contact Information
- USCIS. Non-citizens living in the United States must file Form AR-11 online within 10 days of moving. The requirement does not apply to A or G visa holders or visa waiver visitors. Most people can finish the whole sequence in a single sitting, and the 15-day PennDOT window gives you no reason to wait.
