Rutherford County, NC Sales Tax Rate: 7% Breakdown and Exemptions

How the 7.00% Breaks Down

The 4.75% state portion is set by North Carolina General Statute ยง 105-164.4.2North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina General Statute 105-164.4 – Tax Imposed on Retailers and Certain Facilitators The 2.25% local share is made up of four separate local taxes authorized under Articles 39, 40, 42, and 46 of the state’s local sales tax statutes. The Article 46 piece adds 0.25% that not every North Carolina county charges, which is the reason Rutherford County’s combined rate reaches 7.00%.1North Carolina General Assembly. The exemption covers medications that federal law requires to be dispensed only on prescription, over-the-counter drugs sold on a prescription, and insulin.5North Carolina General Assembly. Vehicles, Boats, and Aircraft

Motor vehicles don’t get the regular sales tax at all. North Carolina charges a 3% Highway Use Tax each time a vehicle title is transferred, paid at the DMV rather than the dealership.6NCDOT. Vehicle Taxes A vehicle brought in from out of state and titled after more than 90 days of ownership is capped at $250.

Boats are taxed at a 3% state rate capped at $1,500. Aircraft are taxed at the 4.75% state rate capped at $2,500 per aircraft. Both are exempt from the local and transit portions of the sales tax, so the Rutherford County add-ons don’t apply to either.7NCDOR. Aircraft and Qualified Jet Engines
