To get or renew a driver’s license in San Antonio, you book an appointment at a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) office, bring proof of identity, Social Security, Texas residency, and vehicle insurance, and pay $33 for a standard eight-year license.1Department of Public Safety. Driver License Fees San Antonio driver’s license requirements are set by the state, so they are the same at every local office, but every office in the area operates by appointment only.2Department of Public Safety. Documents to Bring
Before the appointment, fill out Form DL-14A, the Texas driver license application. It is on the DPS website or at any office.3Department of Public Safety. Texas Driver License or Identification Card Application The form covers height, weight, eye color, and medical questions tied to safe driving.
Then gather the following:
- Proof of identity and citizenship or lawful presence: an original or certified birth certificate, or an unexpired U.S. passport.
- Your Social Security card itself, not just the number.
- Two documents showing Texas residency with your name and current address. At least one has to confirm you have lived in Texas for 30 days or more. A utility bill dated within 180 days, a mortgage statement, a current lease, a Texas voter registration card, or a bank statement all qualify.4Department of Public Safety. - Your current Texas vehicle registration receipt or title.
- Proof of insurance on any vehicle you own.5Texas.gov. Texas Driver Licenses and IDs, Renewals, and Replacements
If you cannot come up with two residency documents, DPS may let you complete a Texas Residency Affidavit.4Department of Public Safety. Texas Residency Requirement for Driver Licenses and ID Cards If you are turning in a valid license from another state, you still need residency proof, but the 30-day requirement is waived.
Booking a San Antonio Appointment
Every San Antonio DPS office handles driver license services by appointment only, scheduled through the online system at txdpsscheduler.com. You pick the office, the service type, and an available time.2Department of Public Safety. Driver License Services – Appointments The San Antonio area has several offices, including locations on Pat Booker Road and in Leon Valley. If your preferred office is booked, the scheduler shows openings at other nearby offices.
Save the confirmation number and bring it with you. If you show up without an appointment, a self-service kiosk at the office lets you try for a same-day slot or book a later one, though same-day availability is not guaranteed at busier San Antonio locations.2Department of Public Safety. What Happens at the Office
Check in at the kiosk using your confirmation. A staff member reviews your documents, then you move through the following:
- A vision screening. If you wear corrective lenses, bring them; a restriction gets added to the license if you need them to pass.
- Thumbprint and photo capture for the card and the state database.
- A computerized knowledge test on Texas traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving. The Texas Driver Handbook (Form DL-7) is free on the DPS site.6Department of Public Safety. Apply for a Texas Driver License
- A driving skills test. You supply a safe, insured vehicle. The evaluator rides along for parallel parking, lane changes, and intersection work. The road test can also be taken through a DPS-approved third-party provider.
Pass both tests, pay the fee, and you leave with a temporary paper license. The permanent card arrives by mail, usually within a few weeks.
Fees
- Ages 18 to 84, new or renewal: $33, valid for eight years.
- Age 85 and older, new or renewal: $9, valid for two years.1Department of Public Safety. Driver License Fees
Each fee includes a $1 administrative surcharge, which is waived if you renew by mail. San Antonio offices take credit cards, cash, checks, and money orders.1Department of Public Safety. Driver License Fees
Renewing Your License
You can renew up to two years before expiration or up to two years after. Once a license has been expired more than two years, it cannot be renewed and you have to apply for a new one.7Department of Public Safety. Renew Your Texas DL, CDL, Motorcycle License or ID
Online Renewal
Online renewal is the fastest route, but you have to meet every one of these conditions:
- You renewed in person last time. You cannot renew online twice in a row.
- You hold a Class C, M, or CM license, or a CDL without a hazardous materials endorsement.
- Your license expires within two years or has been expired less than two years.
- You are under 79.
- You are a U.S. citizen with a Social Security number on file.
- Your license is not suspended, revoked, or otherwise restricted.
- Your vision and health have not changed significantly since the last renewal.7Department of Public Safety. Renew Your Texas DL, CDL, Motorcycle License or ID
In-Person Renewal
If online renewal is off the table, book a San Antonio appointment and bring your application, proof of identity, and proof of citizenship or lawful presence if it is not already on your record. You will do a vision exam, a thumbprint, and a new photo.
REAL ID for Air Travel and Federal Buildings
A standard Texas license is enough to drive. REAL ID matters only for federal purposes. Since May 2025, non-compliant licenses have been rejected at TSA checkpoints, and starting February 1, 2026, travelers without a REAL ID or acceptable alternative like a passport pay a $45 fee for TSA’s ConfirmID identity verification, with boarding still not guaranteed.8Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint
REAL ID is also required for entry to most federal facilities, with exceptions for buildings that do not normally check ID, and it is never needed to apply for or receive federal benefits like Social Security or VA services.9Department of Homeland Security. ID Requirements for Federal Facilities The documents needed for a REAL ID are the same ones listed above. If your current card is not REAL ID-compliant, you can upgrade at your next renewal or by ordering a replacement. A compliant card has a gold star in the upper-right corner.10Texas.gov. Texas REAL ID
Drivers Under 18
Texas uses a graduated system in two phases for teen drivers.11Department of Public Safety. Graduated Driver License (GDL) and Hardship License
Learner License
Teens hold the learner license for at least six months before they can move up. A licensed adult has to be in the vehicle the entire time the teen is driving. Any suspension during this phase adds to the six-month wait.
Provisional License
At 16, after the six-month learner period and a state-approved driver education course covering classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction, a teen can apply for a provisional license. They also complete the Impact Texas Teen Driver (ITTD) program. Three restrictions apply until age 18:
- No more than one passenger under 21 unless the passenger is a family member.
- No driving between midnight and 5:00 a.m. except for work, school, or an emergency.
- No wireless device use while driving, including hands-free setups.11Department of Public Safety. Graduated Driver License (GDL) and Hardship License
In limited hardship situations, a teen as young as 15 can apply for a Minor Restricted Driver License, which requires meeting every standard requirement except the six-month learner period. A hardship license expires on the applicant’s next birthday.
Replacing a Lost or Stolen License
A lost or damaged license can be replaced online without a trip to an office. You will need your license number, date of birth, the last four digits of your Social Security number, and the audit number from your most recently issued card.12Department of Public Safety. Replace Your Driver License, Commercial Driver License or ID Card The audit number is printed on the old card and DPS cannot look it up, so without it you have to go in person.
If the license was stolen and used fraudulently, file a police report first and bring a copy to your appointment. Staff can then decide whether a new license number is needed to protect your identity.
Address Changes
When you move inside Texas, update your address online through the DPS website; the same tool handles emergency contacts.13Department of Public Safety. Driver License State law gives you 30 days from the move. The license is not revoked for missing that window, but a wrong address causes trouble with official mail, insurance claims, and voter records.
Veteran Designation
Texas veterans can add a “VETERAN” designation to a license at no extra charge when applying new or renewing. Eligibility requires an honorable discharge, or a general discharge under honorable conditions, from the Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marines, Navy, or Texas National Guard.14Department of Public Safety. Driver License and Identification Services for Veterans
Accepted proof includes a DD-214, DD-215, NGB-22, a VA proof-of-service letter, a VA disability letter, or a Veterans Identification Card. Adding the designation to an existing license without other changes costs the standard duplicate license fee unless you qualify for a disabled veteran fee exemption.14Department of Public Safety. Penalties for Driving Without a License
Texas law requires anyone driving on a public road to hold a valid license.15State of Texas. Texas Code Transportation 521.021 – License Required Penalties climb with repeat offenses:
- First offense: a misdemeanor with a fine up to $200.
- Second offense within a year: a fine between $25 and $200.
- Third or later offense within a year of the second conviction: a fine of $25 to $500, jail time of 72 hours to six months, or both.
- Causing a serious or fatal collision while also driving without insurance: a Class A misdemeanor.16State of Texas. Texas Code Transportation 521.025 – License to Be Carried and Exhibited on Demand, Criminal Penalty
One defense exists for drivers who had a valid license but did not have it on them at the time: you can present the license in court and the charge may be dismissed, though the court can still assess an administrative fee of up to $10.16State of Texas. Texas Code Transportation 521.025 – License to Be Carried and Exhibited on Demand, Criminal Penalty
Driving on a suspended license is a separate, heavier offense. A first violation is a Class C misdemeanor, bumping up to a Class B if you have a prior conviction for the same offense, were driving without insurance, or the suspension was DWI-related.17State of Texas.
