Renew Vehicle Registration in Georgia: Methods, Costs, and Deadlines

To renew your vehicle registration in Georgia, use the DRIVES e-Services portal online, mail your renewal notice to your county tag office, visit the tag office in person, or use a Georgia MV Express kiosk if your county has one. The standard renewal fee for a passenger car or light pickup is $20, your window opens up to 90 days before your birthday, and your insurance (plus an emissions test in 13 metro Atlanta counties) has to be on file electronically before the system will let you complete the renewal.1Department of Revenue. When Your Renewal Is Due

Georgia ties the registration cycle to the vehicle owner’s birthday. Your county tag office may mail a renewal notice 30 to 45 days before the deadline, but not every county sends one, and the deadline stands whether a notice reaches you or not.2Department of Revenue. Vehicle Registration Renewal – FAQ If your county participates in online renewal, you can start the process up to 90 days ahead of your birthday.

Missing the deadline has real teeth. Failing to register at all is a misdemeanor with a fine of up to $100, and driving on an expired plate and decal is a separate misdemeanor.3Justia. What You Need Before You Start

Have your license plate number or Vehicle Identification Number handy, along with a valid Georgia driver’s license or state ID. For online renewal, you’ll pay by credit card, debit card, or electronic check; for in-person renewal, ask your county tag office which methods it accepts.1Department of Revenue. Insurance on File

Your insurer must electronically report your liability coverage to the Georgia Electronic Insurance Compliance System (GEICS) before you can renew.5Department of Revenue. Insurers Requirements Tag offices pull directly from that database, so you don’t hand over a paper insurance card at the counter. If you’ve recently switched carriers or bought a policy, confirm with your insurer that the report has been transmitted before you try to renew, or the transaction will stall. Georgia’s minimum liability coverage is $25,000 per person and $50,000 per incident for bodily injury, plus $25,000 per incident for property damage.6Office of the Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire. Emissions Testing in Metro Atlanta

Thirteen counties require a passing emissions test before renewal: Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Paulding, and Rockdale.7Environmental Protection Division. Inspection and Maintenance (I/M) Unit

For the 2026 registration year, gasoline-powered cars and light-duty trucks (8,500 pounds or less) from model years 2002 through 2023 must be tested. Vehicles from model year 2024 or newer and 2001 or older are exempt, as are diesel vehicles, electric vehicles, and motorcycles.8Clean Air Force. Before You Test The exemption window shifts each year, so a vehicle that skipped the test last year may need one this year. Test results are reported to the state electronically; nothing to bring in on paper.

Owners temporarily stationed outside the metro area for military service, school, or work can request an extension of one inspection term.

How to Renew

Online

The DRIVES e-Services portal is the fastest route for most drivers. Enter your plate number or VIN, verify your information, and pay by card or electronic check.1Department of Revenue. Renew Vehicle Registration Expect a small convenience fee on top of the registration cost. Your decal comes by mail and can take up to three weeks to arrive, which is why the 90-day head start matters if your birthday is close.

By Mail

Send your completed renewal notice and payment to your county tag office. Postal time runs both ways, so start early. Your decal will be mailed back on roughly the same timeline as an online renewal.

In Person

Bring your Georgia license or ID to your county tag office. Insurance and emissions should already be flagged as current in the state system; bring documentation anyway in case of a reporting lag. You walk out with the new decal the same day.

Self-Service Kiosk

Georgia MV Express kiosks accept your renewal notice or plate number, take card payment, and print the decal on the spot. As of 2026, kiosks operate in Douglas, Fulton, Gwinnett, and Walton counties, typically inside Kroger stores or satellite tag offices. Residents of those counties can use any kiosk in the state, not only one in their home county.

What It Costs

The annual license plate renewal fee for a standard passenger car or lightweight pickup is $20.9Department of Revenue. Motor Vehicles Fees, Fines, and Penalties Other vehicle classes pay different amounts under the state fee schedule. Online renewals add a card or e-check convenience fee.

Whether you owe additional tax at renewal depends on when you bought the vehicle. If you purchased it before March 1, 2013, you likely owe annual ad valorem tax based on the vehicle’s assessed value, and that has to be paid at renewal before a decal is issued.10Department of Revenue. Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) Vehicles purchased on or after that date fall under the Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) system, which is a one-time tax paid when the vehicle is first titled, so no ad valorem amount comes due at renewal.

What Happens If You’re Late

Penalties start the day after your deadline. The state charges 10% of any ad valorem tax owed (with a $5 minimum) plus 25% of the license plate fee.9Department of Revenue. Motor Vehicles Fees, Fines, and Penalties For a post-2013 vehicle with no annual ad valorem tax, that works out to $5 on top of the standard $20 plate fee. For an older vehicle still on annual ad valorem, the late charge scales with the tax amount and can be substantially higher.

Driving on an expired registration is a misdemeanor, and a traffic stop can produce a citation or, in some cases, a tow.4Justia. Georgia Code 40-2-8 – Operation of Unregistered Vehicle

After You Renew

When the new decal arrives, place it directly on top of last year’s decal on your license plate. If you renewed online or by mail and nothing has arrived after three weeks, contact your county tag office to check the status before your deadline passes.

If You’ve Just Moved to Georgia

New residents don’t renew, they register for the first time, and the deadline is 30 days from the date you establish residency.11Department of Revenue. New to Georgia? That process involves a Georgia license, the MV-1 title/tag application, your out-of-state title, insurance reported to GEICS, an emissions test if you’re in one of the 13 counties, and payment of TAVT based on the vehicle’s fair market value. It has to be done in person at the county tag office, not online.
