Rhode Island License Verification: Agencies, Status, and Databases

To run a Rhode Island license verification, go to the online portal of the state agency that regulates the profession you’re checking, then search by name or license number. The state doesn’t use a single unified database. The Department of Health covers most healthcare and personal-service professions, the Department of Business Regulation covers trades and financial industries, and teachers and attorneys each have their own separate portal. All four are free and open to the public, and each returns the person’s license type, current status, and expiration date within a minute or two.

Figure Out Which Agency Regulates the Profession

Picking the wrong portal is the most common reason a verification search comes back empty. A real estate agent won’t appear in the Department of Health system, and a nurse won’t appear in the Department of Business Regulation system, even if both are fully licensed.

The Rhode Island Department of Health licenses a wide range of individuals and facilities: physicians, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, psychologists, social workers, physical and occupational therapists, chiropractors, veterinarians, cosmetologists and barbers, massage therapists, funeral directors, EMTs, dental hygienists, midwives, genetic counselors, and more. It also licenses hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living residences, and laboratories.

The Department of Business Regulation handles a different set: real estate professionals, contractors, insurance agents, banking institutions, securities dealers, design professionals, and accountants, along with the state fire marshal’s office.

Two professions sit outside both agencies. Teachers and school administrators are verified through the Rhode Island Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Attorneys are verified through the Rhode Island Judiciary.

Verifying a Healthcare or Health-Related License

The Department of Health’s lookup lives at healthri.mylicense.com/verification. No login is needed. You can search using any combination of these fields:

  • Profession (dropdown covering every profession the department licenses)
  • License Type (a narrower subcategory)
  • License Status (active, expired, and other statuses)
  • First Name and Last Name
  • License Number, which pulls up an exact record if you have it from a business card or invoice

Spelling matters. A single typo in the last name can return zero hits for someone who is in fact licensed. If you’re not sure of the spelling, try the last name alone, or search by profession plus city.

Clicking a name opens a profile with license type, status, issue date, and expiration date. Physicians get more detail: Rhode Island law requires the state medical board to publish public profiles with professional background information beyond basic license status.1Rhode Island General Assembly. Rhode Island Code 5-37-9.2 – Physician Profiles Public Access to Data That expanded profile applies to physicians only. For other health professions, the record confirms authorization and status but may not include the same depth of background.

Verifying a Trade or Business License

The Department of Business Regulation runs its lookup through a portal linked from dbr.ri.gov.2Department of Business Regulation. Lookup a License or Registration You can search by business or individual name, license type, or registration number, then click into a result for category, issue and expiration dates, and current standing.

Contractors deserve a closer look because Rhode Island law puts real weight on the check. No one may perform, offer, or bid on contractor work on a structure without a current, valid certificate of registration.3Justia. Rhode Island Code Title 5 Chapter 5-65 – Contractors Registration and Licensing Board Municipalities are prohibited from issuing building permits to unregistered contractors, and the fact that a permit was issued is not a defense if the contractor turns out to be unregistered. Contractor registrations last two years and require the contractor to carry public liability insurance, property damage insurance, and workers’ compensation insurance if they have employees.

Verifying a Teacher or an Attorney

For teachers and school administrators, use the Educator Verification Portal at ecert.ride.ri.gov/public, run by the Rhode Island Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.4Rhode Island Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Educator Verification Portal Search by name, school district, or certificate number to see certification status and subject-area qualifications.

For attorneys, the Rhode Island Judiciary provides a public search tool through the Supreme Court.5Rhode Island Judiciary. Attorney Search The court treats this as an informational service rather than an official court record. If you need a formal confirmation of standing or want to review disciplinary history, call the Supreme Court Disciplinary Board at (401) 823-5710.

Reading the Status Result

Every agency’s portal uses roughly the same vocabulary for license status, and the differences between those words matter.

An active license means the person is currently authorized to practice. An expired license has lapsed, often because the holder didn’t renew or stopped practicing. Renewal cycles vary: some Rhode Island licenses expire annually, while contractor registrations run two years.3Justia. Rhode Island Code Title 5 Chapter 5-65 – Contractors Registration and Licensing Board

A suspended license has been temporarily pulled, usually for a disciplinary reason or failure to meet an ongoing requirement. A revoked license has been permanently taken away. In both cases, the person cannot legally practice. Probation sits in the middle: the professional can work, but under specific restrictions or heightened oversight from the board.

Some profiles include a disciplinary actions section with links to documents describing past violations. Rhode Island licensing boards can impose fines, mandatory additional education, practice restrictions, and license revocation.6Rhode Island General Assembly. Rhode Island Code 5-95-11 – Discipline Complaints Disciplinary Actions Summary Suspension Grounds for Disciplinary Action Suspension and Revocation of Licenses A quick read of that section is worth the two minutes.

What Happens If You Don’t Check

Rhode Island law puts some of the consequences of hiring an unlicensed professional on the consumer, not just the practitioner.

The contractor registration statute is the clearest example. An unregistered contractor cannot file or maintain a mechanic’s lien, and cannot bring any legal claim in Rhode Island courts related to the work if they were unregistered when the contract was signed or the work was performed. That protects homeowners in one direction, but it also makes disputes harder to resolve through normal channels, because the contractor has less reason to cooperate when they can’t sue you either. Fines for contracting without registration start at up to $500 for a first offense and up to $950 for second and subsequent offenses.3Justia. Rhode Island Code Title 5 Chapter 5-65 – Contractors Registration and Licensing Board

Practicing a health-related profession without a license is a misdemeanor, and the attorney general or a local prosecutor can seek a court injunction to stop the unlicensed practice. The state can also pursue civil remedies. The Federal Trade Commission recommends checking with state or county agencies to confirm a professional holds a valid license and proof of insurance before hiring, particularly for home improvement work.7Federal Trade Commission. National Databases That Supplement a State Check

State portals confirm Rhode Island licensure. For professionals who may be registered in multiple states, a few national databases add useful context.

FINRA’s BrokerCheck at brokercheck.finra.org covers anyone who sells securities or provides investment advice, with employment history, qualifications, and disclosures like customer complaints or regulatory actions. If the person is a registered investment adviser rather than a broker, BrokerCheck sends you to the SEC’s Investment Adviser Public Disclosure database.8FINRA.org. NMLS Consumer Access at nmlsconsumeraccess.org covers mortgage loan originators and consumer finance companies. You can search by name, company, state, or NMLS ID to confirm a mortgage professional is authorized to operate in Rhode Island.9NMLS Consumer Access. NMLS Consumer Access Home

The National Provider Identifier Registry at npiregistry.cms.hhs.gov lists healthcare providers with active NPI numbers, their specialty, and their practice address. Important caveat: an NPI is not a license. The registry itself states that issuance of an NPI “does not ensure or validate that the Health Care Provider is Licensed or Credentialed.”10NPPES NPI Registry. The National Practitioner Data Bank, which tracks malpractice payments and adverse actions against healthcare providers, is not available to the public.11National Practitioner Data Bank. About Us
