What You Can Do at This Office

The Rantoul facility handles first-time driver’s licenses, renewals, duplicates, and corrections, along with instruction permits, REAL ID driver’s licenses, REAL ID state ID cards, and Temporary Visitor Driver’s Licenses. Vision screenings and written knowledge tests are given on site.1Illinois Secretary of State. Illinois Secretary of State Facility – Rantoul

On the vehicle side, you can process title transfers, new registrations, registration renewals, duplicate or corrected titles, and title-only transactions. The office issues passenger, motorcycle, B-truck, C-truck, RV and trailer, and semi-trailer plates, along with renewal stickers, specialty plates, transfers, and sticker replacements. Temporary registration permits and 7-day and 90-day drive-away permits are available here as well.1Illinois Secretary of State. Illinois Secretary of State Facility – Rantoul

The office also takes reinstatement fee payments for suspended or revoked licenses, prints driver record abstracts, registers voters, enrolls organ donors, and accepts temporary disability parking placard applications. Permanent disability placards are not processed here. Those applications go to the Springfield Flagship Center or by mail to the Persons with Disabilities Placard Unit in Springfield.2Illinois Secretary of State. CDL Services and Limits

Rantoul handles first-time CDL issuance, renewals, duplicates, written tests, and vision screenings. CDL road tests at this location are limited to Class B and Class C and require an appointment. A Class A road test will send you to a different facility.1Illinois Secretary of State. Illinois Secretary of State Facility – Rantoul

Federal Entry-Level Driver Training rules apply before you can test for a first-time Class A or Class B CDL, an upgrade from Class B to Class A, or passenger, school bus, or hazardous materials endorsements. Your training provider submits the completion record electronically to the FMCSA, and the Rantoul office cannot accept paper proof. The skills exam cannot be scheduled until that record posts to your driving record.3Illinois Secretary of State. Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT)

Road Tests

Non-CDL and motorcycle road tests are available without an appointment, generally until roughly 60 minutes before closing, though a busy day can move that cutoff earlier. Bring your vehicle insurance card. Tests are not conducted after dark or when weather or road conditions are unsafe.1Illinois Secretary of State. Illinois Secretary of State Facility – Rantoul

Documents to Bring

Illinois sorts identity documents into four groups. For a standard driver’s license or state ID, bring one document from each group. For a REAL ID, bring one from Groups A, B, and C plus two from Group D.4Illinois Secretary of State. Document Requirements to Obtain a Driver’s License/State ID Card

  • Group A, written signature: a credit card, canceled check, or current Illinois driver’s license.
  • Group B, date of birth: a certified birth certificate, valid U.S. passport, or consular report of birth abroad.
  • Group C, Social Security number: a Social Security card, W-2, or pay stub showing the full SSN.
  • Group D, Illinois residency: a utility bill, bank statement, mortgage document, or other official mail with your address.

Names and addresses must match across documents. A mismatch between your birth certificate name and your current legal name will stop the application, so bring the connecting document, such as a marriage certificate or court order, if your name has changed. The complete acceptable-document list is in checklist DSD X 173.4Illinois Secretary of State. Document Requirements to Obtain a Driver’s License/State ID Card

REAL ID and Air Travel

Federal REAL ID enforcement took effect May 7, 2025. To board a domestic flight or enter certain federal buildings, you need a REAL ID-compliant license, state ID, or another federally accepted ID.8Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID Showing up at a TSA checkpoint without acceptable ID carries a $45 fee.

You don’t have to get a REAL ID card specifically. A valid U.S. passport, passport card, military ID, permanent resident card, or Global Entry, NEXUS, or SENTRI card all work.9Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint If your Illinois license is the only federal-purpose ID you carry, upgrade to a REAL ID at your next renewal.

One warning for travelers: the temporary paper license handed to you at the facility is not accepted at TSA checkpoints.9Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint If you have a flight coming up, don’t let your current card expire during the wait. Time the renewal carefully, or carry a passport.
