Pistol Training in Colorado: Course Hours, Exam, and Renewal

Pistol training in Colorado changed significantly on July 1, 2025. To qualify for a concealed handgun permit, you now need an in-person class of at least eight hours, taught by an instructor your county sheriff has verified, that includes both a live-fire exercise and a written exam.1Colorado General Assembly. HB24-1174 Concealed Carry Permits and Training The certificate the instructor issues is good for one year, so when you train and when you apply have to line up.

The Eight-Hour Course and What It Covers

Colorado spells out the curriculum in C.R.S. ยง 18-12-202.5, and your instructor has to cover every item on the list:

  • Safe handling of firearms and ammunition, including loading and unloading a pistol
  • Safe storage methods and your obligations under Colorado’s secure firearms storage law
  • Shooting fundamentals: grip, stance, sight alignment, and trigger control
  • Federal and Colorado firearms laws on purchasing, owning, transporting, and possessing firearms, including extreme risk protection orders, requirements for reporting lost or stolen guns, and any firearms law enacted within the previous five years
  • When Colorado law permits the use of deadly force in self-defense and when it does not
  • How to interact with law enforcement during an emergency where you are armed
  • Avoiding criminal attacks, managing violent confrontations, and recognizing when lethal force is appropriate2FindLaw. Colorado Code 18-12-202.5 – Concealed Handgun Training Class and Refresher Class Standards

The five-year lookback on recent firearms legislation matters. If an instructor is still teaching from a slide deck built before 2021, the class content is out of date and the certificate may not satisfy the sheriff’s office.

Live-Fire and Written Exam Standards

The live-fire portion requires you to discharge at least fifty rounds and reach a minimum seventy percent accuracy score, as determined by the instructor. The exercise can be split across more than one day if you need extra range time.2FindLaw. Colorado Code 18-12-202.5 – Concealed Handgun Training Class and Refresher Class Standards Seventy percent is a floor, not a goal. If you are close to that line in practice, book range sessions before your class date rather than hoping it comes together on test day.

The written exam is open-book and requires at least eighty percent to pass.2FindLaw. Colorado Code 18-12-202.5 – Concealed Handgun Training Class and Refresher Class Standards The open-book format can be misleading. Eighty percent on questions about self-defense law, storage rules, and recent legislation still requires that you pay attention during the classroom hours.

The One-Year Certificate Window

This is the trap most people fall into. Before July 2025, a Colorado training certificate was valid for up to ten years. Under current law, your initial training has to be completed within the one year before you file your permit application.3Justia Law. Colorado Code 18-12-203 – Criteria for Obtaining a Permit A class you took fourteen months ago is already expired for permit purposes.

Build in margin. The sheriff has up to ninety days to act on a complete application.4Justia Law. Colorado Code 18-12-206 – Sheriff Issuance or Denial of Permits Filing nine months after your class leaves plenty of room. Filing eleven months in cuts it close.

When you pass, the instructor issues a signed certificate with their printed name and original signature.3Justia Law. Colorado Code 18-12-203 – Criteria for Obtaining a Permit The sheriff’s office wants that original with the wet signature. Keep a copy for yourself.

Picking a Legitimate Class

Not every advertised Colorado concealed carry course meets the current standard. Two filters cut most of the noise.

First, the instructor has to appear on your county sheriff’s verified instructor list. HB 24-1174 replaced the old system, where any nationally certified instructor could teach the course independently, with a sheriff-verification requirement.1Colorado General Assembly. HB24-1174 Concealed Carry Permits and Training A verified instructor must hold a valid Colorado concealed carry permit and be certified by a law enforcement agency, a college, or a nationally recognized firearms training organization. Verification lasts up to ten years, but the underlying certification has to stay current. Confirm the instructor is on your county’s list before you pay.

Second, the class cannot be online. Colorado law excludes any course completed entirely over the internet, on an electronic device, or at any location other than where the instructor physically holds the class.5Justia Law. Colorado Code 18-12-202 – Definitions A fully online Colorado concealed carry certificate is a certificate the sheriff will reject.

What to Bring on Class Day

Most instructors ask for a valid Colorado driver’s license or state-issued ID to confirm your identity and age, along with completed registration forms and a signed liability waiver. Check the instructor’s website before you show up.

For the range portion, plan to bring at least fifty rounds of factory-new ammunition in the correct caliber for your handgun. Many instructors require factory ammunition rather than reloads to limit malfunctions. You will need ballistic-rated eye protection and hearing protection, either electronic earmuffs or foam plugs. Some facilities loan firearms and safety gear. Do not assume yours will; ask ahead.

The eight-hour minimum is a full day. Bring water and food, dress for both a classroom and an outdoor range, and wear comfortable closed-toe shoes. Standing on concrete during an extended shooting session wears on your feet faster than people expect.

Military Service as an Alternative

Active-duty service members and veterans have a separate path. You can satisfy the handgun competency requirement by showing evidence of honorable discharge from the U.S. armed forces within the ten years before your application, or proof of successful completion of a military handgun qualification course within that same ten-year window.6La Plata County Colorado. HB 24-1174 Concealed Handgun Permit Act The ten-year window is specific to military qualifications. Civilian training certificates still have to be within one year.

Active-duty members stationed at a Colorado military installation on permanent duty orders are treated as Colorado residents for permit purposes, and that status extends to immediate family living in the state.3Justia Law. Colorado Code 18-12-203 – Criteria for Obtaining a Permit

Refresher Training for Renewal

Training does not end with the first permit. For renewal, you can apply starting one hundred twenty days before your permit expires.7Justia Law. Colorado Code 18-12-211 – Renewal of Permits The most common training option is a refresher class completed within six months before you file. Refresher courses are shorter than the initial class, requiring at least two hours of instruction, and they still include a live-fire exercise and a written exam.1Colorado General Assembly. HB24-1174 Concealed Carry Permits and Training

Other qualifying evidence can substitute for the refresher: current military service, current certification as a peace officer, active participation in organized shooting competitions, or being a verified instructor yourself.7Justia Law. Colorado Code 18-12-211 – Renewal of Permits

Watch the lapse rules. There is a six-month grace period after your permit expires, with a fifteen-dollar late fee on top of the renewal fee. Let it sit for six months or longer and the permit is gone for good, which puts you back at a new application and a full eight-hour initial course.7Justia Law.
