How to Book the Appointment Online
Go to the MVC scheduling site and select the transaction type. This step trips people up, so read carefully:
- Pick REAL ID (listed under Driver’s License/Non-Driver ID Services) if you’re upgrading a current standard license or non-driver ID and your license isn’t due for renewal within three months.
- Pick Renewal: License or Non-Driver ID if your license is eligible for renewal. You can add the REAL ID upgrade during that appointment.
The REAL ID option is specifically flagged for people not yet eligible to renew, so choosing the wrong category can waste the visit.3New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. NJ MVC Appointment Scheduling After picking the transaction type, choose one of the state’s 28 licensing centers, then a date and time from the calendar, and enter your email for the confirmation.4New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Plans change. To reschedule or cancel, click the edit link in the confirmation email; the system lets you pick a new slot or delete the appointment. There’s no fee for rescheduling.5TeleGov. Help – TeleGov

Documents to Bring
New Jersey uses its 6 Points of ID system for REAL ID. You need documents totaling at least six points, plus proof of your Social Security number and two proofs of your New Jersey address.6Cornell Law Institute. Primary Identity Document (4 Points)
Bring at least one primary document. The common options are a U.S. birth certificate (original or a certified copy from a vital statistics office) or a valid U.S. passport. Photocopies don’t count. The remaining points come from secondary documents like a prior NJ license, a credit or debit card in your name, or a school ID.6Cornell Law Institute. New Jersey Code 13:21-8.2 – Standard Driver License and Identification Card
Social Security Number
You enter the number on the application, and MVC verifies it electronically with the Social Security Administration. If that check fails and you have no backup document, you’ll leave empty-handed. Bring one of these as insurance:
- Original Social Security card (not a photocopy)
- W-2 issued within the past year
- Pay stub showing your full name and complete SSN
- 1099 issued within the past year
Two Proofs of New Jersey Address
Both documents must show your name and current residential address, matching what’s on your application:
- Utility or credit card bill issued within the past 90 days
- Bank or credit union statement issued within the past 60 days
- Current, unexpired lease or rental agreement
- Property deed or title
- Government mail received within the past six months
Bridging a Name Change
If your legal name doesn’t match the name on your birth certificate or passport, bring documents that connect the two. A certified marriage certificate, civil union certificate, divorce decree, or court-ordered name change will do it. Every link in the chain needs its own document: if you married, divorced, and remarried, you need all three records showing the progression.7New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. REAL ID Document Requirements
A divorce decree only works as proof you resumed a previous name if it specifically authorizes the change and lists both names. Commemorative marriage certificates signed by clergy don’t count; you need the certified county-issued copy.
At the Licensing Center
Check in with your confirmation when you arrive. A technician will review your documents and your completed Form BA-208, the standard application for permits, licenses, and non-driver IDs. Download it from the MVC forms page and fill it out ahead of time so every field matches your supporting documents exactly, especially your legal name and date of birth.9New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. After Your Visit
New Jersey uses central issuance, so your card isn’t printed at the licensing center. The technician gives you a temporary paper document, and the permanent card is mailed to your verified home address in roughly 10 business days. If your travel is close and you can’t wait, MVC offers emergency expedited issuance that takes a minimum of three business days.10New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. REAL ID Emergency Issuance
The temporary paper document is valid for driving but is not REAL ID-compliant for TSA screening. If you have a flight before the card arrives, bring your passport or another federally accepted ID to the airport.
Do You Actually Need a REAL ID?
Federal enforcement began May 7, 2025, so you now need a REAL ID or another accepted ID to board a domestic flight or enter most federal facilities.11Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID A valid U.S. passport or passport card, Department of Defense ID (including dependent IDs), DHS trusted traveler card such as Global Entry or NEXUS, or a state-issued enhanced driver’s license all work at TSA checkpoints.12Department of Defense. REAL ID Required for U.S. Travelers Beginning May 7, 2025 Your standard New Jersey license still covers driving and any purpose that doesn’t involve federal security screening. If your current license already has a gold star in the upper right corner, it’s REAL ID-compliant.13New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. NJMVC REAL ID
Showing up at a TSA checkpoint without any of these isn’t an automatic turnaway. TSA rolled out a backup program called ConfirmID in February 2026: you pay a $45 fee online at TSA.gov/ConfirmID before your trip, receive a receipt, and present it with any government-issued ID for additional screening. The receipt covers a 10-day travel window.14Transportation Security Administration. TSA Successfully Rolls Out TSA ConfirmID Paying $45 every flight adds up fast, which is why most frequent travelers book the appointment.
A few federal facilities remain accessible without a REAL ID, including those providing health or life-preserving services, federal benefits offices such as Social Security or the VA, and polling places.15Department of Homeland Security. ID Requirements for Federal Facilities
