You can renew your Washington driver’s license online, by phone, or at a Department of Licensing office. A standard six-year renewal costs $61, and an eight-year renewal is $81. Most drivers under 70 qualify for online renewal, but only if their last renewal was done in person. If you renewed electronically last time, you have to visit an office this cycle.
Who Can Renew Online
Washington alternates renewal methods by law. You can renew by mail or online only if your last renewal was done in person.1Washington State Legislature. You must renew in person if any of these apply:
- You are 70 or older. An office visit is required regardless of how you renewed last time. Appointments are preferred but not required.
- You have a known vision condition or the DOL has flagged your record for a vision screening.
- You need a new photograph. Drivers must supply an updated photo at least every 16 years, or every 8 years if you’re under 30.
If your license has been expired for more than eight years, you cannot renew at all. The state treats you as a new applicant, which means retaking the written and driving exams.2Washington State Department of Licensing. Renew Driver License
Renewing Online or by Phone
The DOL’s License Express portal handles electronic renewals. You can create an account or use the quick renewal option without logging in.3Washington State Department of Licensing. License Express Registration Have your current license number and Social Security number ready. The system will walk you through confirming your address, uploading a photo if one is required, and paying the fee. A 3% card payment fee is added to online transactions.
Since January 2023, the DOL has required an updated photo with each electronic renewal unless your photo on file is less than 10 years old and you cannot meet the photo submission requirements.1Washington State Legislature. Phone renewal is available if you’re under 70 and last renewed in person. Mail renewal is limited to people the DOL has sent a specific letter inviting that option.2Washington State Department of Licensing. Renew Driver License
When you renew online or by mail, the DOL can waive the vision test if you self-certify that your acuity meets the 20/40 standard and you have no other vision problems.4Washington State Legislature. WAC 308-104-010
Renewing at a Licensing Office
Book an appointment through the DOL’s online scheduling tool. Walk-ins are accepted, but wait times can be significantly longer without an appointment.2Washington State Department of Licensing. Renew Driver License Bring your current license.
At the office, a technician takes your new photograph and administers a vision screening. The test checks that your acuity is at least 20/40, corrected or uncorrected.4Washington State Legislature. WAC 308-104-010 If you wear glasses or contacts, bring them. Failing the screening doesn’t end your visit; the DOL may add a corrective lens restriction or ask you to get an eye exam from a doctor before reapplying.
Fees
Washington charges a flat per-year fee for driver’s licenses.5Washington State Legislature. Washington Code RCW 46.20.181 – Expiration Date, Renewal, Fees, Penalty Current renewal costs are:
- Standard license, 6 years: $61
- Standard license, 8 years: $81
- Enhanced Driver License (EDL), 6 years: $103
- Enhanced Driver License (EDL), 8 years: $137
Renew more than 60 days after your license expires and the DOL adds a $10 late fee to each tier. A standard six-year renewal becomes $71, an eight-year $91. An EDL runs $113 (six years) or $147 (eight years).6Washington State Department of Licensing. Driver Licensing Fees
Endorsements add to the base cost. A standard license with a motorcycle endorsement is $91 for six years or $121 for eight. Commercial license renewals start at $163 for six years.6Washington State Department of Licensing. Driver Licensing Fees
Standard License vs. Enhanced Driver License
Renewal is a natural time to decide whether you want the standard card or an Enhanced Driver License. Since May 7, 2025, TSA will not accept a driver’s license at airport security unless it’s REAL ID compliant or an approved alternative.7Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID Frequently Asked Questions Washington’s standard driver’s license is not REAL ID compliant. It carries a “federal limits apply” marking and will not get you past a TSA checkpoint by itself.
Two options work at the airport:
- Washington’s Enhanced Driver License (EDL), which DHS and TSA have accepted as a REAL ID alternative since 2018. It also works for land and sea border crossings to Canada and Mexico. First-time EDL applications require an in-person office visit and proof of U.S. citizenship, such as a birth certificate or passport, plus your Social Security number. - Keeping your standard license and using a U.S. passport, passport card, military ID, or tribal photo ID at TSA checkpoints.
If you never fly and don’t need to enter federal facilities, a standard license works fine for driving and everyday identification.
Renewing From Out of State
If your license will expire while you’re living or traveling outside Washington, you don’t do a full renewal by mail. You request a 12-month extension using the DOL’s Driver License Extension Form.9Washington State Department of Licensing. Renew or Extend Your Driver License While Out of State The extension costs $5 and starts on your license expiration date. The DOL mails the extension document to your out-of-state address, and you carry it with your expired license as proof of valid driving privileges.
The extension only buys time. You still need to complete a full renewal once you return to Washington or before the extension runs out. You can also renew online from out of state at the standard fee if you’re otherwise eligible.6Washington State Department of Licensing. Driver Licensing Fees
What Happens If Your License Expires
Driving on an expired license in Washington is a traffic infraction, not a criminal charge, provided you have the expired license on you and your driving privileges aren’t otherwise suspended.10Washington State Legislature. Washington Code RCW 46.20.015 – Driving Without a License, Traffic Infraction, When If you have no license on you at all, the situation can be charged as a misdemeanor.
The renewal timeline breaks down like this:
- Within 60 days after expiration: renew at the standard fee with no penalty.
- After 60 days: pay the $10 late surcharge on top of the regular fee.
- After 8 years: your renewal option is gone. The state treats you as a new driver, and you’ll have to pass the written and driving exams again.
Active-duty military members get an automatic grace period. Your license stays valid throughout your service and for 90 days after discharge, so renewal while deployed isn’t a concern.
