Renew Your NYS Driver’s License: Online, by Mail, or In Person

A New York driver license is good for eight years, and you can renew it online, by mail, or at a DMV office anytime from one year before your expiration date to two years after. The fee for a standard Class D license is $64.50, or $80.50 if you live in the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District. Most drivers who already hold the license type they want can finish the whole thing online in a few minutes.

When You Can Renew

The renewal window runs three years: up to twelve months early, and up to twenty-four months late. Renewing early or a little late inside that window does not shorten your new eight-year term or change your fee.1New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Renew a Driver License The DMV mails a renewal notice to the address on file before your expiration date, so if you have moved, fix your address first.

Once a license has been expired for two years, you cannot renew it at all. You have to apply for an original license from scratch, which means the written test, the pre-licensing course, and the road test all over again.1New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Renew a Driver License Drivers whose licenses are currently suspended or revoked cannot use the standard renewal process; a revoked license requires approval from the DMV’s Driver Improvement Unit before you can apply again.2New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Pick Your License Type First

Federal REAL ID enforcement has been in effect since May 7, 2025. A standard New York license is no longer accepted for boarding domestic flights or entering federal buildings.3Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID You still have three choices at renewal:

  • A standard license is valid for driving in every state but will not get you through TSA screening. It carries no extra fee and no extra documents.
  • A REAL ID meets the federal standard for airports and federal facilities. It costs nothing extra, but you must appear in person at a DMV office with original documents proving your legal name, date of birth, Social Security status, and two proofs of New York residency.4New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Enhanced or REAL ID
  • An Enhanced license does everything a REAL ID does and also serves as a travel document at land and sea borders with Canada, Mexico, and some Caribbean countries. It costs an extra $30.5New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Enhanced or REAL ID1New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Renew a Driver License

If you already hold a REAL ID or Enhanced license, you can usually renew online. A first-time upgrade always requires an office visit. The DMV’s online document guide builds a personalized checklist of what to bring. Expired documents are rejected, and any name change since your last license needs proof (marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order) linking the old name to the new one.4New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Vision Test

Every renewal requires a vision test showing at least 20/40 acuity in one or both eyes, with or without corrective lenses.6New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Vision Requirements and Restrictions Three ways to satisfy it:

  • Take the screening at a DMV office when you visit in person.
  • Have a doctor, optometrist, pharmacist, or other enrolled provider submit your results through the Online Vision Registry. This is the smoothest path for online renewals because the DMV picks up the results automatically.7New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Online Vision Registry
  • Have a qualified provider (physician, optometrist, ophthalmologist, optician, physician assistant, registered nurse, or nurse practitioner) complete a paper MV-619 Vision Test Report to include with a mail renewal or bring to the office.6New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Vision Requirements and Restrictions

If your provider is enrolled in the Online Vision Registry, you do not need to mail an MV-619 with a paper renewal. The electronic result covers it.7New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Online Vision Registry

Renewing Online

Online is the fastest route and covers most standard renewals, along with existing REAL ID and Enhanced holders who are not changing their license type. You will need your nine-digit DMV ID number from your current license and the last four digits of your Social Security Number. Online renewal is not available if your current address is outside the United States.8New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Information for Military and Veterans

On the DMV website, open the license renewal transaction, confirm your address (fix it separately first if it is wrong), and pay by Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or Discover credit or debit card. PIN-required cards are not accepted.9New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. DMV Payment Methods When the transaction finishes, you can download and print a temporary license in PDF to use until your permanent card arrives.

Renewing by Mail

Mail works if you are not upgrading your license type. Use the renewal notice (form MV-2). If you never received one, download form MV-44, the Application for Permit, Driver License or Non-Driver ID Card, from the DMV website instead.1New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Renew a Driver License Pay by personal check or money order made out to “Commissioner of Motor Vehicles.” Do not send cash. Add a completed MV-619 unless your vision provider submitted results electronically. Mail everything to:

Renewing in Person

An office visit is required for a first-time REAL ID or Enhanced upgrade, and for anyone who cannot use the online or mail paths. Book a reservation through the DMV’s scheduling system; walk-ins face longer waits at most offices. Bring your renewal notice (or a completed MV-44), your current license, and the identity, name, date of birth, Social Security, and residency documents on your personalized document guide if you are upgrading.4New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Enhanced or REAL ID

Payment in an office is the most flexible: cash, personal check, money order, credit or debit card without a PIN, and mobile payment through Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay. You can even split payment between cash and check.9New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. DMV Payment Methods

Fees

The eight-year renewal fee depends on class and county:

  • Class D or DJ (standard operator): $64.50, or $80.50 with the MCTD surcharge.
  • Class E (taxi/livery): $112.50, or $128.50 with MCTD.
  • Class M or MJ (motorcycle): $72.50, or $88.50 with MCTD.
  • Class A, B, or C (commercial): $164.50, or $180.50 with MCTD.

Add $8.00 for a combined class such as DM (standard plus motorcycle). Add $30.00 for an Enhanced license. A REAL ID upgrade adds nothing. The MCTD surcharge applies if you live in any of the five New York City boroughs or in Dutchess, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk, or Westchester County. It works out to $1.00 per six months of validity, so $16.00 across the eight-year term.1New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Renew a Driver License

Update Your Address First

New York law requires you to notify the DMV of a move within 10 days. Changing your address with the U.S. Postal Service does not update DMV records; you have to tell each agency separately.10New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Change Your Address Your new card gets mailed to whatever address the DMV has, so an outdated address means an outdated destination.

You can update your address online or by mailing form MV-232. You do not need to order a new physical card for the address alone; you can write the new address on the back of your current license in the meantime.10New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Change Your Address If renewal is close, update first and then renew, so the new card prints with the correct address.

After You Renew

However you renew, you can download and print a temporary license in PDF. It is valid for 60 days.1New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Renew a Driver License The permanent card comes by mail. The DMV cautions that higher-than-normal volume can delay delivery. If the 60-day temporary is close to expiring and the card still has not arrived, contact the DMV to check status or request an extension.

If You Drive Past Your Expiration Date

Driving on an expired license violates New York Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 509. Within the first 60 days after expiration, the maximum fine is $40. After 60 days, the fine range jumps to $75 to $300, with a possible jail sentence of up to 15 days. Mandatory court surcharges apply on top. Commercial drivers operating vehicles for hire without the proper license face $225 to $450 for a first offense and up to $1,500 for a third or later offense within ten years.11New York State Senate. New York Code VAT 509 – Violations

CDL Medical Certification Is a Separate Deadline

Commercial drivers have a requirement that runs on its own clock. Federal rules require every CDL holder to file a medical self-certification with the DMV identifying the type of commercial driving they do, and most CDL holders also need a current U.S. Department of Transportation Medical Examiner’s Certificate on file. The exam must come from a medical examiner on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s National Registry.12New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. CDL Medical Certification

If your medical certificate lapses, the DMV changes your status to “not certified” and sends a downgrade warning notice. You have 56 days from that notice to submit a new certificate before the downgrade takes effect.12New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. CDL Medical Certification This deadline can hit independently of your license expiration, so track both.

Military Members and Overseas Addresses

Active-duty military stationed outside New York get an automatic extension of driving privileges for the entire active-service period plus six months after discharge or separation. The standard two-year late-renewal grace period runs after that, so you have up to 30 months from discharge to renew without retesting. Provide your DD-214 (Certificate of Discharge) when you renew.8New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Information for Military and Veterans

If your current address is outside the United States, online renewal is not available. Renew by mail to the Utica address with a check or money order and either a completed MV-619 or Online Vision Registry results submitted by your provider.
