Prattville Sales Tax: 9.5% Rate, Holidays, and Filing

The Prattville sales tax rate is 9.5% on most retail purchases, and it’s the same whether the store sits on the Autauga County side of the city or the Elmore County side.1City of Prattville. How the 9.5% Rate Is Built

Alabama charges a 4% state sales tax on most retail sales of tangible personal property.2Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 40-23-2 – Tax Levied on Gross Receipts Prattville adds a 3.5% municipal tax.1City of Prattville. City of Prattville Finance Department – City Tax The county piece is where the two sides of town differ:

  • Autauga County side: 4% state + 2% county + 3.5% city = 9.5%
  • Elmore County side: 4% state + 1% county + 3.5% city + 1% district tax = 9.5%

Elmore County’s own rate is only 1%, but a 1% district tax brings the Elmore side to the same total.1City of Prattville. Reduced Rates on Certain Purchases

Not every purchase is taxed at the full state rate. Alabama taxes farm machinery, harvesting equipment, parts used in agricultural production, and manufacturing machinery at a reduced state rate of 1.5% instead of 4%.3Alabama Department of Revenue. Guidelines Regarding Agricultural Related Sales Local city and county taxes still apply on top of that reduced state portion, so the total isn’t 1.5%, but the savings on large equipment purchases add up.

Prattville also charges a lower city rate of 1% on automotive rentals and leases, compared with the standard 3.5% on general merchandise.1City of Prattville. City of Prattville Finance Department – City Tax That reduced rate covers leasing or renting vehicles, not buying one outright.

Groceries

Alabama has been phasing down its state sales tax on groceries. Act 2023-554 cut the state rate on SNAP-eligible food from 4% to 3% in September 2023, with a further reduction to 2% tied to growth in the state Education Trust Fund.4Alabama Department of Revenue. Notice – State Sales and Use Tax Rate Reduced on Food Beginning September 1, 2023 That second step took effect, so the state grocery rate is now 2%.5Alabama Department of Revenue. For a short window in 2026, the state portion drops further. Under Act 2026-604, state sales tax on qualifying groceries goes to zero from May 1 through June 30, 2026. Qualifying items follow federal SNAP guidelines and include produce, meat, dairy, and other foods for home consumption. Alcohol, tobacco, and hot prepared foods are not covered. Prattville’s 3.5% city tax and the applicable county tax still apply during the suspension, so groceries aren’t completely tax-free, but the state slice goes away.
