A Providence overnight parking permit lets you leave your car on a city street between 2:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., hours when parking is otherwise banned citywide. The permit costs $100 a year if your vehicle is registered in Providence and $200 a year if it is registered elsewhere, and it only works on designated streets inside the residential district where you live.1City of Providence. Why You Need One
Providence prohibits street parking between 2:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. every night of the week, across every neighborhood. A vehicle left out during those hours without a valid permit draws a citation of about $40, and repeat violations can lead to towing. The permit is the only way to park on the street overnight if you do not have a driveway or off-street spot.
Cost and Who Qualifies
You do not need to have your car registered in Providence to apply, but registration location sets the price: $100 per year for Providence-registered vehicles and $200 per year for vehicles registered outside the city. Vehicles over 6,500 pounds do not qualify, which rules out most commercial trucks.1City of Providence. City of Providence Overnight Parking
Any unpaid parking tickets, speeding tickets, speed camera tickets, or red-light camera tickets tied to the vehicle’s registration must be cleared before a permit will be issued.2City of Providence. Overnight Residential Parking Program1City of Providence. City of Providence Overnight Parking
How to Apply
Apply online through the city’s portal at providenceri.viewpointcloud.com or in person at the Traffic Engineering office in City Hall.1City of Providence. City of Providence Overnight Parking You upload your registration and proof of residency, give a working email address, and pay the fee at submission. The email matters for two things: approval confirmation, and winter snow emergency alerts.
Enforcement is based on your license plate, not a sticker or hang tag. Once you are approved, overnight patrols check your plate number against the permit list. If you get a new plate, buy a different car, or swap vehicles, update your plate on the permit right away. Parking with an outdated plate on file is treated the same as having no permit at all.2City of Providence. Overnight Residential Parking Program
Where the Permit Actually Works
The permit does not cover every street in Providence. You can only park on permitted streets within your own district.3City of Providence. Side-of-street rules apply inside your district too. Streets shown in yellow on the city’s district map allow overnight parking on one side only. On streets with no signage prohibiting either side, park on the side without utility poles.3City of Providence. Instructions for Resident Overnight Parking Permit Holders Picking the wrong side still earns a ticket, so check the map before you settle in for the night.
Guest Passes
If you hold a resident permit, you can buy a guest pass for $25 per year that lets a visitor’s vehicle park overnight up to five nights per month. Only existing permit holders can obtain one; a visitor cannot apply on their own.1City of Providence. City of Providence Overnight Parking You register the visitor’s plate when you request the pass, and the system tracks nightly use. Five nights per month is a hard cap, so longer stays need off-street parking.
Snow Emergencies Suspend Your Permit
When Providence declares a snow emergency, every overnight permit is suspended and every vehicle must come off city streets, no exceptions. Cars left out during a declared emergency get ticketed and towed.4City of Providence. Snow Parking in Providence The city pushes alerts through CodeRED, so sign up when your permit is approved.
Residents without driveways can move to one of sixteen approved snow parking locations across the city, which include lots at India Point Park, Prete-Metcalf Fields, Neutaconkanut Park, the Roger Williams Park Botanic Garden, and the Roger Williams Park Casino, along with on-street stretches on Blackstone Boulevard and streets bordering several other parks. Spots are first come, first serve, and fire hydrant and fire station restrictions still apply. Once the ban lifts, you have eight hours to move your car back to your district street before ticketing and towing resume at the snow lots.4City of Providence. Snow Parking in Providence
If You Get a Ticket
Overnight citations run roughly $40 after fees, but the bigger risk is accumulation. Three or more unpaid tickets on a vehicle put it on the city’s boot list, which means an immobilization device can be placed on your car wherever it is parked.5City of Providence. Parking Ticket Payments Unpaid tickets also block any new permit application, so clearing them is the first step if your renewal gets rejected. Contesting a ticket requires appearing in person at Providence Municipal Court; there is no online appeal.6City of Providence. Contesting a Violation
