To renew your driver license in Texas, you have three options: online through Texas.gov, by mail, or in person at a Department of Public Safety (DPS) office. The standard eight-year renewal fee is $32,1Texas Public Law. Texas Transportation Code 521.421 – License Fees; Examination Fees and you can start the process up to two years before your card expires or up to two years after. Miss that post-expiration window and DPS will treat you as a first-time applicant, tests and all.
When You Can Renew
Your renewal window opens two years before the expiration date printed on your license and closes two years after it.2Texas Department of Public Safety. Driver License Services – Appointments Anywhere inside that four-year band, you can renew normally. Once you pass the two-year mark after expiration, DPS won’t renew the card at all. You’ll have to reapply from scratch, which means a written knowledge test, a driving skills exam, and full new-applicant paperwork.3Texas Department of Public Safety. You also need to be a Texas resident whose license is not currently suspended, revoked, or canceled. Outstanding traffic tickets or warrants will block the renewal until you clear them with the appropriate court.
Renewing Online
Online renewal through the Texas.gov portal is the fastest route, but DPS limits who qualifies. You can use it only if all of the following are true:4Texas.gov. Texas Driver License and ID Cards Online Services Eligibility
- Your last renewal was done in person. You cannot renew online twice in a row.
- You are 78 or younger.
- You are a U.S. citizen with your Social Security number already on file with DPS.
- You hold a Class C, M, or CM license (standard passenger, motorcycle, or combination).
- You have no new vision, physical, or mental conditions since your last renewal that could affect your driving.
- You have no outstanding tickets, warrants, or suspensions.
Learner permits cannot be renewed online. If you hold both a driver license and a separate state ID card, you’ll need to visit a DPS office to surrender one before any online transaction goes through.
Renewing In Person
If you don’t qualify for online renewal, or if you need updated biometrics like a new photo, you’ll need to visit a DPS driver license office. Book an appointment through the DPS scheduler at txdpsscheduler.com to skip the walk-in line.2Texas Department of Public Safety. Driver License Services – Appointments The scheduler covers every driver license service, and it will also tell you whether you’re eligible to finish the transaction online instead.
At the office, you’ll present your documents, have your photo and fingerprints taken, and pass a vision screening.3Texas Department of Public Safety. Renew Your Texas DL, CDL, Motorcycle License or ID It’s a standard screening, not a comprehensive eye exam. If you wear corrective lenses, bring them.
Renewing by Mail
Mail renewal is mostly for Texans who are temporarily living outside the state and can’t get to a DPS office. Send a completed renewal form with the fee, by check or money order, to the DPS address printed on your renewal notice. Processing runs longer than online or in-person renewal, so start early if your expiration is close.
Documents You’ll Need
Whether you renew online or in person, DPS verifies the same core items:
- Proof of identity and lawful presence, such as a U.S. passport, birth certificate, or permanent resident card.
- Your Social Security number. A Social Security card works, or a W-2 or 1099 showing the full number. If your SSN is already on file with DPS, you may not need to bring a physical card for online renewal.
- Proof of Texas residency, such as a utility bill, bank statement, or lease.
- Current vehicle registration and liability insurance if you own a vehicle registered in Texas.
Bring originals to an in-person appointment, not photocopies. DPS staff scan and return them. Document requirements are stricter for a REAL ID-compliant card than a standard one, so check the DPS online tool before your visit.5Texas Department of Public Safety. Federal Real ID Act

Drivers 79 and Older
If you’re 79 or older, you have to renew in person. Online and mail renewal are off the table.10Texas Department of Public Safety. Senior Drivers – Age 65 or Older You’ll take a vision exam at the office, and a DPS specialist will review your medical history. Age alone doesn’t trigger a driving test, but if DPS has concerns about your ability to drive safely, they can require a skills evaluation or additional documentation from your doctor.
At 85, the renewal cycle shortens from eight years to two.7Texas Public Law. Texas Transportation Code 521.271 – License Expiration That means more frequent trips to DPS, but a smaller fee each time.
Military Stationed Out of State
Active-duty military members, their spouses, and their dependents get accommodations civilian drivers don’t. Your Texas license stays valid past its printed expiration date as long as it isn’t suspended, canceled, or revoked. To drive on it, carry both the expired Texas license and a valid military ID.11Texas Department of Public Safety. Renew or Replacing Your DL or ID While You Are Out-of-State
After an honorable discharge, your license remains valid until the earlier of 91 days after discharge or the day you return to Texas. Military families can also renew a license that has been expired more than two years, bypassing the rule that forces civilians to start over.11Texas Department of Public Safety. Renew or Replacing Your DL or ID While You Are Out-of-State Active-duty members stationed outside Texas can also have their current out-of-state address printed on the renewed card.
If You Get Pulled Over With an Expired License
Driving on an expired license in Texas is a Class C misdemeanor, the same category as a standard traffic ticket.12State of Texas. Texas Transportation Code 521.457 It becomes a Class B misdemeanor if you have a prior conviction for the same offense, lack required liability insurance, or have a past license suspension tied to an intoxication offense. If you’re uninsured and cause a crash resulting in serious injury or death, the charge climbs to a Class A misdemeanor.
There is a way out. A judge can dismiss the charge entirely if you get your license renewed within 20 working days or before your first court appearance, whichever comes later. The court may still assess a reimbursement fee of up to $20.13State of Texas. Texas Transportation Code 521.026 – Dismissal of Expired License Charge
After You Renew
Once your renewal is processed, DPS issues a temporary paper permit that is legally valid for 60 days.14Texas Department of Public Safety. Section 3: Issuing a Temporary Permit Keep it with you whenever you drive. Your permanent card is printed at a central DPS facility and mailed to the address on file, usually arriving within two to three weeks. If it hasn’t shown up within 60 days, contact DPS before the temporary expires so you’re not driving on nothing while you wait on the mail.
