To get a Real ID in Missouri, you must visit a license office in person and bring original documents from four categories: one proof of identity, one proof of your Social Security number, two proofs of Missouri residency from separate categories, and, for non-citizens, proof of lawful status. Missouri Real ID requirements cost no more than a standard license, but the documentation is stricter and digital copies won’t be accepted. Plan on gathering paperwork before you go, because a missing document means a second trip.1Missouri Department of Revenue. Missouri REAL ID Information
Proof of Identity
Bring one original document that proves who you are. Any of these work:
- Certified U.S. birth certificate issued by a state or local government agency (hospital certificates are not accepted)
- Valid, unexpired U.S. passport
- Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of Citizenship
- Valid, unexpired Permanent Resident Card
- Valid, unexpired Employment Authorization Document
- Valid foreign passport with an approved I-551 stamp, or with a valid U.S. visa and an I-94
- Valid, unexpired Real ID from Missouri or another state
Photocopies will not be accepted. If the name on this document isn’t your current legal name, you’ll also need documentation tracing the change (see the name change section below).2Missouri Department of Revenue. List of Acceptable Documents for REAL ID-Compliant Document Processing
Proof of Your Social Security Number
This is the requirement most applicants overlook. You need one document showing your full name and your complete Social Security number. It cannot be laminated or altered. Acceptable documents:
- Social Security card (must be signed if you’re 18 or older)
- W-2 form
- SSA-1099 or Non-SSA-1099 form
- Pay stub showing your name and full SSN
If your SSN has been verified with the Department of Revenue before, you may be able to state it verbally. First-time Real ID applicants shouldn’t rely on that and should bring a physical document. If your Social Security card is lost, ordering a replacement from the SSA typically takes a couple of weeks, so start early.2Missouri Department of Revenue. Two Proofs of Missouri Residency
You need two documents that show your name and current residential address, and they must come from two different categories. Most must be issued within the past year, with some categories requiring more recent dates. The DOR groups documents this way:
- Utility bills: phone, water, gas, electric, trash, sewer, internet, or cable
- Government correspondence: federal, state, or local government letters, property tax notices, W-2s, 1099 forms, military documents (including DD-214), or Social Security mailings. Official government documents must be issued within the previous 30 days.
- Financial documents: bank statements, credit card statements, investment account statements, paychecks, Social Security benefit checks, or tax refund checks
- Insurance or medical documents: vehicle, health, renter’s, or homeowner’s insurance notices; hospital or medical bills; dental records
- Educational or professional licensing documents: letters from academic institutions or professional licensing boards
- Housing documents: mortgage statements, lease agreements, or property deeds. Only one document from this category counts toward your two.
A few single-use options work on their own: a Missouri voter registration card issued within the past two years, a motor vehicle renewal postcard, or a postmarked envelope addressed to you. P.O. boxes do not count as a residential address. If you live in a shelter or transitional housing, a letter from the facility administrator issued within the previous 90 days is accepted.2Missouri Department of Revenue. Applicants under 21 who don’t have documents in their own name can use a parent’s or legal guardian’s residency document with a statement confirming the applicant lives in that household. That covers one of the two. Adults 21 and older need both documents in their own name.3Missouri Department of Revenue. List of Acceptable Documents for REAL ID-Compliant Document Processing
Lawful Status Documents for Non-Citizens
Non-U.S. citizens must present unexpired immigration documents showing authorized presence in the United States. Acceptable options include a valid Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551), an Employment Authorization Document (Form I-766), or a foreign passport with a valid U.S. visa and an I-94 arrival/departure record. Some of these can serve as both identity proof and lawful status verification.2Missouri Department of Revenue. List of Acceptable Documents for REAL ID-Compliant Document Processing
Licenses issued to non-citizens with a set authorized-stay end date may be marked “LIMITED TERM,” expiring based on that end date rather than the standard issuance period. If your status is up for renewal soon, consider timing your Real ID application after your immigration documents are extended so you receive the longest possible license term.1Missouri Department of Revenue. Documenting a Name Change
If your current legal name doesn’t match the name on your identity document, bring every document that traces the change from your birth name to your current name. Marriage certificates must be certified copies from a state or county office. Church-issued certificates are not accepted. Divorce decrees must explicitly state the name change and be signed by a judge. For adoptions or other legal name changes, you need a certified court order.4Missouri Revisor of Statutes. RSMo Section 302.171 – Application for License
The DOR cross-references your documents against Social Security Administration records, and any mismatch will stall the application. If you’ve recently changed your name, update it with the SSA first. Processing at SSA can take several weeks, and the DOR cannot issue your Real ID until the records match.
Fees and How Long the License Lasts
A Real ID costs the same as a standard Missouri license. There’s no upgrade fee. The amount depends on your license class and term. For a Class F license (standard personal vehicle), fees range from $16.50 for a three-year term to $25.50 for a six-year term. License offices also charge a separate processing fee of $9 for a three-year issuance or $18 for a six-year issuance.5Missouri Department of Revenue. Permit/Driver License/Nondriver ID Fees
The validity period matches what you’d get with a standard license. Your issuance term is based on your date of birth, license type, lawful status end date (if applicable), and certain commercial endorsements. Most adult drivers receive either a three-year or six-year license.1Missouri Department of Revenue. Missouri REAL ID Information
You May Not Need a Real ID at All
Missouri residents have needed a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or nondriver ID to board domestic flights and enter certain federal facilities and nuclear power plants since May 7, 2025. But a Real ID is not the only ID that works. TSA also accepts a U.S. passport or passport card, a U.S. Department of Defense ID (including dependent IDs and Common Access Cards), DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST), a permanent resident card, a Transportation Worker Identification Credential, a federally recognized tribal ID, and a foreign passport.6Transportation Security Administration. Children Under 18
TSA does not require children under 18 to show identification for domestic travel within the United States. Your child does not need a Real ID to fly. Individual airlines may have their own policies about verifying a minor’s identity, so check with your carrier if you’re unsure.6Transportation Security Administration.
