REAL ID in Massachusetts: Required Documents and How to Apply

To meet Massachusetts REAL ID requirements, you bring four original documents to an in-person appointment: one proving lawful presence in the United States, one showing your Social Security number, and two proving your Massachusetts residency.¹ Since May 7, 2025, anyone 18 or older needs a REAL ID-compliant license, a U.S. passport, or another federally accepted ID to board a domestic flight or enter certain federal buildings.²

The Four Documents

Photocopies do not count. Laminated documents are rejected. A single document cannot satisfy more than one category, so a utility bill with your name and address still leaves you needing a separate identity document.³⁴

One Proof of Lawful Presence

Any one of the following works:

U.S. passport or passport card
Certified U.S. birth certificate issued by the city, county, or state of birth, with the registrar’s signature and the issuing authority’s seal
Certificate of Naturalization (Form N-550 or N-570)
Certificate of Citizenship (Form N-560 or N-561)
Consular Report of Birth Abroad (Form FS-240, DS-1350, or FS-545)
Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551)
Employment Authorization Document (Form I-766)
Foreign passport with a valid U.S. visa and an I-94 arrival/departure record

A Puerto Rican birth certificate must have been issued after July 1, 2010. Birth abstracts are accepted only if they include the registrar’s signature, seal, and filing date.⁴

One Proof of Your Social Security Number

The document must display your full nine-digit number. Any of these works:

Social Security card
W-2 form
SSA-1099 or non-SSA-1099 form
Pay stub showing your full SSN

If you are not eligible for a Social Security number, the RMV accepts an SSN Denial Notice issued within the previous 60 days, presented together with your passport, visa, and I-94.⁵ If your Social Security card is lost and no other document on the list shows your full SSN, request a replacement before you schedule; it can take two to four weeks.

Two Proofs of Massachusetts Residency

You need two different documents showing your current Massachusetts residential address. P.O. boxes and “in care of” addresses are not accepted. Only one RMV-issued document (your current license or Mass ID) can count toward the two, so your second proof has to come from a different source. The RMV groups acceptable documents into three subcategories with different freshness rules:⁴

Bills dated within 60 days: utility (electric, water, gas, cable), cell phone, credit card, or medical and health insurance statements
Insurance policies for the current year: auto, renter’s, or homeowner’s
Other: bank or mortgage statement, lease agreement, property tax bill, or your current Massachusetts driver’s license or Mass ID

Rules That Send People Home

Your Name Must Match Across Documents

If your current legal name does not match the name on your identity document, you have to trace every change in between. One marriage covers one change. Two marriages, or a court-ordered name change somewhere in the chain, means bringing certified documentation for each step. Acceptable name-change documents include certified marriage certificates, divorce decrees, and court orders.¹

Foreign-Language Documents Need Certified Translations

The RMV accepts non-English documents only with a certified translation. Both the translation and a certification statement must be printed on the letterhead of the person or organization that translated it. Qualified translators include language service providers, bilingual notaries, the relevant consulate, accredited college language instructors, and community-based organizations. The certification must include the translator’s name, address, signature, qualifications, and a statement confirming the translation is complete and accurate.⁶ Professional translation for a single-page legal document typically runs $20 to $40.

How to Apply

Start online at Mass.gov/myRMV. The pre-application walks you through the checklist and confirms you have everything before you book a visit.¹

After finishing the online portion, schedule an in-person appointment at an RMV service center, or at a AAA branch if you’re a member. Appointments are required. Clear any outstanding obligations with the RMV before you go, such as unpaid excise taxes, since those can block the transaction.

What You’ll Pay

Upgrading a Class D license to REAL ID at renewal: $50 for the full five-year renewal
Upgrading an existing license or Mass ID to REAL ID outside your renewal cycle: $25
REAL ID Mass ID (non-driver): $25 for five years
Passenger/motorcycle combination license (Class DM) at renewal: $65⁷

If your license is close to expiring anyway, the $50 renewal fee gets you a fresh five-year card, which is often the better deal than paying $25 mid-cycle.

At the Appointment

Staff scan and verify each original document against federal and state requirements. This is the stage where a missing document or a name mismatch sends you home, so recheck your paperwork before you walk in. Once documents clear, you take your photo and pay. Cash, check, and credit card are all accepted. You leave with a temporary paper ID or receipt; the permanent card arrives by mail at your residential address, usually within 10 to 14 business days.¹

Non-Citizens and Limited-Term REAL IDs

Non-U.S. citizens and permanent residents can apply for a limited-term REAL ID that expires at the end of their authorized stay. To qualify, you must show immigration documents proving a lawful stay of at least 12 months.¹ The fee is prorated at $5 per year based on the duration of the card.⁸ Limited-term cards cannot be renewed online; when your authorized stay is extended, plan on another in-person visit with updated immigration documents.

Children Do Not Need One

TSA does not require identification for travelers under 18, so children do not need a REAL ID to fly domestically.⁹ Individual airlines sometimes have their own policies for unaccompanied minors, so check with the carrier before booking if your child is flying alone.

If You Don’t Have One Yet

You can still fly domestically without a REAL ID as long as you bring one of the other IDs TSA accepts at the checkpoint:¹⁰

U.S. passport or passport card
State-issued Enhanced Driver’s License
DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI)
U.S. military ID, including dependent IDs
Permanent resident card
Federally recognized tribal ID
Foreign passport
Certain mobile driver’s licenses from approved states

If you already carry a U.S. passport, there is no urgent reason to rush a REAL ID unless you also want a compliant license for entering federal facilities without pulling out the passport.
