Renew Your Nevada Driver’s License: Online, In Person, or by Mail

You can renew your Nevada driver’s license online, by mail, or in person at a DMV office, and the window opens 90 days before the expiration date printed on your card. Most drivers under 65 pay $41.50 for an eight-year renewal, and online renewal through a free MyDMV account takes only a few minutes if you qualify. Nevada gives no grace period after expiration, so plan ahead: a $10 late fee kicks in at 30 days, and waiting a full year forces you to retake the written knowledge test.1Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. When You Can Renew

Nevada issues eight-year licenses to drivers under 65 and shorter terms to older drivers. Your driving privileges end at midnight on the date printed on the front of the card.

Online renewal opens 90 days before expiration and stays available for up to 364 days after. In-person appointments can be scheduled up to six months in advance. There is no grace period: driving on an expired license is a misdemeanor in Nevada, though the fine may be waived if you can show the license was valid when you were stopped.1Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. What It Costs

  • Eight-year renewal (under 65): $41.50
  • Four-year renewal (limited term): $22.50
  • Late fee once expired 30 days or more: $10 added to the renewal cost2Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Driver License/ID Fees and Exemptions

The Nevada DMV does not charge convenience fees, credit card surcharges, or mailing fees for any transaction. Renewing Online Through MyDMV

Online is the fastest option and works for most drivers. Create a free MyDMV account at dmv.nv.gov, which also lets you manage your vehicle records.5Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Online Services Your new card is mailed with your existing photo, so no new picture is taken.

You can renew online if you are between 16 and 70 and hold a four- or eight-year non-commercial license. You are not eligible if you:

  • Are 71 or older
  • Hold a commercial driver’s license, instruction permit, or Driver Authorization Card
  • Have a license term shorter than four years (which applies to certain non-U.S. citizens, registered sex offenders, and drivers with specific medical conditions)
  • Have three or more moving violations in the past four years1Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Driver’s License or ID Card Renewal

Eight-year license holders can renew online every other cycle, so an in-person visit is only required once every 16 years.6Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Renewing In Person

In-person renewal is required if you are 71 or older, if you are upgrading to a REAL ID, or if you are not eligible for the online or mail options. Nevada uses an appointment system at its regional offices, and scheduling through the DMV website is the easiest way to avoid long waits. Walk-ins are accepted, but appointment holders are seen first.

If you still have a standard Nevada license, consider upgrading to REAL ID at renewal. Since May 7, 2025, a standard license is no longer accepted for boarding domestic flights or entering secure federal facilities such as military bases. A compliant card is marked with a gold star in the upper right corner; a valid U.S. passport or military ID also works as an alternative.7Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID REAL ID requires an in-person visit with original or certified proof of identity, Social Security number, and two documents proving Nevada residency; the full checklist is on the DMV’s REAL ID page.8Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Nevada Real ID If your current card already has the gold star, you do not need to resubmit any of this at renewal.

Renewing By Mail

Mail renewal is intended for people who are outside Nevada or otherwise unable to visit an office. Use Form DMV-204, which is downloadable from the DMV website, and send it to DMV Central Services in Carson City. Only one consecutive renewal can be done by mail, so if you renewed by mail last time, you will need to use online or in-person this round.10Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Active-duty service members stationed outside Nevada can renew by mail up to two years after expiration and are exempt from the $10 late fee. The same late-fee exemption applies to the spouse or dependent of a deployed service member whose license expired during the deployment.10Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Vision Check and Address Updates

Every renewal includes a vision check. The minimum for full driving privileges is 20/40 acuity. If you need glasses or contacts to meet that threshold, a “Restriction B” notation is added to your license. Drivers who fall below 20/40 even with correction may be limited to daytime driving or required to submit annual vision reports. There is no charge for the vision test at a DMV office.12Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Driver License Testing

If you renew by mail, a licensed physician, ophthalmologist, or optometrist must complete the vision section of Form DMV-204 within 90 days of submission. Applicants who will be 71 or older by their expiration date also need a physical evaluation completed by a licensed physician on the same form.10Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. If you have moved since your last renewal, you must provide two documents proving your new Nevada address, such as a utility bill, bank statement, lease, or mortgage document.13Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Proof of Identity and Residency Update your address through MyDMV before or during the renewal. An address change within 60 days of your expiration date will automatically trigger a renewal as well.

If Your License Has Already Expired

The consequences escalate the longer you wait. For the first 30 days after expiration you can renew normally with no penalty, but you should not drive during that period because the license is no longer valid.

  • Expired 30 days to one year: you can still renew online or in person, but a $10 late fee is added.2Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Driver License/ID Fees and Exemptions
  • Expired one year or more: you must retake the written knowledge test in addition to paying the late fee.
  • Expired four years or more: you must pass both the written test and the behind-the-wheel skills test, essentially starting over.1Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Driver’s License or ID Card Renewal

The $10 late fee can be waived in a few specific situations: if you did not drive at all while expired and sign an affidavit saying so, if you hold a valid license from another state, or if your license expired during active military service or incarceration.3Nevada Legislature. After You Renew

However you renew, you will receive an interim document that works as a temporary license while the permanent card is manufactured. That paper receipt is legally valid for driving.

Your plastic card is mailed through the U.S. Postal Service, typically within 7 to 10 business days, and you can track the mailing date through your MyDMV account. If it has not arrived after 30 days, contact the DMV. The DMV does not use mail forwarding, so the address on file must be current when the card is sent.1Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles.
