A Ritchie County tax inquiry can be run three ways: through the Sheriff’s online tax portal, by phone to the Sheriff’s Tax Office, or in person at the Ritchie County Courthouse in Harrisville. Each channel will show you the current balance on a real estate or personal property account, confirm past payments, and flag any delinquency. The online portal is fastest; an in-person visit is what you want when a title company, lender, or attorney needs stamped proof.
What to Have Ready Before You Search
The lookup goes quickly if you bring the right identifiers. At minimum, have the owner’s full legal name as it appears on county records and the tax year you want to check.
For real estate, the cleanest search uses the Map and Parcel number. West Virginia formats it as a multi-segment code: a two-digit district number, a four-digit map number, a four-digit parcel number, and sometimes a suffix.1WV Property Viewer. WV Property Viewer The number appears on your deed and on any prior tax ticket. If you don’t have it, the Ritchie County Assessor’s online search will pull parcels by owner name or address.2Ritchie County Assessor’s Office. Ritchie County Assessor Property Record Search
For personal property, including vehicles, trailers, boats, and business equipment, you’ll want the account or ticket number printed on your last tax receipt. Hold onto those receipts. You will need them again at the DMV.
Running the Search Online
The Ritchie County Sheriff runs an online tax inquiry system that handles both lookups and payments.3Ritchie County Tax Inquiry. Ritchie County Tax Inquiry The Ritchie County Clerk’s website also links to it under “Online Payments.”4Ritchie County Clerk. Online Payments
Enter a parcel number, an account number, or an owner name. The system returns a summary showing whether the account is paid, unpaid, or delinquent. If money is owed, you’ll see the base tax plus any interest that has accumulated. Prior-year payment history is available too, which matters when you need to verify that an old bill was actually cleared before a closing or estate settlement. No account signup is required.
Calling or Visiting the Sheriff’s Tax Office
The Sheriff’s Tax Office sits inside the Ritchie County Courthouse at 115 East Main Street, Harrisville. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The phone line is 304-643-2164, extension 236, and staff can read your balance and next deadline over the phone.
Go in person when you need certified documentation. Title companies and lenders routinely require a stamped record showing the property is current on taxes before they’ll close a real estate transaction. Staff can also explain line items on a bill that don’t make sense on screen. Bring your parcel or account numbers so the clerk can pull the file without a hunt.
For law firms and banks handling mortgages or estate work, a written request by mail creates a formal paper trail. Include the property identifiers, the tax years you need verified, and a return address.
Deadlines and the 2.5 Percent Discount
Ritchie County property taxes come in two installments. For the 2026 tax year, the first half is due September 1, 2026, and the second half is due March 1, 2027. Paying before each deadline saves 2.5 percent on that installment.5West Virginia Tax Division. Property Tax Due Dates On a $1,000 installment, that’s $25 back. Worth running the inquiry a few weeks ahead.
Miss the deadline and the first-half payment becomes delinquent on October 1, 2026; the second half becomes delinquent on April 1, 2027. Interest then accrues at 9 percent per year until the balance is paid.5West Virginia Tax Division. Property Tax Due Dates
If the Inquiry Shows a Delinquency
A delinquent balance is more than a nuisance bill. Once taxes go delinquent, 9 percent interest starts running.5West Virginia Tax Division. Property Tax Due Dates By the following April, the Sheriff can publish a delinquency notice in a local newspaper. If the balance still isn’t paid by April 30, the Sheriff certifies the unpaid accounts to the State Auditor.
From there, the account heads toward a Sheriff’s tax lien sale, typically held in November, roughly 18 months after the original delinquency. The Sheriff auctions a lien against the property, not the property itself. The highest bidder pays the taxes owed and receives a lien certificate. The owner then has a redemption period lasting until April 1 of the following year to repay the lien holder for the taxes, interest, and fees. Miss that redemption date and the lien holder can apply for a tax deed and potentially take ownership.
A bill that went unpaid in 2025 could reach a lien sale by late 2026 and cost you the property by mid-2027. Catching a delinquency through a routine inquiry is far cheaper than redeeming after a sale.
Vehicle Registration Checks
West Virginia ties DMV renewals to personal property tax compliance, which is why many people run an inquiry before renewing plates. Before you can renew your registration, you must show a copy of your personal property tax receipt or provide an Affidavit of Assessor form (DMV-178-TR) from the County Assessor.6West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles. Registrations A one-year registration requires proof of payment for the previous tax year; a two-year registration requires proof for the previous two years.7West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles. If you moved to Ritchie County and never listed your vehicle with the Assessor, or if you paid real estate taxes but overlooked the personal property bill, the DMV will reject the renewal. Visit the Assessor’s office first to get the vehicle on the rolls, pay the outstanding personal property tax through the Sheriff’s office, and then take the receipt to the DMV.
When the Problem Isn’t the Bill but the Value
A tax inquiry tells you what’s owed. It won’t help you dispute how the property was valued. If the bill looks too high because the assessed value seems wrong, that’s a separate process with the County Commission sitting as the Board of Equalization and Review, which meets no later than February 1 of the tax year and must finish by the last day of February.8West Virginia Legislature. West Virginia Code 11-3-24 – Review and Equalization by County Commission Missing that February window locks in the value for another year.
