SC DMV renewal fees start at $40 for a two-year passenger vehicle registration and $25 for an eight-year driver’s license. Those are the base numbers most drivers pay, but the total at the counter depends on your vehicle type, your fuel source, whether county property taxes are current, and whether you’re renewing on time.

Late Registration Penalties
Miss your registration renewal date and the SCDMV adds a delinquency penalty that grows the longer you wait:
- Less than 15 days late: $10
- 15 to 29 days late: $25
- 30 to 89 days late: $50
- 90 or more days late: $75

South Carolina Code Title 56 Chapter 3 – Section 56-3-2520 That is on top of anything the SCDMV charges to process a late renewal.
The Property Tax Prerequisite
Before the SCDMV will process a vehicle registration renewal, your county property taxes on the vehicle have to be paid. Property taxes are paid at the county treasurer’s office, not at the DMV, and the SCDMV cannot issue a new decal or registration card until the county reports the taxes paid in full.4South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. Renew My Registration The amount varies by county and by vehicle, so it is not a fixed line item, but it is part of what you will spend to keep your registration current. Plan for it before you calculate your renewal budget on the state fees alone.
Insurance is the other requirement built into the renewal. South Carolina requires liability coverage on every registered vehicle, and the SCDMV verifies it as part of the process.4South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. Renew My Registration It does not add to the SCDMV bill, but a lapse will block the renewal.
