What You Owe on Your Home
Virginia law requires every locality to assess real estate at 100% of fair market value.2Virginia Code Commission. Virginia Code Title 58.1 Chapter 32 Article 1 – Taxable Real Estate The county reassesses every parcel each year, and the value on your January 1 notice is what drives that year’s bill.
The Board of County Supervisors sets the rate during the annual budget process. For FY2026, the base is $0.906 per $100 of assessed value.3Prince William County Government. Your Tax Dollars At Work Two countywide levies apply to most properties on top of that base:
- Fire and rescue levy: $0.0720 per $100
- Mosquito and forest pest management: $0.0025 per $100
Combined, those add up to roughly $0.9805 per $100.4Prince William County Government. Vehicle (Personal Property) Tax
Virginia lets counties tax tangible personal property like cars, trucks, trailers, motorcycles, and motor homes separately from real estate.5Virginia Code Commission. Virginia Code 58.1-3500 – Defined and Segregated for Local Taxation Prince William County taxes those vehicles at $3.50 per $100 of assessed value, nearly four times the real estate rate.4Prince William County Government. Personal Property Tax Relief
Virginia’s Personal Property Tax Relief Act reduces what qualifying passenger vehicles owe. The state puts a fixed amount of money into the program each year, and the county turns that into a percentage reduction on the first $20,000 of value.7Virginia Code Commission. Virginia Code 58.1-3524 – Tangible Personal Property Tax Relief For 2025 in Prince William County:
- Vehicles assessed at $1,000 or less: 100% relief, so you owe nothing
- Vehicles assessed between $1,001 and $20,000: 37% relief
- Vehicles assessed above $20,000: 37% relief on the first $20,000 of value only
The reduction appears as a credit on the bill, and you pay the balance.4Prince William County Government. The relief percentage can shift year to year because the state pool is capped while the number of qualifying vehicles changes.

Taxpayer Portal Online payments go through that portal by e-check or credit card; posting takes about two business days, so save the confirmation. Mailed checks go to the lockbox address on the payment voucher. The county also runs secure drop boxes and in-person kiosks at government centers. If you’re paying several accounts with one check, write each account number clearly or include every voucher. A payment credited to the wrong account can still trigger a late penalty on the one that got missed.
What Happens If You Pay Late
There’s no grace period. The day after a due date, a 10% penalty is added to any unpaid balance. Interest at 10% per year begins on the first day of the following month and keeps running until the account is paid in full.10Prince William County Government. Tax Enforcement – Delinquent Tax Collections On a $5,000 bill, that’s an immediate $500 penalty plus about $42 a month in interest.
Virginia law caps the initial penalty at 10% for real estate and allows up to 25% for personal property that stays unpaid more than 30 days past due. The county can also add up to 20% in collection agency or attorney fees to a delinquent account.11Virginia Code Commission. Virginia Code 58.1-3916 Real estate taxes that remain unpaid past December 31 of the second year after the due date can lead to a judicial sale of the property, though the owner can stop the sale any time before auction by paying the full amount owed, including penalties, interest, and fees.12Virginia Code Commission. Relief for Seniors and Disabled Residents
Prince William County offers an exemption or deferral of real estate tax for homeowners who are at least 65 or who are permanently and totally disabled.13Virginia Code Commission. Virginia Code 58.1-3210 – Exemption or Deferral of Taxes on Property of Certain Elderly Individuals and Individuals With Disabilities You must own and live in the home as your primary residence, and the household must fall under both financial limits:
- Gross household income no higher than $123,903. The first $10,000 of income from a relative in the home other than the owner or spouse is excluded, and disabled applicants can also exclude the first $7,500 of disability compensation.
- Combined net worth of the applicant and spouse no higher than $400,000, not counting the home and up to 25 acres it sits on.

If You Think Your Assessment Is Wrong
There are two ways to challenge a real estate assessment. The informal path is to contact the Real Estate Assessments Office with evidence like a recent appraisal or comparable sales.16Prince William County Government. Real Property Assessments Appeal The formal path goes to the Board of Equalization, a panel of eight county taxpayers who review disputes independently. Filing is free and you don’t need a lawyer. The deadline for 2026 assessment appeals is July 1, 2026.17Prince William County Government. Real Estate Tax, Appeals and Assessments
Virginia law presumes the assessor’s value is correct, so the evidence has to come from you. Strong comparable sales, honest condition documentation, and a recent fee appraisal from a licensed appraiser carry the most weight.
Vehicle owners can also challenge a personal property assessment if the J.D. Power value doesn’t match the vehicle’s actual condition, through a separate process at the Department of Tax Administration.18Prince William County Government. Vehicle Assessment Appeal on Personal Property Tax
Deducting These Taxes Federally
Both the real estate tax and the vehicle tax are deductible on a federal return if you itemize. The IRS requires that a personal property tax be based on the item’s value and charged yearly, which the county’s vehicle tax meets.19Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 503, Deductible Taxes For 2026, federal law caps the combined deduction for state income, local property, and sales taxes at $40,400 for most filers and $20,200 for married filing separately. Property taxes count in the year you actually pay them, so a late-December payment and an early-January one land on different returns.
