Renew Your NY Driver License: Online, Mail, or In Person

You can renew a NY driver license online at dmv.ny.gov, by mail, or at a DMV office, and the window runs from one year before your expiration date to two years after it. A renewed license is good for eight years, and renewing anywhere inside that window won’t change your new expiration date or the fee.¹ Which method you use depends on your license class, whether you’re upgrading to a REAL ID or Enhanced credential, and whether your name or address has changed.

When to Renew

Your renewal window opens 12 months before the expiration printed on your card and stays open for two years after. Miss that two-year mark and the DMV treats you as a new applicant, which means retaking the written test, completing a pre-licensing course, and passing a road test again.¹

Being inside the two-year window is not the same as being legal to drive. Driving on an expired license is a violation. Within 60 days of expiration, the fine is up to $40 plus surcharges. After 60 days, it climbs to $75 to $300 plus surcharges, and a judge can impose up to 15 days in jail.² Renew before the card lapses if you can.

Which Method You Can Use

Online renewal is available if you already hold a Standard, REAL ID, or Enhanced license and want to keep the same type. Commercial license holders and Class N drivers cannot renew online and must visit a DMV office. You also cannot change your license class through the online system.¹

Mail renewal works for the same basic cases as online and is useful if you’d rather not use the portal or your vision provider isn’t in the DMV’s registry.

An in-person visit is required if you’re upgrading to a REAL ID or Enhanced license for the first time, renewing a commercial license, or changing your license class. It’s also required for name changes on REAL ID, Enhanced, and commercial licenses.

The Vision Test

Every renewal, whatever the method, requires proof you meet New York’s vision standard: at least 20/40 acuity in one or both eyes, with or without corrective lenses.³ There are two ways to satisfy it.

If your eye doctor is enrolled in the DMV’s Online Vision Registry, they submit your results electronically and you don’t need to enter anything or mail a form.⁴ Otherwise, any physician, optometrist, ophthalmologist, or optician can complete a Vision Test Report (Form MV-619). You then key that report’s information into the online renewal or mail the paper form in with a paper application.³

Renewing Online

Go to the DMV’s online renewal portal or sign in through MyDMV with your NY.gov ID. The system asks you to confirm your address, which must match what the DMV has on file. If you’ve moved, update your address through MyDMV first, then start the renewal; otherwise there’s no guarantee the postal service will forward the new card.¹

If your vision provider is in the registry, the test information is already there. If not, you’ll enter the details from your MV-619 during the transaction. Pay by credit or debit card. Your fee is shown on-screen before you commit. Once payment goes through, you can immediately download and print a temporary license as a PDF.

Renewing by Mail

The DMV usually mails a renewal notice (Form MV-2) before your license expires. Complete that notice and return it. If you never got the notice or lost it, download Form MV-44 (Application for Permit, Driver License, or Non-Driver ID Card) from the DMV site instead. The MV-44 asks for your full legal name, date of birth, and Social Security number.⁵

Include your completed Vision Test Report (MV-619) if your provider didn’t submit results through the registry. Enclose a check or money order made out to “Commissioner of Motor Vehicles” for the renewal fee. Send everything to:

Renewing in Person

Book an appointment through the DMV’s reservation system at public.nydmvreservation.com before you go.⁶ Bring your completed MV-44, vision test documentation, and any identity proofs required if you’re upgrading. Offices accept cash, credit card, or check.

Upgrading to a REAL ID or Enhanced License

Federal REAL ID enforcement took effect May 7, 2025. To board a domestic flight or enter certain federal buildings, you now need a REAL ID-compliant license, an Enhanced license, or a valid U.S. passport.⁷ If you’re still on a standard New York license, renewal is a natural time to upgrade.

The catch: you cannot upgrade online the first time. You have to visit a DMV office with original documents. Photocopies are not accepted for identity proofs. You’ll need:

Proof of identity and citizenship or lawful status, such as a U.S. passport, certificate of naturalization, or an original U.S. birth certificate issued by a state or local government.⁸
Proof of Social Security: your original card, a stub, or your number printed on Form MV-44.
Two proofs of New York residency, such as a bank statement, utility bill, or pay stub, each issued within the past year. P.O. Box addresses are not accepted.⁹

The documents together must total at least six points on the DMV’s proof-of-identity scale, detailed on Form ID-44. If your name has changed since your birth certificate was issued, bring documents connecting the name trail, such as a marriage certificate or divorce decree.

The Enhanced license is available only to U.S. citizens who reside in New York. It works as a border-crossing document for land and sea travel to Canada, Mexico, and parts of the Caribbean, so you don’t need a passport for those trips. It does not work for international air travel.⁹ The Enhanced credential adds $30 on top of the standard renewal fee.¹⁰

What It Costs

Fees vary by your age at renewal, license class, and whether you live in the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District (MCTD), which covers New York City, Long Island, and several surrounding counties. MCTD residents pay an extra $1 for every six months of the license term, which adds $16 to an eight-year license.¹ For a Class D driver aged 21 or older, expect roughly $64 to $78 depending on age bracket and MCTD status.¹⁰

Your exact fee is on the mailed renewal notice and displayed on-screen before you pay online. Enhanced adds $30. Class E and motorcycle licenses use different fee schedules.

Your Temporary License and the Card in the Mail

Once the DMV processes the renewal, you receive or download a temporary license valid for 60 days.¹ Keep it with you when you drive. Law enforcement accepts it as proof of a valid license while you wait for the plastic card.

The permanent license is mailed to the address on file. Allow two to three weeks.¹¹ High volumes can push that timeline out. If it’s been more than three weeks, check status through the DMV’s online mailing tracker before assuming something went wrong. If the card was sent to an old address because you didn’t update your records, the DMV generally cannot redirect it, and you may have to request a replacement.

Changing Your Name or Address Before You Renew

New York law requires you to notify the DMV in writing within 10 days of any address change. Do that through MyDMV before you renew so the new card goes to the right place.

Name changes are handled by license type. If you hold a Standard license and have already updated your name with the Social Security Administration, you can change your name by mail using Form MV-44NC. Include a copy of your new Social Security card and a copy of the document supporting the change (marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order). The fee is $12.50, and the package goes to the Utica processing center.¹²

If you hold a REAL ID, Enhanced credential, or commercial license, the name change must happen in person at a DMV office. Bring a completed MV-44, your current license (or at least six points of identity proof), and an original or certified copy of your marriage certificate, divorce papers, or court-ordered name change.¹² Since you’re already at the office, you can handle both the name change and the renewal in one visit.

If You’re on Active Military Duty Outside New York

State law automatically extends your license expiration to six months after separation from service if you’re on active duty away from New York. To use that extension, notify the DMV of your entry into military service on Form MV-75. Skipping that notification can create problems when you try to renew after discharge.¹³
