To renew your Florida medical marijuana card, log in to the Medical Marijuana Use Registry at mmuregistry.flhealth.gov within 45 days of your card’s expiration date, confirm your residency, submit a photo, and pay the $75 application fee through the online payment system.1Office of Medical Marijuana Use. MMUR Identification Cards Online applications take about 10 business days to process. You can also renew by mail using a paper application.
When to Start
The Office of Medical Marijuana Use only accepts renewals filed within 45 days of your card’s expiration date. File earlier and the state can hold the application; file after expiration and you’re without a valid card while processing runs.1Office of Medical Marijuana Use. MMUR Identification Cards
Your expiration date shows on the registry dashboard when you log in, so there’s no need to guess. Set a reminder for the day that 45-day window opens. If you plan to mail a paper application, add another three to five days for postal delivery on top of the standard processing time.
What to Have Ready Before You Log In
Get your documents together before you start the application. A mid-form scramble is where errors creep in.
Proof of Florida Residency
Florida law requires qualified patients and caregivers to be state residents.2Florida House of Representatives. Florida Code 381.986 – Medical Use of Marijuana The simplest proof is a valid Florida driver’s license or state-issued ID. The name and address on that ID must match what’s in your registry profile. Mismatches between the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles records and the registry are a common reason applications get pulled for manual review.
Seasonal residents without a Florida driver’s license need two documents showing they reside in the state at least 31 consecutive days each year. Acceptable items include a residential lease or mortgage statement, a utility hookup or service order, and mail from a financial institution.1Office of Medical Marijuana Use. A Photo
Online, the registry can pull your existing photo directly from the FLHSMV database, which is the fastest option because it’s automatically verified. You can also upload your own photo through the portal. For a paper application, include a full-face, passport-style color photograph, 2×2 inches, taken within the last 90 days against a plain white or off-white background. No hats or sunglasses.3Florida Department of Health. Medical Marijuana Use Registry Identification Card Application Instructions
Renewing Online Through the Registry
Sign in at mmuregistry.flhealth.gov with your registered email and password. From the dashboard, open the “Your Card” tab and start a renewal. The system pulls information from your existing profile and your physician’s registry entry, so you aren’t re-entering everything.
Confirm your residency details, choose how to handle the photo, and electronically sign the application by typing your first and last name exactly as they appear on your profile. After you submit, a button labeled “Click Here to Pay Online” sends you to the Bill2Pay payment system. Credit cards and electronic checks are accepted. A $2.75 convenience fee is added to the $75 application fee for every online transaction, so your total comes to $77.75.1Office of Medical Marijuana Use. MMUR Identification Cards
Renewing by Mail
Download the Patient Renewal Application (or Caregiver Renewal Application) from the Office of Medical Marijuana Use website. Check the “Renewal Application” box on page three, and fill in every field in legible print. Include your passport-style photo and copies of your residency documents.
Enclose a $75 check or money order made out to the Florida Department of Health. Write your registry ID number and date of birth on the check. Cash is not accepted. Mail the package to:1Office of Medical Marijuana Use. MMUR Identification Cards

A wrong payee, missing fee, or incomplete field will get the whole package sent back without processing.
What Happens After You Submit
Online applications take an average of 10 business days to approve. Paper applications need additional time for postal delivery on both ends.1Office of Medical Marijuana Use. MMUR Identification Cards You can track status through the registry portal as it moves from “Applied” to “Approved.”
Once approved, the Office of Medical Marijuana Use emails you an approval notice. That email functions as a temporary identification card. Dispensaries verify eligibility by looking up your profile in the MMUR database, and as long as your status shows active and approved, they can legally dispense products. You don’t have to wait for the plastic card to fill an order. The physical card arrives by mail, typically within 7 to 10 business days after approval.
If Your Card Expires
Florida law gives no grace period. The day the card lapses, the legal protections of being a registered patient are gone.
Possessing cannabis with an expired card is treated the same as possessing it without a card. Under Florida law, possession of 20 grams or less of cannabis flower without a valid card is a first-degree misdemeanor. Possession of more than 20 grams, or possession of cannabis concentrates and extracts in any amount, is a third-degree felony.4The Florida Legislature. Florida Code 893.13 – Prohibited Acts; Penalties Renewing after being charged does not retroactively fix the problem; the state looks at your status at the time of the offense, not the court date.
If your card is valid but you can’t produce it when a law enforcement officer asks, that’s a second-degree misdemeanor on its own. The charge can be dismissed if you present a valid card before your court appearance, but the arrest still happens.2Florida House of Representatives. Florida Code 381.986 – Medical Use of Marijuana
Don’t Forget the Second Clock: Your Physician’s Certification
Your registry card and your physician’s certification run on different schedules, and this trips people up. The card expires annually and is renewed through the state. The physician’s certification covers a maximum of three 70-day supply periods, lasting up to 210 days before you need another appointment with your qualified physician.2Florida House of Representatives. Florida Code 381.986 – Medical Use of Marijuana
If the certification lapses, you lose dispensary access even when the state card is still active. Plan to see your physician roughly every seven months, and handle the card renewal once a year through the registry.
Caregivers: One Extra Step
Caregivers follow the same renewal process as patients, with the same $75 fee and the same 45-day window. The addition: a caregiver who is not a close relative of the patient must complete a Level 2 background screening at the time of renewal. Caregivers who are close relatives submit a Close Relative Acknowledgment Form instead and skip the screening.5Office of Medical Marijuana Use. Caregivers
For the screening, email the Caregiver Background Screening Acknowledgment and Information form to MMUR_Applications@FLHealth.gov before you get fingerprinted, then visit a Livescan Service Provider and submit prints using ORI number FL924890Z.
