The Peterborough NH tax rate for 2025 is $22.35 per $1,000 of assessed value. A home assessed at $300,000 therefore generates about $6,705 in annual property taxes. Because New Hampshire has no broad-based income or sales tax, property taxes carry an unusually heavy share of the public funding load here.1Lincoln Institute of Land Policy. Where Your $22.35 Goes
The total rate is built from four separate levies:2Town of Peterborough, NH. Assessing
- Local education: $10.77, funding Peterborough’s share of the ConVal Regional School District budget.
- Municipal: $9.50, covering police, fire, road maintenance, the library, and public works.
- State education: $1.11, a statewide levy to help meet New Hampshire’s constitutional obligation to fund an adequate education. For the 2026 tax year, the uniform state education tax rate is $1.030 per $1,000 of equalized valuation.3New Hampshire Department of Revenue Administration. Education Tax Warrant for Tax Year 2026
- County: $0.97, paying for Hillsborough County services, including corrections, the county attorney’s office, and the nursing home.
The two education portions together make up roughly 53 percent of the bill. That means votes at the school district meeting each March tend to move the rate more than anything decided at the municipal or county level.
When Bills Arrive and When They’re Due
Peterborough bills twice a year under RSA 76:15-a.4New Hampshire General Court. New Hampshire Code 76:15-a – Semi-Annual Collection of Taxes in Certain Towns and Cities The summer bill is mailed no later than June 15 and is due July 1. It’s an estimate โ half of the previous year’s total tax โ because the Department of Revenue Administration hasn’t finalized the current year’s rate yet.
The fall bill is mailed by late October and due December 1. It reflects the actual rate for the current year, minus whatever you paid in July. If spending increased or valuations shifted, this second bill can be noticeably larger than the first.
You can pay online through the town’s EB2Gov portal, which lets you look up your account by address, parcel number, or last name and view balance and payment history.5Town of Peterborough, NH. Tax Billing and Collection
If Your Mortgage Servicer Pays Through Escrow
Federal rules under Regulation X require your servicer to analyze the escrow account annually, project the upcoming year’s tax and insurance payments, and adjust your monthly payment accordingly. You’ll receive an annual escrow statement within 30 days of your computation year ending.6Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 1024.17 Escrow Accounts Because the December bill can jump when the DRA sets the final rate, escrow shortages are common in Peterborough. The servicer will spread any shortage over the following year’s payments, so watch for payment adjustment notices each winter.
What Happens If You Pay Late
Missing the December 1 deadline triggers 8 percent annual interest on the unpaid balance, running from December 1 forward. If your tax bill was mailed on or after November 2, interest doesn’t begin until 30 days after the bill was sent.7New Hampshire General Court. New Hampshire Code 76:13 – Interest
If the balance stays unpaid, the tax collector can execute a tax lien against the property. Under RSA 80:80, the owner then has a two-year redemption period to pay the delinquent taxes plus interest and costs. If the property isn’t redeemed in that window, the municipality can acquire it by tax deed and sell it at public auction or by sealed bids, with the governing body setting minimum bid amounts and sale terms.8New Hampshire General Court. New Hampshire Code 80:80 – Transfer of Tax Liens and Sale of Tax-Deeded Property Losing a home to tax deed is uncommon, but the two-year clock starts quietly. If you’re falling behind, call the tax collector’s office before a lien is recorded โ payment arrangements are much easier to negotiate at that stage.
Programs That Can Lower Your Bill
Peterborough has adopted several relief programs. None are automatic; each requires an application through the Assessing Department.
Elderly Exemption
Peterborough’s elderly exemption under RSA 72:39-a reduces assessed value based on age:9Town of Peterborough, NH. Elderly and Blind Exemptions
- Ages 65 through 74: $100,000 off assessed value.
- Ages 75 through 79: $150,000 off assessed value.
- Age 80 and older: $200,000 off assessed value.
Income cannot exceed $34,000 if single or $52,000 if married, including Social Security. Net assets, excluding the home up to the minimum lot size, must be under $100,000. At the current rate, the exemption for someone 80 or older cuts about $4,470 from the annual tax bill.
Veterans Tax Credit
New Hampshire’s standard veterans tax credit is $50 for qualifying veterans, their spouses, or surviving spouses. Towns can vote to adopt an optional credit of up to $750 in place of the standard amount.10New Hampshire General Court. New Hampshire Code 72:28 – Veterans Tax Credit Eligibility generally requires at least 90 days of active service in a qualifying war or armed conflict, with an honorable discharge or continued service. Veterans with a service-connected disability and surviving spouses of those who died from service-connected causes also qualify. Confirm the current amount with the Assessing Department.
Blind Exemption
Residents who are legally blind can receive a $15,000 reduction in assessed value under RSA 72:37.9Town of Peterborough, NH. Elderly and Blind Exemptions
If Your Assessment Looks Too High
Your tax bill is the rate multiplied by your assessed value, so if the valuation is wrong, the bill is wrong. New Hampshire provides a formal abatement process with firm deadlines.
Under RSA 76:16, you must file a written abatement application with the selectmen by March 1 following the date your tax notice was mailed.11New Hampshire General Court. New Hampshire Code 76:16 – Abatement The application form is prescribed by the Board of Tax and Land Appeals and requires specific reasons supporting the request, along with comparable properties where applicable. The municipality must respond in writing by July 1. No response counts as a denial.
The strongest applications include recent sale prices of comparable Peterborough properties that suggest your assessment is out of line. Parcel data is publicly searchable through Vision Government Solutions, which Peterborough contracts with for valuation work.12Vision Government Solutions. Peterborough, NH A private appraisal strengthens the case but isn’t required at the municipal level.
If the selectmen deny the abatement, you can appeal to either the New Hampshire Board of Tax and Land Appeals or the Hillsborough County Superior Court.13New Hampshire Department of Revenue Administration. Property Tax Abatement and Appeal Process The BTLA route is less formal and doesn’t require an attorney, which makes it the more common choice for homeowners. If an abatement is granted after you’ve paid the full tax, the town must refund the overpayment with interest.
Claiming Peterborough Taxes on Your Federal Return
Peterborough property taxes are deductible on your federal income tax return as part of the state and local tax deduction under 26 U.S.C. ยง 164, but only if you itemize. For the 2026 tax year, the SALT deduction is capped at $40,400 for most filers, or $20,200 if married filing separately.14Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 164 – Taxes That cap covers property taxes, state income taxes, and sales taxes combined. Because New Hampshire doesn’t impose a broad-based income or sales tax, most Peterborough homeowners can apply more of that cap to their property taxes than homeowners in states where income taxes consume the limit first.
The deduction only helps if your total itemized deductions exceed the standard deduction. For homeowners with modest mortgages and Peterborough tax bills in the $5,000 to $8,000 range, the standard deduction may still come out ahead. Run the numbers both ways before assuming you’ll benefit.
