Renew Your Indiana Driver’s License Online Through myBMV

You can renew your Indiana driver’s license online through the BMV’s myBMV portal at myBMV.com, usually in just a few minutes, as long as your previous renewal was done in person at a branch and you meet the state’s other eligibility rules. If you qualify, you’ll print an interim license immediately and receive your permanent card in the mail within about two weeks.

Who Can Renew Online

Indiana sets specific conditions for electronic renewal under IC 9-24-12-5, and the list is longer than most people expect. You need to meet all of them:1Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Renewing a Driver’s License, Learner’s Permit, or Identification Card

  • You are a U.S. citizen and an Indiana resident. Lawful permanent residents and temporary visa holders must renew at a branch.
  • You are at least 21. Probationary license holders under 21 cannot renew online, and after your 21st birthday you have 30 days to renew before an administrative penalty applies.2Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Driver’s License Overview
  • Your last renewal was completed in person at a BMV branch. Indiana alternates between online and in-person cycles so the agency can update your photo and verify documents periodically.
  • Your name and address on file are unchanged since the last renewal.
  • Your license has not been expired more than 180 days. Past that point, you must appear in person and retake the written exam.3Indiana General Assembly. Indiana Code Title 9 Motor Vehicles 9-24-12-5
  • You are within 24 months of your renewal date. U.S. citizens can renew up to two years early.2Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Driver’s License Overview
  • You have fewer than six active points on your driving record since your last renewal.
  • Your license is not suspended, revoked, or invalidated.
  • You do not hold a restricted license (restrictions J or 2 through 9, which cover conditional licenses, ignition interlock devices, habitual traffic violator status, and similar conditions).
  • The BMV already has a valid computerized photo of you on file.

The alternating-cycle rule is the one that trips most people up. Even if you meet every other requirement, you can’t do two online renewals back to back. If your last renewal was online or by mail, you’re going to a branch this time.

What To Have Ready Before You Log In

Gather these before starting so you don’t get stuck partway through:

  • An active account at myBMV.com. If you don’t have one, you can register on the site using your personal information.
  • Your full name, date of birth, residential address, and Social Security number for logging in.1Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Renewing a Driver’s License, Learner’s Permit, or Identification Card
  • A Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express card. Have it in hand before you begin; the session can time out while you hunt for it.

You won’t upload any physical documents for a standard online renewal. The BMV verifies your identity against what’s already in its system from your last in-person visit.

Walking Through the myBMV Renewal

Once you log in, your dashboard shows your credential and the transactions available to you. Pick the renewal option and the system runs you through confirmation screens where you verify that your name, address, and other details on file are still accurate. That step functions as your digital signature confirming the BMV’s records are correct.

After confirming your information, you’ll land on the payment screen. Enter your card details, review the total, and submit. The system processes the payment through a secure server and generates a confirmation with a transaction ID. Save or screenshot it. That’s your proof the renewal went through if anything goes wrong later.

Your Interim License and Permanent Card

After the transaction completes, print a paper interim license from your myBMV account.1Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Renewing a Driver’s License, Learner’s Permit, or Identification Card Print it right away or save a digital copy to your phone. The interim document is legal proof of your driving privileges while the permanent card is being manufactured and shipped.

Your permanent card arrives by mail within 14 days if there are no problems with your application. If it doesn’t show up in that window, call the BMV at 888-692-6841. Customer service will research your application and confirm the mailing address.4Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Receiving Your Driver’s License or ID Card Through the Mail Don’t wait weeks hoping it turns up. Fourteen days is the agency’s own threshold for when to get in touch.

Fees

The BMV charges a renewal fee that depends on your age and the length of the license. A standard license for drivers under 75 is valid for six years; drivers 75 and older receive a three-year license.5Indiana General Assembly. If You’re 75 or Older

A common misconception is that drivers 75 and older can’t renew online at all. Indiana now allows it with one extra step: you must submit proof of passing a vision screening from a licensed ophthalmologist or optometrist, completed within 30 days of your renewal application.3Indiana General Assembly. Because your license is valid for three years rather than six, and you can’t do two online renewals in a row, you’ll alternate between the portal and a branch visit every three years.

REAL ID and Online Renewal

Federal REAL ID enforcement began May 7, 2025. Without a REAL ID-compliant license or an acceptable alternative such as a passport, you won’t clear TSA checkpoints for domestic flights. Getting a REAL ID for the first time requires an in-person branch visit with proof of lawful status, Social Security number, and Indiana residency.7Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Real ID Overview

If you already have a REAL ID-compliant Indiana license, you don’t need to bring those documents again at renewal. The documentation requirement doesn’t apply to subsequent transactions for U.S. citizens, so renewing online preserves your REAL ID status.7Bureau of Motor Vehicles. When You Must Visit a Branch Instead

Several situations rule out online renewal no matter what:

  • Your last renewal was online or by mail.
  • You need to update your name or address. Handle that at a branch first; then you may be able to renew online if you still meet the other requirements.
  • Your license has been expired more than 180 days, which triggers a written knowledge exam.3Indiana General Assembly. Indiana Code Title 9 Motor Vehicles 9-24-12-5
  • You have six or more active points on your record.
  • You’re under 21 and hold a probationary license.
  • You hold a commercial driver’s license, which involves federal medical certification requirements the portal doesn’t handle.
  • You’re upgrading to REAL ID for the first time.7Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Real ID Overview
  • You’re not a U.S. citizen. Lawful permanent residents and temporary status holders renew at a branch, and can do so up to 30 days before expiration.2Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Driver’s License Overview
  • Your license is suspended, revoked, or invalidated. Clear the underlying issue first.

For branch visits, you can check wait times and schedule appointments on the BMV website. The two-year early renewal window gives you room to pick a time that works instead of scrambling right before expiration.

BMV Connect Kiosks If You’d Rather Skip the Computer

If you want to avoid both a branch and a computer, Indiana’s BMV Connect kiosks handle driver’s license renewals around the clock, seven days a week. They go offline only on Sundays from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. Eastern for maintenance.8Bureau of Motor Vehicles. BMV Connect Kiosks

Kiosks accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express. The ones inside BMV branches also accept cash, which helps if you don’t have a card. To use a kiosk, bring your driver’s license or ID number, the zip code on file with the BMV, and the last four digits of your Social Security number.1Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
