Sarpy County Driver’s License: Requirements, Renewal, and REAL ID

If you live in Sarpy County, your Nebraska driver’s license is issued through the state DMV office in Bellevue, not the county treasurer. A standard five-year Class O license costs $29, and you’ll need to show proof of identity, your Social Security number, and two documents proving your residential address. Most adult renewals can be done online for two cycles in a row before you have to come in for a new photo.

Documents You Need to Bring

Nebraska requires three categories of proof. If any one of them is missing, the examiner will send you home.

Proof of identity. Bring one document showing your full legal name and date of birth: a certified copy of your birth certificate, a valid U.S. passport, a Certificate of Naturalization, or a Permanent Resident Card.4Nebraska Legislature. Nebraska Code 60-484.04 – Identity Documents Photocopies are not accepted. If your name differs from the one on your identity document, bring certified copies of every document that links the names together, such as a marriage certificate or court order.5Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles. Social Security number. You must disclose your SSN so the DMV can verify it with the Social Security Administration.6Nebraska Legislature. Nebraska Code 60-484 – Operator’s License Required, When; Application It won’t appear on the license.

Two proofs of Sarpy County address. They must come from two separate sources and show your name and current residential street address. A P.O. Box doesn’t count. Recent bank statements, utility bills, mortgage documents, or any correspondence dated within the last 90 days all work.7Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles. Document Verification Form

Fill out the Class O Data Form before your visit; it asks for height, weight, eye color, and other descriptors. Download it from the DMV website or pick one up at the office.8Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles. Renewals – Driver’s License, Motorcycle and State ID

Tests, Vision, and Fees

First-time applicants take a written knowledge exam on traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving. A free online practice test is available through the DMV. For the road test, you have to bring a vehicle in safe working condition; the examiner checks turn signals, brake lights, mirrors, horn, and seat belts before leaving the lot. A pre-drive failure means a rescheduled test.

Every applicant goes through a vision screening. Glasses, contacts, and bioptic or telescopic lenses all count toward the standard.9Nebraska Legislature. Nebraska Code 60-4,118 – Vision Requirements If you don’t pass, the examiner hands you a Statement of Vision form to take to an optometrist or ophthalmologist; their exam can substitute for the DMV’s screening.

A standard five-year Class O license costs $29, which is a $24 license fee plus a $5 security surcharge.2Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles. Driver’s License (Class O) Replacing a lost or stolen license costs $16. Shorter-duration licenses carry lower fees and typically apply to non-citizens whose work authorization expires before the five-year mark.

After you pass and pay, the examiner takes your photo and digital signature. You’ll leave with a paper receipt that works as a temporary license for up to 30 days.10Nebraska Legislature. Nebraska Code 60-4,113 – Examining Personnel; Duties; Issuance of Receipt Your permanent plastic card is produced at a central facility and mailed to the address you gave. Watch for it so you have it before the receipt expires.

Renewing Your License

Nebraska Class O licenses are good for five years. You can renew online for two consecutive cycles, as long as your license expires before your 72nd birthday.8Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles. Renewals – Driver’s License, Motorcycle and State ID After two online renewals in a row, the next one has to be in person so the DMV can take a new photo and run a new vision screening.

Drivers 72 and older must renew in person every time. CDL holders can only renew online every other cycle. For in-person visits, filling out the Class O Data Form in advance will move things along.

REAL ID and the Gold Star

Since May 7, 2025, you need a REAL ID-compliant license or another acceptable federal ID to board domestic flights and enter certain federal facilities.11Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID Nebraska’s compliant license has a gold star, or a star outlined in gold, on the upper portion of the card.5Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles. New Nebraska Resident Driver’s Licensing A valid U.S. passport or passport card also works at TSA checkpoints, so you don’t need both.

If you have a Nebraska license without the gold star, you can upgrade at any driver licensing office by bringing the same identity, SSN, and address documents listed above and paying the replacement fee. If you reach airport security without a compliant ID, TSA’s ConfirmID process lets you attempt verification for a $45 fee, but approval isn’t guaranteed.11Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID Children under 18 don’t need identification for domestic flights.

The permit is valid for six months and costs $8.12Nebraska Legislature. Nebraska Code 60-4,124 – LPE-Learner’s Permit; Issuance; Operation Restrictions13Nebraska Legislature.
