A red light ticket in Michigan usually costs between $130 and $200 once court fees and state assessments are added to the base fine. The civil fine itself is capped at $100, but the 3 points added to your driving record and the insurance premium increase that follows are where the real money goes.
What You’ll Pay the Court
Running a red light violates MCL 257.612 and is a civil infraction, not a crime. The maximum civil fine under the Michigan Vehicle Code is $100.1Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 257.907 If the violation caused an at-fault collision, the fine increases by $25, though it still cannot exceed $100.2Michigan Judicial Institute. Two charges get added on top of the fine:
- Court costs of up to $100, set by the judge to cover processing the case.1Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 257.907
- A flat $40 justice system assessment per civil infraction.1Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 257.907
So the legal ceiling is $240, but most courts charge well below that. Montcalm County, for example, lists disobeying a traffic signal at $128.3Montcalm County. Traffic/Civil Infraction Fine Schedule The exact total varies by district court, so check the amount printed on your ticket or call the court it names. Fines double for violations in a work zone, school zone, or at an emergency scene.
Points on Your Driving Record
A red light ticket adds 3 points to your Michigan driving record. Those points stay on your record for two years from the date you’re found responsible.4Monroe County, MI. Point System Three points from a single ticket won’t put your license at risk on their own, but they stack with any other moving violations in the same window.
If you accumulate 12 or more points within a two-year period, the Secretary of State requires a driver assessment reexamination.5Michigan Department of State. Driver Assessment That reexamination can result in a restricted license, suspension, or revocation. A red light ticket alone won’t get you there, but if you already have points on your record, the math starts to matter.
The Insurance Increase Is the Real Cost
The fine is a one-time hit. The insurance increase is not. Michigan drivers with a minor moving violation on their record commonly see a 10% to 25% premium increase at their next renewal. The exact amount depends on the insurer, your prior driving history, and your policy type, and the increase tends to stick around for several years since most insurers look back beyond the two-year point window when setting rates.
In dollars: if you pay $2,000 a year for auto insurance and your rate goes up 15%, that’s an extra $300 a year. Over three years, the insurance cost alone would be $900, well past the ticket itself. This is where red light tickets get genuinely expensive.
How to Avoid the Insurance Hit
Michigan offers a one-time way to keep the ticket invisible to your insurer. The Basic Driver Improvement Course, run through the Secretary of State’s office, lets eligible drivers complete a course so the violation appears on their record without points, and the violation isn’t reported to insurance companies.6Michigan Department of State. Basic Driver Improvement Course (BDIC) Eligibility
Eligibility is strict:
- You can only use BDIC once, ever.
- You must have had no more than 2 points on your record when the ticket was issued.
- The ticket must have been issued in Michigan.
- The violation cannot be a criminal offense.
- You cannot hold a commercial driver’s license or have been driving a commercial vehicle at the time.
If you’re eligible, the Secretary of State sends you a letter with a deadline. You must enroll and complete the course within 60 days of that notice. Miss the deadline and the points and violation go on your record and become visible to your insurer, with no extensions available.6Michigan Department of State. Basic Driver Improvement Course (BDIC) Eligibility For a first-time red light ticket with a clean record, BDIC is easily the most valuable option available, because it eliminates the insurance increase entirely. One note on timing: if you’re planning to use BDIC, wait for the Secretary of State’s notification letter before paying, since BDIC enrollment is a separate process from paying the fine.
What Ignoring the Ticket Costs
Letting a Michigan red light ticket slide gets expensive quickly. If you don’t pay or schedule a hearing by the deadline, the court enters a default judgment. The court then sends a notice to your last known address giving you 14 more days to respond. If you still don’t act, the court notifies the Secretary of State, who suspends your driver’s license.7Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 257.321a
Getting your license back means clearing the original ticket and paying a $45 driver license clearance fee to the court for each unresolved citation. The court then issues a clearance form you must take to a Secretary of State office to lift the suspension.836th District Court. Traffic Violations On top of that, failing to answer a traffic citation in Michigan is itself a misdemeanor, punishable by up to 93 days in jail, a fine of up to $100, or both.7Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 257.321a A $130 civil infraction can turn into a criminal record and a suspended license remarkably fast.
If You’re Licensed in Another State
A Michigan red light ticket doesn’t stay in Michigan. Under the Driver License Compact, Michigan reports traffic violations by non-residents to the driver’s home state, which then treats the offense as if it happened there and applies its own point system and penalties.9CSG National Center for Interstate Compacts. Driver License Compact Separately, under the Non-Resident Violator Compact, failing to resolve the Michigan ticket can lead to a license suspension in your home state. Resolve it with the Michigan court that issued it, or expect a suspension notice from your own state’s DMV.
A Note on Red Light Cameras
Michigan does not currently authorize automated red light cameras for general traffic enforcement. Recent legislation allows camera-based enforcement for school bus stop-arm violations, but that authority is limited to school buses and does not extend to intersection traffic signals.10Michigan State Police. Legal Update No. 165 If you got a red light ticket in Michigan, an officer observed the violation; it wasn’t generated by a camera.
