Replace a Lost NJ Driver’s License: Online, In Person, or Out of State

To replace a lost New Jersey driver’s license, order a duplicate through the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission for $11. Most drivers can do it online in a few minutes; if you can’t, you can visit an MVC agency in person or, if you’re temporarily out of state, apply by mail. Either way, the new card is printed centrally and mailed to you, since MVC agencies no longer print licenses at the counter.¹

Replace It Online

The online portal is the fastest route and works for most people. You qualify as long as your license hasn’t expired, your driving privileges aren’t suspended, and you don’t need to change any information on the card, such as your name or address.¹ You don’t have to gather identity documents for this method; the system verifies you against information already on file.

To finish the online application, have these ready:

Your driver’s license number
Your Social Security number
A valid email address
A credit or debit card for the $11 fee

Once you submit and pay, you can print an interim license valid for 30 days while you wait for the permanent card.² The permanent license typically arrives in the mail within about two weeks.¹ Print the interim license right away and keep it in your car.

Replace It In Person

If the online portal isn’t an option, because your license is expired, your information needs updating, or you’d rather handle it face to face, you can apply for a duplicate at any MVC licensing center. Schedule an appointment online before going; walk-ins mean long waits.¹

The 6 Points of ID

An in-person visit requires the MVC’s 6 Points of ID verification. Every identity document has a point value, and what you bring must add up to at least six points, including at least one primary document and at least one secondary document.³

A common way to reach six points:

A 4-point primary document such as a U.S. birth certificate (original or certified copy) or a U.S. passport that expired less than three years ago
A 3-point secondary document, which can include certain government-issued IDs
1-point documents such as a bank statement or a Social Security card (no more than two)

A workable combination is a U.S. passport (4 points), a Social Security card (1 point), and a bank statement (1 point). Every document must be an original or certified copy, with one exception: the MVC accepts a current NJ digital driver’s license as a 4-point primary document. Photocopies and screenshots are not accepted.⁴

Proof of Address and Social Security Number

Beyond the six identity points, bring a document proving you live in New Jersey. Acceptable options include a utility bill, a bank statement issued within the last 60 days, or a current lease showing your name and New Jersey address. You also need a verifiable Social Security number.³

At the Agency

You’ll fill out an application and have a new photo taken. The $11 fee can be paid by credit card, debit card, cash, check, or money order.⁵ You leave with an interim license valid for 30 days, good for driving and as proof of licensure while you wait for the permanent card.⁶ No card is printed at the counter; all licenses are produced centrally and mailed.¹

Replace It From Out of State

If you’re living outside New Jersey temporarily and can’t visit an MVC agency, you can request a duplicate by mail using form GU-11. Along with the completed form, include:⁷

A letter explaining why you can’t visit an MVC agency and when you plan to return to New Jersey
Photocopies (certified if possible) of documents totaling 6 points of ID, plus proof of your New Jersey address
Your current out-of-state mailing address so the interim license can be sent to you
A check or money order for $11; do not send cash

The application includes a sworn statement, so you may need to have it notarized, which adds a small fee depending on the state you’re in.

Driving While You Wait

The interim license, whether printed from the online portal or handed to you at an agency, is legally valid for driving for 30 days.² Keep it with you when you drive.

Losing the physical card doesn’t mean you’re unlicensed, and the distinction matters if you get pulled over. If you have a valid license but can’t produce the card, that’s a failure to exhibit, a $150 fine that the judge can dismiss entirely if you later show up to court with proof that your license was valid on the day of the stop.⁸ Driving without being licensed at all is a separate offense carrying a $500 fine on a first offense.⁹

If Your License Was Stolen

File a police report first. New Jersey law requires local police to take an identity theft report if you reasonably believe you’re a victim.¹⁰ The report number is what banks and credit bureaus will ask for when you place fraud alerts, and it creates a paper trail if someone tries to use your identity.

A stolen license carries your full name, date of birth, and address, which is enough for someone to try to open accounts in your name. Consider placing a fraud alert or credit freeze with the three major credit bureaus. The MVC replacement process itself is the same as for a lost license.

REAL ID and Your Replacement

One thing to know before you order: since May 7, 2025, a standard New Jersey driver’s license is no longer accepted for boarding domestic flights, entering federal buildings, or accessing nuclear facilities. You need either a REAL ID-compliant license or another federally accepted document such as a valid passport.¹¹ If the license you lost was a standard version, replacing it with another standard card keeps you in the same position at the airport.

A first-time REAL ID must be obtained in person; you can’t get one online until you’ve had one before. The fee is $35 instead of $24 for a standard license, and the identity documentation follows a different point scale, plus two proofs of New Jersey address and a verifiable Social Security number.¹² If you already had a REAL ID and lost it, you can order the duplicate online, and the replacement will also be a REAL ID.

Other Situations Worth Knowing

Changing Your Address at the Same Time

You can’t update your address during the duplicate process itself. New Jersey handles address changes as a separate online transaction. Process the address change first through the MVC website, then order your duplicate, and the new card will arrive with the updated address.¹³

Commercial Driver’s License

A CDL duplicate carries the same $11 fee, and the replacement steps are the same.⁵ CDL holders should check whether their employer requires separate notification when a license is lost or reissued, since many carriers have their own policies on top of state rules.
