When You Can Renew
Florida issues standard Class E licenses on an eight-year cycle for drivers under 80, and a six-year cycle for drivers 80 and older.4Online Sunshine. Florida Statutes 322.18 – Expiration of Licenses; Sinusoidal Renewal The state mails a renewal notice to your address on file at least 30 days before your birthday.
You can renew up to 18 months before the expiration date printed on your card.2Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Military and Veterans Information On the back end, if your license has already expired, you have a 12-month grace period during which you can renew without starting over. You’ll owe a $15 delinquent fee and may need to pass a written exam, but you won’t have to retake the road test.3Online Sunshine. Florida Statutes 322.21 – License Fees After 12 months, the state treats you as a new applicant and the full battery of tests and documents applies again.
How to Renew
Online
The fastest option is the MyDMV Portal at mydmvportal.flhsmv.gov. The portal will tell you immediately whether you qualify. You won’t be eligible if you need a vision test that hasn’t been submitted, if you’re upgrading to a REAL ID for the first time, or if the system otherwise flags your record for an in-person visit. Online renewals carry a separate $2.00 non-refundable convenience fee.5Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. MyDMV Portal

Pinellas County Locations A straight renewal with no testing is usually manageable as a walk-in, but scheduling an appointment through the Pinellas County Tax Collector website saves time during busy periods.
By Mail
Mail renewal is only available if your renewal notice specifically states you’re eligible. If it does, send the completed form to the Division of Motorist Services at 2900 Apalachee Parkway, MS92, Tallahassee, FL 32399. You can’t request this option on your own; the system has to pre-clear you.
What It Costs
The state sets the base fees, and every in-person transaction at a Pinellas County Tax Collector office includes an additional $6.25 service fee:
- Class E license renewal: $48.00 base + $6.25 service = $54.25
- Commercial driver license renewal: $75.00 base + $6.25 service = $81.25
- Delinquent renewal (expired license): add $15.00 to the amounts above
Veterans are exempt from the $6.25 service fee with proof of honorable or general discharge, such as a DD-214.1Pinellas County Tax Collector. Driver License Fees The offices accept cash, checks, and major credit or debit cards. Card payments typically add a small convenience fee.
What to Bring
A straight renewal where you already hold a REAL ID (the gold star in the upper corner of your card) does not require you to produce every document again. Anyone whose current license lacks the star, or who is upgrading for the first time, needs the full set below.
Proof of Identity
One primary document proving who you are. Florida accepts a certified U.S. birth certificate, a valid U.S. passport or passport card, a naturalization certificate, or a permanent resident card, among other options.7Florida Senate. Florida Code 322.08 – Application for License; Requirements for License and Identification Card Forms If your current name differs from the name on that document because of marriage or a court order, bring the government-issued marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order that links the two names.
Proof of Social Security Number
A Social Security card is the most straightforward option; a military ID card also works.7Florida Senate. Florida Code 322.08 – Application for License; Requirements for License and Identification Card Forms The FLHSMV accepts certain other documents as well; check its “What to Bring” page for the full list before your visit.
Proof of Residential Address
Two separate documents showing your Pinellas County residential address. Accepted documents include a utility bill, lease agreement, Florida vehicle registration, mortgage statement, voter registration card, bank statement, or insurance policy. Anything dated, like a utility bill or bank statement, must be from within the last 60 days. If you don’t have documents in your own name, a person you live with can complete a Certification of Address form and provide their own two address documents. That person must either come to the office with you or sign the form before a notary.8Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. U.S. Citizen – What to Bring
After You Renew
You’ll receive a temporary paper permit that lets you drive legally while your permanent card is produced. The hard-copy license typically arrives by mail within 7 to 10 business days. If it hasn’t come after that window, check with your mail carrier first; the FLHSMV can’t issue a replacement until 30 days have passed from the original order.
One catch worth planning around: the temporary paper permit is not accepted at TSA airport checkpoints.9Transportation Security Administration. TSA Introduces New $45 Fee Option for Travelers Without REAL ID Starting February 1 If you have air travel within the next two weeks, renew early enough to receive your card first, or carry a valid U.S. passport as backup. Federal REAL ID enforcement has been in full effect since May 7, 2025: a Florida license without the gold star cannot be used to board a domestic flight or enter a federal facility.10Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID Renewal is the natural moment to upgrade, since you’re already at the office or on the portal.
If Your License Has Already Expired
Driving with a license that has been expired six months or less is a traffic infraction in Florida.11Online Sunshine. Florida Statutes 322.065 – Driver License Expired for 6 Months or Less; Penalties A citation also creates a record your auto insurer can see, and insurers routinely treat the violation as grounds to raise rates at renewal. Once your license has been expired more than six months, you’re effectively treated as an unlicensed driver, which is a more serious offense under Florida law. The $15 delinquent fee is minor compared to a traffic ticket plus a rate hike, so renewing promptly inside the 12-month grace period is the cheapest path forward.3Online Sunshine. Florida Statutes 322.21 – License Fees
Drivers 80 and Older
Beyond the shorter six-year cycle, drivers 80 and older must pass a vision test at every renewal. You can take the test at no charge at any driver license office, or have a Florida-licensed physician or optometrist administer it and submit the results electronically.12Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Driver License Renewal Requirements/Options for Older Drivers To renew online, the doctor’s results must be submitted electronically to the FLHSMV before you can finish the transaction.4Online Sunshine. Florida Statutes 322.18 – Expiration of Licenses; Sinusoidal Renewal
Military Members
Active-duty service members stationed outside Florida have two options. You can renew online through the MyDMV Portal from anywhere. If you’re not eligible online, the FLHSMV can issue a military extension card that keeps your driving privilege valid continuously until 90 days after you’re discharged, you return to Florida, or you obtain a license from another state.2Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Military and Veterans Information To get the extension, complete the Military Personnel and Dependents Affidavit (HSMV form 73641) and include a copy of your current orders. If you already know your license will expire during a deployment, the 18-month early renewal window exists for exactly this situation.
Commercial Driver License Renewals
CDL holders follow the same general process but face an additional federal requirement: you must have a current medical examiner certificate on file with the FLHSMV before the department will process your renewal. If your certificate has lapsed, your CDL renewal will be denied, and failing to maintain a valid certificate can result in CDL disqualification.13Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. CDL Medical Information Medical certificates are typically valid for up to 24 months, so check the certificate’s expiration date well before your license renewal comes due. The CDL renewal base fee is $75 plus the $6.25 Pinellas County service fee.1Pinellas County Tax Collector. Driver License Fees
