Proof of Residency in Tennessee: Accepted Documents and Exemptions

Proof of residency in Tennessee means bringing two separate documents to a Driver Services Center, each showing your name and your current Tennessee street address. Most must be dated within the past four months.¹ Get the pairing right and the visit is quick; get it wrong and you go home and come back.

Documents Tennessee Accepts

You need two documents from the approved list. Each must display your name (or your spouse’s, parent’s, or legal guardian’s) along with the Tennessee address you’re claiming.² Unless a specific document says otherwise, it has to be dated within the past four months.¹

Utility bills for landline phone, electric, water, gas, or cable service.
A current bank statement. Checks and checkbook covers don’t count.
A current pay stub, work ID, or employee badge showing your residential address.
An IRS W-2 form issued within the past 12 months. If you also submit a pay stub or work ID from the same employer, only one of the two counts toward your two documents.
An unexpired automobile, life, or health insurance policy. Wallet-sized insurance cards are not accepted.
A mortgage contract, receipt, or deed of sale for property at your Tennessee address.
An unexpired Tennessee vehicle registration or Tennessee title. You can use one but not both toward the two-document requirement.
A Tennessee voter registration card.
A receipt for personal property taxes paid within the past year.
For students, a photo student ID paired with campus residency documentation from a Tennessee institution.²
An unexpired Tennessee driver license belonging to your parent, legal guardian, or spouse.¹

Bring originals or certified copies. Photos and photocopies won’t be accepted, and the agent at the center reviews names, addresses, and dates on every document.³

Rental Leases Have Extra Requirements

A signed rental lease counts as only one of your two documents, and it comes with conditions people frequently miss. The lease alone isn’t enough. You also need a signed letter from your landlord dated within the last 30 days confirming the lease is still current and in effect. That letter has to be typed (handwritten letters are rejected) and must either appear on the landlord’s official letterhead or carry a notarized landlord signature.³

The lease itself must include your name, the rental address, the terms (rent amount and effective dates), and signatures from both you and the landlord. Miss any one of those and the lease will not be accepted.¹ Because of the paperwork involved, most renters find it simpler to pair the lease with a utility bill or bank statement rather than trying to assemble a full lease package for both slots.

When Nothing Is in Your Name

Adult children living with parents, spouses whose bills are in the other spouse’s name, and anyone sharing a household without their own paper trail can still prove residency. Your two documents may show the name of your spouse, parent, or legal guardian instead of your own, as long as the Tennessee address is correct.¹ A utility bill in your mother’s name at the address where you live, paired with her unexpired Tennessee driver license, is a valid combination.

Tennessee also has an affidavit (form SF-1631) for people who are homeless or living in a shelter. It functions as a secondary proof of residency document and is available at Driver Services Centers.

REAL ID Uses the Same List

Federal REAL ID enforcement began on May 7, 2025. Without a REAL ID-compliant license or another acceptable federal ID like a passport, you can’t board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities.⁴ The residency documents Tennessee accepts for a REAL ID are the same list used for standard licenses and IDs, and the same four-month freshness rule, landlord-letter requirement, and one-document-per-employer rule all still apply.⁵ REAL ID applications have to be made in person; federal law doesn’t permit online or mail applications for it.

Who Needs to Prove Residency, and When

Tennessee law treats you as a resident once you’ve lived in the state for more than 30 days, taken a job here, qualified as a registered voter, or taken steps to make Tennessee your primary home.⁶ Owning property isn’t required. Renting an apartment, accepting a job, or enrolling your children in school can each establish residency on its own.

Once you’ve crossed that line, if you hold a valid out-of-state license you have 30 days to visit a Driver Services Center and obtain a Tennessee license.³ That’s the visit at which the two-document proof requirement kicks in.

Military Members Are Exempt

Active-duty military members stationed in Tennessee who hold a valid driver license from another state don’t have to obtain a Tennessee license, and their family members are similarly exempt. That means military personnel stationed here aren’t required to produce Tennessee residency documents unless they choose to make Tennessee their permanent home state.⁷
