Renew Your NY Driver’s License: Fees, REAL ID, and Deadlines

You can renew a NY driver’s license online, by mail, or at a DMV office during a window that opens 12 months before the expiration date on your card and stays open for two years after it. A standard eight-year Class D license costs $64.50, or $80.50 if you live in the New York City metro area. Wait longer than two years past expiration and you lose the ability to renew — you’ll have to apply as a first-time driver and pass the written and road tests again.¹

When You Can Renew and What Late Costs You

The renewal window is generous. Any time in the 12 months before your expiration date, or the 24 months after it, you can use the same online, mail, or in-person process. Past that 24-month mark, the DMV treats you as a brand-new applicant: vision screening, written knowledge test, five-hour pre-licensing course, and a scheduled road test.¹ Road tests can take weeks to book, and you can’t legally drive while you wait.

Driving on an expired license is a violation of Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 509. If your license expired within the last 60 days, the maximum fine is $40. After that, fines run from $75 to $300, and a court can impose up to 15 days in jail.² Some insurers also treat an expired license as grounds to deny a claim.

What You Need Before You Start

A Vision Test

Every renewal requires proof you meet the state’s minimum vision standards under Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 502.³ Three ways to satisfy it:

Visit a provider enrolled in the DMV’s Online Vision Registry. The provider submits your results electronically, which is the smoothest path for online and mail renewals because the DMV already has your results when you apply.⁴
Have a physician, optometrist, ophthalmologist, optician, physician’s assistant, or registered nurse complete form MV-619 on paper. Include it with a mail renewal or bring it to a DMV office.⁵
Take the vision screening at the DMV counter when you go in person.⁵

Documents by License Type

What paperwork you need depends on whether you’re keeping a standard license, upgrading to a REAL ID, or getting an Enhanced Driver License.

For a standard renewal, you need your nine-digit DMV ID number (printed near the top of your current card), the last four digits of your Social Security number, and a passing vision test.⁶ No new identity or residency proofs are needed because those were verified when the license was first issued.

For a REAL ID, you need two separate proofs of New York residency (utility bill, bank statement, pay stub) and proof of Social Security status (Social Security card, W-2, or 1099 showing the full number).⁷ Your first REAL ID upgrade has to happen in person.

For an Enhanced Driver License, you need everything a REAL ID requires plus citizenship documentation: a U.S. passport, an original or certified birth certificate, a Certificate of Naturalization, or a Certificate of Citizenship.⁸ First-time EDLs also require an in-person visit.

If your legal name has changed since your last license — marriage, divorce, or court order — bring proof of every name change so the DMV can trace your documents to your current name.⁷

Renewal Fees

A standard Class D license costs $64.50 for the full eight-year term. A Class M motorcycle-only license costs $72.50.¹ There is no extra charge to make your license a REAL ID. Upgrading to an Enhanced Driver License adds $30 to the base fee.⁹

Residents of the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District pay a $1.00 surcharge for every six months of license validity, which comes to $16.00 over an eight-year term. The MCTD covers the five boroughs plus Dutchess, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester counties. A Class D renewal for an MCTD resident totals $80.50.¹

Commercial driver license renewals cost more: $164.50 for a Class A, B, or C in standard or REAL ID form, or $194.50 for an Enhanced version, plus the MCTD surcharge if it applies.¹⁰

How to Renew Online

Online is the fastest option. Open the DMV’s online transaction portal, enter your nine-digit DMV ID number and the last four of your Social Security number. If your vision provider already submitted results through the Online Vision Registry, the system finds them. Confirm your mailing address, pay with a credit or debit card, and you’re done.¹

You can’t renew online if you’re upgrading to a REAL ID or Enhanced license for the first time, or if you need to update your lawful status. Those cases require an in-person visit.⁷

How to Renew by Mail

The DMV sends a renewal notice (form MV-2) before your license expires. Complete it, sign it, and mail it back with your payment and, if your vision provider isn’t in the Online Vision Registry, a completed MV-619.¹ If you never got a notice, download form MV-44 (Application for Permit, Driver License, or Non-Driver ID Card) from the DMV website and use that instead.¹¹

Mail renewals take longer because of postal transit and manual processing. Build in extra time if your expiration date is close.

How to Renew In Person

An office visit is required if you’re upgrading to a REAL ID or Enhanced license for the first time, or if you need to update your photo or lawful status. Book an appointment through the DMV’s online reservation system before you go; walk-ins can face long waits or be turned away at busy offices.

Bring your renewal notice (MV-2) or a completed MV-44, plus the identity and residency documents required for your license type. If a registry provider hasn’t already submitted your vision results and you don’t have a completed MV-619, you can take the vision test at the counter. A clerk reviews your documents, takes a new photo, and processes the renewal. You leave with a paper receipt that works as a temporary license.¹

REAL ID and the Federal Deadline

As of May 7, 2025, federal law requires a REAL ID-compliant document (or an acceptable alternative like a passport) to board a domestic flight or enter certain federal facilities.¹² A standard New York license no longer clears TSA on its own. Since there is no extra fee for a REAL ID over a standard license, your next renewal is a convenient time to upgrade.⁹

You can also convert to a REAL ID or Enhanced license before your normal renewal window opens. To do that, your current license must be valid, not expired, issued more than six months ago, not expiring within the next 12 months, and not in a conditional or restricted status.⁷ An Enhanced Driver License is accepted at TSA checkpoints too.

After You Renew

Once your renewal is processed, you get a temporary document valid for 60 days. Online renewals produce a downloadable PDF you should print and carry; in-person and mail renewals produce a paper receipt that does the same job.¹

Your permanent license arrives by mail. The DMV asks you to allow two to three weeks, and you can track the mailing status on its website.¹³ If it hasn’t arrived by then, call the DMV — the card may have come back to them because of an address mismatch.

New York also offers a Mobile ID, a digital version of your license on your smartphone. It’s free for state residents, and TSA now accepts New York-issued mobile driver licenses at checkpoints equipped with digital ID readers nationwide.¹⁴ For federal purposes, the mobile version has to be based on a REAL ID or Enhanced license.¹⁵

Military Members Stationed Away From New York

Active-duty military members stationed outside New York get an automatic extension. Under Unconsolidated Laws Section 9196(3), if your license would expire during your service, the expiration extends to six months after separation. To claim it, file form MV-75 with the DMV before you leave. The form has two parts: one goes to the DMV’s License Production Bureau in Albany, and the other stays with you and your license as proof.¹⁶ If you’re already deployed and your license is about to expire, a family member can submit the form for you.

Commercial Driver Licenses

CDL renewals carry extra requirements. Every commercial driver must keep a current medical self-certification on file with the DMV, declaring which of four federal operating categories applies. Drivers in non-excepted categories also need a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate on file. Let the medical certificate lapse and your commercial privileges are downgraded even if the license itself is still valid.¹⁷

CDL holders with a hazardous materials endorsement must also pass a TSA security threat assessment, which includes fingerprinting and a background check. The fee is $85.25, and TSA recommends applying at least 60 days before you need the endorsement because processing can take more than 45 days. In New York, you apply through your local DMV office.¹⁸
