Sales Tax in Williamsburg, VA: Rates, Meals, and Lodging

The sales tax in Williamsburg, VA is 7 percent on most retail purchases. That single rate is actually four separate taxes stacked together, and it is not the whole story: restaurant meals and hotel rooms carry additional local taxes, while groceries and prescription drugs are taxed at a much lower rate or not at all.

How the 7 Percent Rate Is Built

Every taxable retail sale in Williamsburg carries the same 7 percent combined rate. It comes from four layers:

For a shopper, none of that matters at the register. Multiply the price by 1.07 and that is your out-the-door cost. Businesses collect the whole 7 percent and remit it to Virginia Tax, which distributes each piece to the correct fund.

What Gets Taxed at a Lower Rate or Not at All

Groceries bought for home consumption skip the state, regional, and Historic Triangle portions entirely. Only the 1 percent local tax applies.3Virginia Code Commission. Prescription medicines and drugs dispensed by a licensed physician, dentist, optometrist, or other authorized provider are fully exempt.4Virginia Code Commission. 23 VAC 10-210-940 – Medicines, Drugs, Eyeglasses, and Related Items The exemption also reaches durable medical equipment purchased for personal use, including wheelchairs, prosthetic devices, crutches, insulin supplies, and diabetes testing equipment.

Nonprofits do not get an automatic pass. A nonprofit has to apply to Virginia Tax and qualify under Virginia Code Section 58.1-609.11 before it can make tax-free purchases.5Virginia Tax. Restaurant Meals: Effectively 13.5 Percent

Williamsburg adds a 6.5 percent meals tax on top of the 7 percent sales tax for any prepared food or beverage sold for immediate consumption.6City of Williamsburg. The meals tax reaches broadly. A sit-down dinner, a deli sandwich, and a coffee drink all qualify. Grocery items you cook at home do not. Vending machine sales are generally excluded from the local meals tax, though standard sales tax still applies to what comes out of the machine.7Virginia Code Commission. Hotels, Vacation Rentals, and Campgrounds

Anyone staying at a hotel, motel, inn, bed-and-breakfast, vacation rental, or campground in Williamsburg pays a 7 percent transient lodging tax on the room charge, plus a flat $2 per room per night.8Williamsburg, VA. Code of Ordinances – Transient Lodging Tax, Section 18-237 Half of the $2 nightly fee supports the Historic Triangle Marketing Fund; the other half stays with the city.

The $2 charge does not apply to travel campground sites, and it drops off if the same person occupies a room continuously for 30 or more days. The 7 percent portion applies to stays of 90 consecutive days or fewer. Hotel employees working at least 20 hours a week and living on-site are not treated as transients.

The August Sales Tax Holiday

Virginia holds a three-day sales tax holiday on the first full weekend of August each year. In 2026 it runs Friday, August 7 through Sunday, August 9. Qualifying items are exempt from the entire 7 percent combined rate, so the effective tax during the holiday is zero. Eligible categories and price caps:

  • Clothing and footwear priced $100 or less per item
  • School supplies priced $20 or less
  • Portable generators priced $1,000 or less
  • Energy Star and WaterSense products priced $2,500 or less, for personal home use
  • Gas-powered chainsaws priced $350 or less, plus chainsaw accessories and other specified hurricane preparedness items priced $60 or less

Participation is mandatory for Virginia retailers, so every store in Williamsburg honors it.

If You Are Collecting the Tax

Any business making retail sales in Williamsburg has to register with Virginia Tax before it starts collecting. Registration is free and done online.10Virginia Tax. Returns are due by the 20th of the month after the reporting period, and the tax must be remitted with the return. Most businesses file monthly; some qualify for quarterly filing. Willful failure to collect or remit is not just a business problem.
