An Alabama driver’s license renewal can be done online, in person at an ALEA driver license office or many county probate offices, or by mail if you qualify. Your renewal window opens 180 days before the expiration date on your card, and the standard four-year renewal fee is $36.25. If you miss the expiration date, Alabama gives you a 60-day grace period during which the license is still valid for driving.1Alabama Legislature. When You Can Renew and What Happens if You’re Late
The earliest you can renew is 180 days before expiration.1Alabama Legislature. You can still renew without retaking the written or road tests for up to three years after expiration, but you cannot legally drive during that time.1Alabama Legislature. How to Renew
Online
ALEA’s online system covers standard driver licenses, commercial licenses, state IDs, and STAR IDs. You can only use it once every eight years, though. If you renewed online last cycle, you’ll need to visit an office this time for a new photograph. You’ll need a credit card and a printer to produce the 30-day temporary license at home.
Online renewal is limited to straightforward transactions. Address changes, added or removed license classes, and endorsement updates all require an in-person visit.
In Person
Any ALEA driver license examining office can renew you, and so can many county probate and licensing offices. Go in person if you need an updated photo, are making changes beyond a simple renewal, or are applying for a STAR ID for the first time. First-time STAR ID applications are handled only at ALEA examining offices, not at probate offices.2Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Star ID
By Mail
Renewal by mail using ALEA’s Form DL-100 is available if you’re temporarily out of state for military service, employment, college, missionary work, or medical care. It’s also available to in-state residents who are physically unable to visit an office, and to dependents of military members.3Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Driver License Forms
What to Bring
For a routine renewal, bring your current Alabama driver license. You’ll confirm your address and emergency contact information on the application. Alabama does not require a vision test for standard renewals.
If You’re Getting a STAR ID
A STAR ID meets the federal REAL ID Act and will be required to board domestic flights and enter certain federal buildings. First-time STAR ID applicants must appear in person at an ALEA examining office with original documents proving three things:2Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Star ID
- Identity and date of birth, such as a birth certificate or valid U.S. passport.
- Your Social Security number, shown on a Social Security card, W-2, or pay stub.
- Alabama residency, proven by two documents such as utility bills, bank statements, or mortgage papers showing your name and Alabama address.
ALEA publishes a detailed acceptable-document list. Check it before your visit, because the specifics matter and showing up short means going home and coming back.
If Your Name Has Changed
If your name changed through marriage, divorce, or a court order, you have to update it at renewal. Bring the certified document. Update your name with the Social Security Administration first, because ALEA verifies name changes against SSA records.3Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. What It Costs
A standard four-year renewal is $36.25. Online transactions add a convenience fee for digital processing, and probate offices sometimes add a small local administrative charge, but the total generally stays under $50. Credit cards are accepted at offices and online. Some probate offices take cash or checks, but policies vary, so call ahead if you’re not paying by card.
Veterans can add a veteran designation to the license at no extra cost during renewal. Adding it between renewals means paying for a duplicate license at the standard duplicate fee.4Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Driver License Information
Your Temporary License and Permanent Card
When the transaction is done, you receive a paper receipt that acts as your legal driving permit for 30 days. Online renewals require you to print this yourself. The permanent plastic card arrives by mail, typically within a few weeks, and ALEA allows up to 30 days. Keep the paper receipt with you until the card shows up.
If you’ve recently moved, note that the U.S. Postal Service will not forward a driver license even if you have a forwarding order on file. Confirm that ALEA has your current mailing address before finishing the renewal.
If You’re Deployed Overseas
Active-duty service members deployed outside the United States can keep driving on an expired Alabama license as long as they carry a copy of current military orders.5Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code Title 32 Motor Vehicles and Traffic 32-6-1.1 ALEA can also let you renew up to one year before expiration, rather than the usual 180 days, with proof that deployment will keep you from renewing in the normal window. Active-duty members stationed out of state and their dependents can also use the DL-100 mail renewal.3Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Driver License Forms
Penalties for Driving After the Grace Period
Once your 60-day grace period runs out, driving on the expired card is a traffic violation. Fines and court costs vary by jurisdiction. In some counties the combined fine and court costs for operating without a valid license run around $244, and that’s before any insurance impact.
A suspended or revoked license is a different situation entirely, and much more serious. Driving on one is a misdemeanor carrying a fine of $100 to $500, a mandatory additional $50 penalty, and up to 180 days in jail, and ALEA can add a further six-month revocation at the Director of Public Safety’s discretion.6Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code Title 32 Motor Vehicles and Traffic 32-6-19 If your license was suspended rather than merely expired, don’t treat renewal as a fix; the suspension has to be resolved first.
