Renew Your NYS Driver License: Fees, Vision Test, and Documents

You can renew your New York driver license online through MyDMV, by mail, or at a DMV office, and the renewal window opens 12 months before your expiration date.¹ A New York license is valid for eight years. Most renewals need only a current vision test and the correct fee, but if you’re upgrading to a REAL ID or Enhanced license for the first time, you have to go in person. Since May 2025, a REAL ID, Enhanced license, or passport is required to board domestic flights, so renewal is a natural moment to upgrade.²

When You Can Renew

The renewal window opens 12 months before your license expires. If you miss it, you have up to two years after the expiration date to renew without retaking the written or road tests.¹ Important boundary: that two-year window is for the paperwork, not for driving. You cannot legally drive during any period when your license is expired.

If your license has been expired more than two years, the shortcut closes. You’ll have to apply for a learner permit, pass the written knowledge exam, complete a vision screening, and take a road test, the same as a first-time applicant.

One exception to the 12-month rule: if you’re converting a Standard license to a REAL ID or Enhanced license, you can apply for renewal earlier than the normal window.³

Renewal Fees

What you pay depends on your license class and where you live. For an eight-year renewal:

Class D or DJ (standard operator): $64.50, or $80.50 with the MCTD surcharge
Class E (taxi, livery, limousine): $112.50, or $128.50 with the MCTD surcharge
Class M or MJ (motorcycle): $72.50, or $88.50 with the MCTD surcharge

If you hold a combined class such as DM, add $8 to the fee above.⁴

The Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District (MCTD) surcharge applies to residents of the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, and the counties of Dutchess, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester. It runs $1 for every six months the license is valid, or $16 on an eight-year renewal.⁴

Upgrading to an Enhanced Driver License adds $30 to the base fee.⁵

The Vision Test

Every renewal requires a vision test showing at least 20/40 acuity in one or both eyes, with or without corrective lenses.⁶ There are three ways to satisfy it.

The fastest is the DMV Online Vision Registry. Visit any eye care provider enrolled in the registry and they submit your results electronically. If you plan to renew online, this is the route to use, because the DMV system needs your results already on file.⁷

If your provider isn’t in the registry, ask them to complete a Vision Test Report (Form MV-619). Bring it to a DMV office or mail it with your application.⁶ You can also take the vision test at the DMV during an in-person visit.

If your provider already submitted results through the registry, you don’t need to include a paper MV-619 when you renew by mail.⁷

How to Renew

Online

Renewing through MyDMV is the fastest option for most people. You need a NY.gov ID account, which is free to create if you don’t already have one.⁸ The system pulls up your license, confirms your vision test results from the Online Vision Registry, and takes payment. Your document type stays the same. A Standard renews as a Standard, and a REAL ID renews as a REAL ID.⁴

By Mail

Send your completed renewal notice (or Form MV-44 if you didn’t get a notice), a Vision Test Report (MV-619) if your provider isn’t in the registry, and a check or money order payable to “Commissioner of Motor Vehicles” to:

Confirm the fee before mailing. An incorrect payment sends the package back and adds weeks to the process. Mail renewal, like online, keeps your current document type. You can’t switch from Standard to REAL ID by mail.

In Person

Walk into any DMV office with your documents, fill out the application, take the vision test if needed, and pay. The DMV strongly recommends reserving an appointment online. Offices with long wait times may only admit people who have one.⁹

When You Have to Renew in Person

Certain situations lock you out of online and mail renewal. You must visit a DMV office if you:

Are upgrading from a Standard license to a REAL ID or Enhanced license for the first time
Hold a commercial driver license (CDL)
Have a temporary visitor date on your license
Want to change your license class
Have never been issued a Social Security Number
Want to update your photo

The first item trips up a lot of people. If you’ve been putting off the REAL ID upgrade, know that it cannot be done remotely; you have to show original documents in person.⁴ Once you already have a REAL ID or Enhanced license, future renewals can go through the online or mail channels.³

Documents You’ll Need

For a straight Standard renewal where nothing about your identity has changed, the paperwork is minimal. The DMV mails you a renewal notice (Form MV-2) about a month before expiration. Fill it out and use it as your application. If you didn’t get a notice, use Form MV-44 instead.⁴ Either form asks for your Social Security Number, which the DMV uses for identity verification and information sharing with other states.¹⁰

Upgrading to a REAL ID

Upgrading during renewal takes significantly more documentation. Bring all of the following to a DMV office:

Proof of identity and date of birth: a U.S. passport, birth certificate issued by a state or local government, certificate of naturalization, or consular report of birth abroad
Proof of Social Security Number: your Social Security card, or your SSN printed on the MV-44 application
Two proofs of New York State residency: bank statements, utility bills, pay stubs, a current NY license, or other documents showing your name and address (P.O. boxes are not accepted)

Non-citizens must also provide proof of lawful status, such as a Permanent Resident Card, foreign passport with valid visa, or Employment Authorization Document.¹¹ The DMV’s ID-44 guide lists every acceptable document and the point value assigned to each. Bring more than the minimum in case something doesn’t scan or is rejected.

Enhanced Driver License

An Enhanced Driver License is both a REAL ID and proof of citizenship for land and sea border crossings with Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. It takes the same documents as a REAL ID, plus proof of U.S. citizenship specifically. A foreign passport or Permanent Resident Card won’t qualify. You also have to provide your Social Security card; the number written on the application alone is not enough for an Enhanced credential.¹¹

After You Submit

However you renew, you get a temporary document that keeps you legal to drive for 60 days while the permanent card is printed and mailed.⁴ Online applicants can download and print a PDF right away. In-person and mail applicants get a paper receipt. Either one is a valid license. Keep it with your old card until the new one arrives.

The DMV notes that higher-than-normal volumes sometimes delay delivery. If 60 days pass and you still don’t have the permanent card, contact the DMV rather than continuing to drive on an expired temporary.

Driving on an Expired License

Driving on an expired license in New York is a violation under Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 509. If the license expired more than 60 days ago, the fine runs from $75 to $300, with up to 15 days in jail. Within the first 60 days after expiration, the maximum fine drops to $40 and there’s no jail risk.¹²

So while you can technically renew up to two years after expiration without retesting, you cannot drive during that window without risking a ticket. Renew before your expiration date, or stop driving until the new license is in hand.
