Insurance on File

For the 2026 registration year, gasoline-powered cars and light-duty trucks (8,500 pounds or less) from model years 2002 through 2023 must be tested. Vehicles from model year 2024 or newer and 2001 or older are exempt, as are diesel vehicles, electric vehicles, and motorcycles.8Clean Air Force. Owners temporarily stationed outside the metro area for military service, school, or work can request an extension of one inspection term.
How to Renew
Online

Your decal comes by mail and can take up to three weeks to arrive, which is why the 90-day head start matters if your birthday is close.
By Mail
Send your completed renewal notice and payment to your county tag office. Postal time runs both ways, so start early. Your decal will be mailed back on roughly the same timeline as an online renewal.
In Person
Bring your Georgia license or ID to your county tag office. Insurance and emissions should already be flagged as current in the state system; bring documentation anyway in case of a reporting lag. You walk out with the new decal the same day.
Self-Service Kiosk
Georgia MV Express kiosks accept your renewal notice or plate number, take card payment, and print the decal on the spot. As of 2026, kiosks operate in Douglas, Fulton, Gwinnett, and Walton counties, typically inside Kroger stores or satellite tag offices. Residents of those counties can use any kiosk in the state, not only one in their home county.

Whether you owe additional tax at renewal depends on when you bought the vehicle. If you purchased it before March 1, 2013, you likely owe annual ad valorem tax based on the vehicle’s assessed value, and that has to be paid at renewal before a decal is issued.10Department of Revenue. Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) Vehicles purchased on or after that date fall under the Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) system, which is a one-time tax paid when the vehicle is first titled, so no ad valorem amount comes due at renewal.
What Happens If You’re Late
Penalties start the day after your deadline. The state charges 10% of any ad valorem tax owed (with a $5 minimum) plus 25% of the license plate fee.9Department of Revenue. For an older vehicle still on annual ad valorem, the late charge scales with the tax amount and can be substantially higher.

After You Renew
When the new decal arrives, place it directly on top of last year’s decal on your license plate. If you renewed online or by mail and nothing has arrived after three weeks, contact your county tag office to check the status before your deadline passes.
If You’ve Just Moved to Georgia
New residents don’t renew, they register for the first time, and the deadline is 30 days from the date you establish residency.11Department of Revenue. New to Georgia?
