Rapides Parish Sales Tax: Rates, Exemptions, and Remote Sellers

The Rapides Parish sales tax combines Louisiana’s 5 percent state rate with local levies that vary by location, so the total a customer pays ranges from 8.5 percent in unincorporated areas to 11 percent in Boyce. Every business selling, leasing, or renting tangible goods in the parish, or providing taxable services there, has to register with the parish separately from the state, collect at the rate for the delivery address, and file a return by the 20th of the month after each collection period.

Combined Rates by Location

Three parish-wide taxes apply everywhere in Rapides: a 1 percent general parish tax, a 1.5 percent school board tax, and a 0.5 percent law enforcement district tax. Cities and special districts stack their own levies on top. Louisiana’s state rate rose to 5 percent on January 1, 2025, up from 4.45 percent, and that rate holds through December 31, 2029.1Louisiana Department of Revenue. What Is the State Sales Tax Rate?

What customers actually pay at the register:

  • Alexandria: 10.5 percent (5.5 local + 5 state)
  • Pineville: 10.5 percent (5.5 local + 5 state)
  • Ball: 10.5 percent (5.5 local + 5 state)
  • Boyce: 11 percent (6 local + 5 state) — the highest in the parish
  • Woodworth: 10.5 percent (5.5 local + 5 state)
  • Glenmora: 10 percent (5 local + 5 state)
  • Cheneyville: 9.75 percent (4.75 local + 5 state)
  • Unincorporated areas: 8.5 percent (3.5 local + 5 state)

The rate follows the delivery destination, not the seller’s address. A shop based in an unincorporated part of the parish that delivers goods into Alexandria has to charge the 10.5 percent Alexandria rate. Mischarging by jurisdiction is one of the common triggers for an audit, so if you deliver, build the right rate into your point-of-sale setup by ZIP or address rather than by store location.

What Is Not Taxed

Louisiana exempts several categories from state and local sales tax, and those exemptions generally carry through in Rapides Parish:

  • Groceries bought for home consumption are exempt under Article VII, Section 2.2 of the Louisiana Constitution and R.S. 47:305(D)(n)–(r). Restaurant and prepared food stays taxable.
  • Prescription drugs, prescription eyeglasses, prosthetic devices, wheelchairs, and ostomy equipment are exempt.
  • Machinery and equipment used directly in manufacturing qualify under R.S. 47:301(3)(i).
  • Feed, seed, fertilizer, pesticides, and certain farm fuels are exempt as agricultural inputs.
  • Farmers selling their own products directly from the farm do not collect sales tax on those sales.

Businesses buying inventory to resell can avoid paying sales tax at the point of purchase by presenting a Louisiana Resale Certificate (Form R-1064). The Louisiana Department of Revenue issues it automatically when a qualifying dealer registers, and existing businesses can request one through the LaTAP portal.2Louisiana Department of Revenue. Who Qualifies for a Louisiana Resale Certificate? The certificate only covers goods you intend to resell. Using it to buy office supplies or equipment your business consumes is tax fraud.

Registering a Business

If you sell tangible personal property at retail, lease or rent tangible property, or provide taxable services in Rapides Parish, you need a parish sales tax number before you start collecting.3City of Alexandria. Guidelines on Opening Your Business This is a separate registration from your state sales tax account with the Louisiana Department of Revenue. You need both.

The Rapides Parish Sales and Use Tax Department sits at 5606 Coliseum Boulevard in Alexandria, and the phone number is (318) 445-0296. The application asks for your legal business name as registered with the Louisiana Secretary of State, your Federal Employer Identification Number, Social Security numbers for primary owners or officers, your physical and mailing addresses, the start date of operations in the parish, and a description of what the business does. You can file by mail, in person, or online. Once the department processes the application, it issues a registration certificate, which must be displayed at your place of business.

Filing Returns and Paying

Your account is assigned either monthly or quarterly filing status. Either way, the return and payment are due by the 20th of the month after the period closes. January collections are due February 20. Even a period with zero taxable sales still requires a return showing zero.4Rapides Parish Sales & Use Tax Department. Two electronic options handle filing and payment in one transaction: the Parish E-File portal at parishe-file.revenue.louisiana.gov and SalesTaxOnline.com. If you file by mail, the envelope has to be postmarked on or before the 20th. Save the confirmation number or postmark receipt as proof you filed on time.

Louisiana rewards timely state filers with a small vendor compensation deduction. Dealers who remit on time can deduct 1.05 percent of the tax due under R.S. 47:302, 321, and 331, which works out to roughly 0.84 percent of total state tax after the 2025 rate change, because the new levy under R.S. 47:321.1 does not qualify.5Louisiana Department of Revenue. Penalties and Interest for Filing Late

Miss the deadline and two charges start running at once.

The Rapides Parish penalty is 5 percent of the unpaid tax for each 30-day period (or fraction of a period) the return is delinquent, capped at 25 percent. A return 31 days late already carries a 10 percent penalty.4Rapides Parish Sales & Use Tax Department. Rapides Parish Sales and Use Tax Return The state uses the same structure: 5 percent per 30-day period, 25 percent maximum.6Louisiana Department of Revenue. Penalties

Interest on unpaid parish tax accrues daily at 12 percent per year. The formula: tax owed, times 12 percent, divided by 365, times the number of days delinquent.4Rapides Parish Sales & Use Tax Department. Rapides Parish Sales and Use Tax Return On a $5,000 balance 90 days late, interest runs about $148 and the penalty adds $750. The state may waive penalties for a delay caused by reasonable cause rather than negligence, but you have to request the waiver and the Secretary has to approve it.6Louisiana Department of Revenue. Penalties Interest is almost never waived.

How Long the Parish Can Audit You

The standard audit lookback is three years. In Louisiana the clock (called prescription) starts December 31 of the year the tax became due.7Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Revised Statutes RS 47:337.67 Tax on March 2025 sales becomes due in April 2025, so prescription starts December 31, 2025, and the parish can assess through December 31, 2028.

Two exceptions wipe the time limit out entirely. If you never filed a return for a period, prescription never starts, and the parish can go back as far as it wants on those unfiled periods. Fraud or intentional evasion also removes the limit.7Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Revised Statutes RS 47:337.67

Dealers have to keep sales records, invoices, bills of lading, and related documentation until the related taxes have prescribed.8Justia Law. Louisiana Revised Statutes 47:337.29 – Dealers Required to Make Reports and Keep Records That means at least three full years past the December 31 after the tax period, and longer if you are uncertain prescription has run. Shredding records while the parish can still audit leaves you with nothing to defend yourself with.

If You Sell Into Rapides Parish From Out of State

Remote sellers delivering into Louisiana are not exempt from parish tax. Once your direct sales into the state reach $100,000 in gross revenue during the current or prior calendar year, you meet the economic nexus threshold and must collect both state and local tax, including the Rapides Parish rate on deliveries to parish addresses.

You have to register with the Louisiana Sales and Use Tax Commission for Remote Sellers within 30 days of crossing the threshold.9Justia Law. Louisiana Revised Statutes 47:340 After the Commission approves you, you have 60 days to start collecting. Filing goes through remotesellersfiling.louisiana.gov, which takes a single return covering state and every local jurisdiction instead of a separate filing per parish.10Louisiana Sales and Use Tax Commission for Remote Sellers. Only direct sales count toward the $100,000. Sales you make through a marketplace facilitator such as Amazon or Etsy are generally excluded from your own threshold calculation because the marketplace collects and remits the tax on those orders. If you sell both ways, only your direct channel counts.
